SOCAS High School Hero Jessica Ahlquist Threatened and Harassed by Christians
Activism is important. American Atheists encourages everyone to become an activist and do something about those who would destroy the wall of separation between church and state and do whatever they can to impose theocracy upon all of us (religious and non-religious). Activism can be rewarding and you are serving to uphold the Constitution and the idea of enlightenment set forth by our Founding Fathers.
However, being an activist does not come without its risks. Just ask Jessica Alhquist from Rhode Island. Jessica sued her high school to have a prayer banner removed from the walls. A few days ago the courts agreed with Jessica and ordered the banner removed immediately.
Obviously proponents of the separation of church and state (religious and non-religious) see Jessica as a hero who did what needed to be done to ensure that the Constitution was upheld and that religious beliefs were not imposed by the government upon any students at her school.
Unfortunately, the theocrats see things differently and have reacted with hatred, harassment and threats. Jessica’s Twitter account was lambasted with threatening and hateful tweets. American Atheists was notified and we put out a call for help on our Facebook page that resulted in tweets of support greatly outnumbering the hateful and threatening tweets. We want to thank everyone that used the hash tag #ThankYouJessica yesterday and supporting an amazing high school activist.
Supporters captured screen shots of the threats and hateful tweets to Jessica. American Atheist members Robert & Mary Posey captured a lot of them and included them on their blog JesusFetusFajitaFishsticks.
Zachary Bos, Massachusetts State Director for American Atheists, contacted the principal of the school where the banner is and where Jessica is now going to school as well as the local police. Steve Alhquist, Jessica’s father, let Zachary know that the members of the school board are taking these threats very seriously and that the Cranston Police are investigating every threat against Jessica.
Do not let them get you down Jessica! You are right and they are wrong. They are proving to everyone why religious beliefs are dangerous. Even the most “innocent” religious person can become motivated to violence when they feel that their beliefs are threatened. Keep your chin up and hold your head high because you did the right thing and defended the Constitution and protected all the students: even the ones who are ignorantly attacking you.
We are including some examples from the Posey’s Web Page below. It should be noted that many of these tweets came from minors. JesusFetusFajitaFishsticks elected to not hide the names of those who were brave enough to make threats in public and we agree completely with that policy. If you are brave enough to make a threat in public then you are brave enough to have your name associated with it and to accept the consequences of doing so. The Cranston Police are aware of all of these threats.

The dimwits of Rhode Island have handed the American Atheists a wonderful tool, and you should use it. You should trumpet "This is the voice of Christianity in Rhode Island" with a sheet of selected quotes -- black out the obscenities -- and make it available everywhere. The storm of ignorant vitriol unleashed on a fellow student simply destroys the notion that Christian education improves character or morals. THIS (you can say) THIS is the language, these are the brutal attitudes, that are inculcated by Christian parents and a Christian education. THESE are the morals your Christian education produced.
You must use this; it is wonderful teaching tool.
Yes, they are dimwits. But check it out. There are good Christians, and bad Christians, and every Christian has to go through sin. It's literally impossible not to. But don't just look at bad Christians to perceive Christianity. Look at in a whole, yes, in both good and bad. These dimwits are really stupid, I have to say, but think about this. Is it the Christian mind that is doing this, or the sinful mind?
I am telephoning State Representative Palumbo demanding he apologize to Jessica & to all Atheists as he is the evil criminal theocrat who would force religion on us all instead of keeping faith a private option. 401-785-2882 I am told is his number. Good job Jessica for removing establishments of religion off your public school walls & guaranteeing equal protection of law & standing up for Article 6 as "no religious test shall ever be required for any office or public trust under these United States." What part of " N O " does not Palumbo understand? It means zero nada zip zilch bible breath Palumbo. 843-926-1750 Dial An Atheist Larry Carter Center
"By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?" Matthew 7:16
If this is the type of fruit the church bears, then they need to change the types of seeds they're planting.
Whatever happened to hate the sin, love the sinner? Oh wait ... there was no sin. I'm not aware of anywhere in the bible that says "though shalt not take down banners. So, what happened to love your enemies? Matt 5:44 and Luke 6:27.
Isn't google great? It lets an atheist like myself become an apparent bible expert and throw the words of my own enemies back at them.
My friend, my friends why do you use such noble words against us, when it has absolutely no meaning at all. Did you not ever look into the bible and read it thourughly and faithfully (I'm not trying to convince you to become Christian). Why do you use words that have many meanings behind them? Just look at it this way. It's like me saying I know everything about time and space, when I only looked at an article about it. Don't take the tiny part. Take the whole part.
akang, you really don't read your bible do you? Ezekiel 23:20 or 2 Kings 8:12 or Amos 1:11 or Hosea 13:16 or 2 Kings 15:16 for just a representative sample of a book ILLEGAL TO MAIL since President McKinley pardoned Charles Chilton Moore out of prison for the crime of mailing obscene bible verses. Only Atheists read the entire pornographic genocidal anti-woman anti-science King James Bible book. There can be no excuse for the hundreds of pages of murders, tortures & insanities of New & Old Testament "dash the little ones against the stones" or "keep the virgins alive for yourselves." Do you really think snakes talk? You must if you believe the infallible word of Jehovah. Do you really think a woman should have sex with a donkey that ejaculates more semen than a horse? You must if you think prophets prophesy is true. Give up akang. We are glad you wannabee nice but just don't follow your bible examples when unsure how to be nice.
shame, shame on christians,I personally don't have enough hate in my heart to become a christian but have more love in my heart than religious people and their gods and I am an antitheist, take that to the bank.
Wow, how "Christian" of them. I thought Christian was supposed to mean 'Christ like' I don't think someone who said was so for peace would react like that.
Now, just look at them. Do you think they are Christians? Well, if they believe in Jesus Christ yes, but in their hearts, they refuse to do good. They are simply, sinning. And every christian does that. It's impossible to not go through that process, so let it be that. Just look into the good side of Christianity once in a while, and maybe, just maybe, your heart can open up a little bit. Want to read a good passage? John 3:16. It doesn't talk about how God did terrible things, but instead how he loved us.
We American Atheists always have a problem with telling the difference between a pacific xian & a bellicose xian. No matter what time of year, xmas, ishtar halloween, we can not be sure who is going to burn us in their hell while we are still alive while we do have some good news gospel that the post mortem hell threats are bogus. Akang, for every John 3:16, there is a Genesis 6:7 and on and on it goes. As much as you xtrians want to run and hide from yahweh; you are are shackled to his evil and wickedness. You can turn a blind eye all you want but the truth remains. You can run but you cannot hide, and as long as xtrians continue to excuse the wickedness and pure evil perpetrated by your god; your words ring hollow to many.
Each day more and more people are coming out of the atheist closet. So please continue to explain away the ridiculous and loathsome atrocities that continue to turn people towards reason and logic.
Since you gave me a quiz about the bible, I'd like to give you a very quick test to see just how well you understand and embrace Christianity. The test is a single question with a yes or no answer.
1. Since 1980 or the time you embraced Christianity, whichever is more recent, have you ever voted Republican?
Dear misathropicScott, IT is seems everything is a sin to the theist except breathing, they get mad when you don't think like them, they can have an opinion but you can't have one, is that fair.
Oh real tough. Personally, I find cyberbullying to be pathetic. Back in the day, when people had something to say to somebody, they say it to their face not make idle threats. Jessica has the courage to step up and demand that the banner be taken down because it was offensive to non-religious people and now she's being persecuted on the internet. The truth is that young girl is braver than any student in her school for standing up for her rights and standing against theistic dogma.
My daughter was not taunted by twitter in 1984 but her classmates' bigotry was in her face & religious terror begins with the hate believers feel having been forced to choose their heaven bribes over their hell threats of xian faiths Dial An Atheist in Des Moines Iowa back then received dozens of death threats amongst 18 thousand phone calls in 31 months. Jessica has every right to leave that up. I'm a proud atheist and I'm not afraid to show it. I've been discriminated against ever since i was in middle school. Grow up everybody.
Remember, they might hate you, but some of us actually care for you. Take me. Instead of bickering how stupid Atheism is, I'm just kind to the people. I talk with them, I understand them. I don't force Bible passages down their throats. I just think that I need to give out love, because I was given love from God, because God was so loving of all his people, even atheists, that he sent his one and only son to die for all our sins, present and futures, and that when we go to heaven, we will not be measured by our good deeds, but our belief that Jesus Christ for his sins. Think about it. Even though God didn't stop wars or diseases (that's all you guys talk about, looking at the bad side of God), he sacrificed his son, for all of us, even if we are sinners deep down, showing his immense love for us. And with this love I was given, I want to love others, even Atheists.
Akang, apparently you have not read your bible except for those verses which make you all warm and fuzzy inside. Try Genesis 6:7 to begin with, then read the Torah and come back and tell us how loving God is to all of his people. I do not suspect we will hear from you again though.
Have a nice, deluded and blissful life.
Call my life blissful and deluded. But honestly, you guys haven't read the bible, and you claim that I only read warm fuzzy passages. From my understanding, Atheists has not read even a single bible, yet open up the actual book, and yet they claim all the NEGATIVE things about Christianity. Look, all you guys criticize are the negative sides of Chrisitanity, and refuse to look into the good side. Your just being sterotypical, dogmatic. I reccomend you open your heart up just a little, and see what the goods people can do. Again, I am not trying to convert you, but I am trying to prove a point.
I've read the first five books of the bible in their entirety. I assure you that if you do not think that the bible is full of violence, genocide, and cruelty, you have not opened the bible to page 1. Start with the old testament.
If you want to see what the bible looks like when cherry picked for the violence instead of the peaceful stuff you've cherry picked from it, check out an old post of mine entitled, "Thou Shalt Kill." If that doesn't convince you that the bible mandates killing and violence, then you are truly deluding yourself.
http://misanthropicscott.wordpress.com/2007/10/19/thou-shalt-kill/
Of course, some good has been done in the name of religion. However, the net effect of religion when you weigh the positive and negative has been horrifically deleterious to humanity, as evidenced by the large number of deleted humans.
So, if you prefer to remain deluded, that's fine. Just don't come to atheist sites claiming that the bible is peaceful. It isn't.
At best the bible is ambiguous about violence. At worst, it mandates it. Clinic bombings, doctor shootings, and anti-gay violence are all recent and direct results of Christianity. If you add the other sects of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion (deliberately singular), the picture only gets worse.
Akang, how do you rebuke those of us who have read the entire bible and still feel it is the most despicable thing ever written? I spent several yrs reading, studying and discussing this piece of garbage with a protestant evangelical bible study group trying to spread the good news to me and convert me to their cult. Nevermind that I was a catholic and had been exposed to all of this nonsense since I was a child. My brand of christianity was not proper for them.
I thank them for this however, because that was the first time in my life that I actually read the bible, delved into the stories told as a kid and marveled at the fact that I ever for a minute; believed a single, evil word of this myth. The truth indeed will set you free, and reading, discussing and learning how ridiculous the myths of the bible are once studied at the age of reason had set me free from hatred, bigotry and evil.
Give it a try sometime akang. We are here with open arms!
akang,
There are false premises in the whole God sacrificing His only son for us and our sins.
First, let's start with the whole scapegoat concept on which it's based. How does sacrificing the life of another cleanse one of their sins? The whole thing is based on the old testament's penchant for killing animals. How does adding the sin of killing an innocent animal for no good reason (not even food) absolve anyone of anything? Similarly, how does the death of your God's son absolve me of anything? If I have sinned, do I not need to seek forgiveness from those whom I have harmed with my sin?
Second, I'm confused. Christianity claims to be monotheism. The holy trinity is somehow like a shamrock or The Three Faces of Eve or some such. God and Jesus and the Holy Ghost are really just one individual God, right? So, here's the problem. Jesus is God; God is immortal. No one was sacrificed for anyone. What did I miss? Is Jesus dead? Then why pray to him?
Third, you start from the premise that you know the definition of sin. Those of us who do not accept any god(s) hypotheses also do not accept your definition of sin.
So, please, if I have sinned against you, let me know in what way I have harmed you so that I may attempt to make restitution.
If not, then why call me a sinner? You did. Really. Reread your post. You included me as a sinner. You may be right. But, you don't know that unless I have harmed you personally or you have direct knowledge of some harm I have caused another.
You claim to love and understand atheists. But, you miss this basic premise. You are calling us sinners. We do not accept the premise of original sin. We do not accept that your bible determines the nature of sin.
In my mind, the only sin lies in deliberately and unnecessarily harming or trying to harm others. Or perhaps one could sin through recklessness that has a high probability of harming others. Certainly being born cannot be a sin as no one asks to be born. So, if you would include me in your list of sinners, please tell me of the harm I have caused.
Otherwise, you are not being loving but insulting, with the best of intentions, of course.
Look, what really confuses me about Atheists is that they Christian terms against us they don't even know. I think it will be best for you actually have in-depth anylsis about it.
Now let me clarify your points. Remember, it was the old testament they killed animals. Once Jesus Christ died for us, no more animals killed, so that's long gone. And I'm not saying redemption is the only way. What I want to say is LOVE. LOVE. Just think about it. A great being, more worthy than you people, loved you people, yes, even non-believers, that he sent his one and only son to dire for you. That is the greatest love. My point I'm trying to bring home is that God sacrificed his son out of love for us. And yet, some refuse to acknowledge that, only pointing out the negative things. Yes, you must seek forgiveness from both the people and Jesus Christ. It's not one sided you know.
Second point. Do you know what the Holy Trinity is? No? BECAUSE you refuse to even know what it is about. The Holy Trinity consists of three parts: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. God the Father is in the one in the heavens. God the Son is the one who came down as 100% man and 100% god. The Holy Spirit resides in every person, regardless of religious affiliation. (The Holy Spirit came into being after Jesus Christ died, and the Holy Spirit is the fuel for faith in God). The father, son, and spirit are not the equivalent of each other, but they are all one being God. To further clarify, God has three roles, or is the three same people. Remember, Jesus is 100% god, and 100% MAN. He is therefore mortal, and able to be killed. When Jesus was crucified on the cross, he was brought to a tomb. There the Roman Soldiers drew a donkey-man being crucified on the cross on the tomb, symbolizing how stupid Jesus was to them. Even more, there has been reports that large shaking has happened around the tomb. Jesus is not dead. His remains are not present, but instead, Jesus went back to heaven and sits on the right hand of God, the father almighty. And you do not pray to Jesus, you pray to God. Need more proof that Jesus existed? Remember, Jesus appeared to all his disciples at the same time. If you want to call it a mirage, that is absurd because 12 people cannot see the same mirage at the same time.
Third of all. I'm pretty chill with that. My point here was to clarify, not criticize.
Overall, you did not sin against me. I feel like I connected with you more, and I am actually glad that you got to refute my points. It is very nice talking to people other than Chrisitians. It allows me to be more open rather than in a closed shell. Yes, everyone is a sinner. Because we did a sin in the past, small or big. Even Christians are sinners. I am pretty chill with you not accepting. But I have to ask, if the bible does not determine sin, what does. And I do love atheists, but check this out, I'm not bickering at you atheists as sinners or satanists. What I am saying is the EVERYONE SINS, or in simpler terms EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES. Even I do. And honestly, I am really happy for you to share your definition of sin. I am not saying that being born is a sin. What I said was that it is human nature that everyone sins.
No no. You didn't cause harm. It's just I came to respect your ideas and our concept of sin is different from others. And last but not least, if I was insulting the Atheist ideas, why would I even bother waltzing into a Atheist website? Why would I want to be the only black sheep? Because I want the people, the world to know, that God loves you, even if you're a rapist, robber, cheater, and especially an Atheist. <3
akang,
First, you said, "Jesus is not dead." Therefore, to say that Jesus died for our sins is a lie.
And, you confirmed exactly what I said about the trinity. So, I did understand the term.
Second, that the lamb of god died for our sins is a direct and obvious continuation of a train of thought that started with the old testament's sacrifices of scapegoats. It is true that Christians do not sacrifice animals anymore because Jesus was the last lamb to be sacrificed. But, the idea that sacrifice of another can absolve one of their sins is an old testament concept. And, it is inherently flawed. There is simply no logic by which the death of one can absolve another. It made no sense in the old testament; it makes no sense in the new. It is a logical fallacy.
Third, it is not true that everyone sins. That is only a true statement by Christian standards because of original sin. For those of us who do not believe it to be a sin to be born, it is very possible that someone has done no deliberate harm to anyone else and is therefore not a sinner. Not all mistakes are sins.
You still include me in your list of sinners. I still find that insulting.
I respect that you come to an atheist site for a relatively respectful discourse. However, the fact that you are here does not mean that is why you came. It is simply true in your case. The number of Christians trolling atheist sites with no respect at all and just vitriol, hellfire, and damnation is a very large number.
Thank you for not being in that group. But, if you want to be truly respectful, you must first stop calling me a sinner.
Further, I'd rather you didn't try to tell me that God loves me. From what I have seen in my life, there are no gods. Further, wherever God's minions are and wherever they turn their attention, there is trouble.
I do, however, find it amusing that you note that God especially loves atheists. It echoes a rather humorous atheist comic.

“Remember, it was the old testament they killed animals. Once Jesus Christ died for us, no more animals killed, so that’s long gone.”
So, your perfect and inerrant God devised a plan to blood sacrifice animals for his appeasement that apparently satisfied him for over 4,000 years and then one day, a light bulb goes off in his head and he says: “I have it, no more killing of animals!”? “All of this blood is making me squeamish; I need to end this for Christ’s sake.”
“A great being, more worthy than you people, loved you people, yes, even non-believers, that he sent his one and only son to dire for you.”
More worthy than you people? Yes master. Thank you, master. We are honored master that you would even consider speaking to us people master.
“My point I’m trying to bring home is that God sacrificed his son out of love for us. And yet, some refuse to acknowledge that, only pointing out the negative things.”
So your all powerful god out of love for us, creates a son to atone for all of our sins? Let me ask this: since the advent of Jesus, how is the world any different from the time before he was created? What has the anointed one brought us that we as humans did not have prior?
Did the son cure disease maybe, eradicate hunger maybe, eliminate poverty maybe, denounce slavery maybe, remove suffering maybe or destroy evil maybe? Let me help you here, the answer you are searching for is NO, NO, NO, NO, NO and NO!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh but you say, he will not do any of this until his second coming. Newsflash chief, the son announced in your inerrant bible that he was coming to do all of this a looooonnnng time ago. Some prophet huh?
“The Holy Spirit resides in every person, regardless of religious affiliation.”
Looking, looking… No not in here. Damn, I got shortchanged again by the almighty one.
“Jesus was crucified on the cross, he was brought to a tomb. There the Roman Soldiers drew a donkey-man being crucified on the cross on the tomb, symbolizing how stupid Jesus was to them.”
Please be so kind as to inform us where this tomb is would ya? The hundreds of archaeologists searching for this tomb sure could use your help.
“And you do not pray to Jesus, you pray to God.”
You sure about that chief? So the all of those televangelists we see praying to jay-sus are doing it wrong? Wow, someone should tell them. Can you take care of that for us?
“Remember, Jesus appeared to all his disciples at the same time. If you want to call it a mirage, that is absurd because 12 people cannot see the same mirage at the same time.”
Really, where did you learn that one chief? Was it from the 12 gospels of the disciples that are in your bible? Ooh, that is right, I do remember now; there are not 12 gospels from the disciples; only 4. And of those 4 only 2 are ascribed to a disciple. Ooh, and those 2 ascribed to the disciples have been determined by bible scholars to be written by others (says so right in the bible). Ouch, I am so sorry akang. That has to sting a little. Please try again.
“It is very nice talking to people other than Chrisitians. It allows me to be more open rather than in a closed shell”
Thanks again akang for coming down to talk to the people. I am happy you are able to get out of your closed shell and be more open with us heathens. That is comforting and reassuring to us people. (Note to self, ease up on the sarcasm.)
“Because I want the people, the world to know, that God loves you, even if you’re a rapist, robber, cheater, and especially an Atheist. <3”
‘God loves you, even if you’re a rapist, robber, cheater, and especially an Atheist.’ And God also loves you if you are a murderer, adulterer, pedophile and an abuser according to christianity.
But you must never, under any circumstance; not believe in jesus. For if you do; God will damn you to hell for ETERNITY.
Everything else is as you say “chill” with god. You are priceless akang. Thanks for sharing.
Gn:6:7
In addition, you read the first five books. What happened to the others? Too tedious and stubborn headed to look into deep thought, or discuss it with Christians. The Bible is both literal and spiritual, and to understand the spiritual way is to have faith in Christ. And yes, I do believe that cruelty and bloodshed is in there, but what about the things God did do later? Take the book of Jonah. God commanded Jonah to prophesize to a city filled with animosity towards God that the city will be destroyed. Yet, after Jonah was done, God spared the city, because he was not nice, but caring. Here's what I see in every atheists. Let me emphasize this. ATHEISTS ONLY FIND THE NEGATIVE SIDES OF CHRISTIANITY. WHEN THEY FIND A GOOD SIDE, THEY IGNORE IT. Honestly, just be prepared with your information. I like the fact that you tried, and I am not saying you are stupid, but why use information you don't even know. It's like me saying the Theory of Relativity is false, even if I don't even know what it is about.
I stopped reading the bible because I no longer found it amusing and decided to spend my time reading more important things that actually have relevance in the world.
I do indeed recognize that there is good in the bible.
I mostly concentrate on the bad precisely because it gets largely ignored. If you want to see where I have concentrated on the good in the bible, check out this other old post of mine.
http://misanthropicscott.wordpress.com/2008/03/23/how-would-jesus-vote/
That should show you that I have some understanding of the new testament and how poorly most of Christ's minions follow his teachings.
And, there is a big difference between the bible and the Theory of Relativity. The bible makes no testable predictions. The bible has not one shred of evidence to support it.
Relativity, on the other hand, is one of our most tried and proven scientific theories. It predicted, among other things, stellar parallax (that light would bend around massive objects), that time would move more slowly in a moving vehicle like the space station, that gravitational frame dragging would occur (a test we have only recently had the precision instruments to confirm), and many other phenomena. That your GPS works is evidence of relativity since it takes the difference in the rate of the clocks in the satellites into account.
In short, General Relativity is falsifiable.
This means that it makes predictions which, if false, mean that the theory is false. The bible makes no such predictions. If you really wish to see the difference, simply tell me exactly what prediction the bible makes that, if false, would convince you that the bible is false.
Evolution makes falsifiable predictions.
Quantum Theory makes falsifiable predictions.
The bible makes none.
This is an important point. It should keep you from making future analogies between science and religion.
Akang; I must say you're a bit of comic relief.
In your statement to Mr. MisanthropicScott questioning his reading the other books, you then resort to name calling? Really?
Nice to see the real conjured face of you again old deceitful one.

Akang, why have faith in Christ but not Horus, Mithra, Dionysus, Osiris or Attis? All of these "godmen'" came long before Jesus and did the exact same things as Jesus allegedly did. They were all born of a virgin mother, all born on the winter solstice, all perfomed miracles, all said to be be the son of man, all were blood sacrificed, all "died" and arose on the 3rd day to reside in heaven.
In short, Jesus is the reincarnated godman which has been around for thousands of years. Nothing original, supernatural, or special about this regurgitated story.
Just be honest with yourself and admit that you believe this version because it is what you were taught as a child. And if you were indoctrinated as a child with Judaism, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witness, Bhuddism, Taoism or Islam, then you would be an ardent supporter of the respective religion you grew up with. Religion is truly arbitrary.

"Akang, why have faith in Christ but not Horus, Mithra, Dionysus, Osiris or Attis? All of these “godmen’” came long before Jesus and did the exact same things as Jesus allegedly did. These are commonly proposed parallels that are unfortunately exaggerations. While it's true that if you took the stories of all 5 Gods you mentioned and compared them against Jesus' story they would meet all the criteria you listed, individually the stories of the 5 Gods don't. For example, while Dionysus was the Son of a God, performed miracles, and died, he was not virgin born nor was he sacrificed. He was conceived by Zeus and ripped apart by Titans. Many similar proposed parallels have been exposed as exaggerations by both secular scholars and Christian apologists in the past.
While it's true that many of the myths about Jesus are regurgitated, unoriginal, and revamped stories, Jesus' story takes elements from many different stories and not just 2 or 3 in particular. I used to make the mistake of citing exaggerated parallels as well which can be detrimental to one's argument when exposed as exaggerations. In the future, be sure to mention that different elements of Jesus' tale are taken from several different stories and not all collectively from one or the person your arguing against could expose the exaggerations and hold that point against you.
These christian responses are not surprising at all. When one falls into the delusion that a fictional character can pay for all of their sins no matter how eggregious by merely just believing blindly in this ridiculous blood atonement; then what is the harm in making threats to a young woman who has the temerity to dare say this is bogus and rubbish and ask that the law be upheld to protect her freedoms? The christian's still believe they are going to heaven no matter how they treat others as jesus has paid for it. So there is no real accountability for a christian's action.
You bet the christian's will defend their jesus and religion as it is their "get out of jail free card". No real committment to making this world better for all, only committment is to keep their irrational belief safeguarded for their mental well being until they die. This is the mission, the beacon and the guiding light of christians; to keep the dream of an eternal, ignorant blissful life alive so they can face their mortality. Never a better case of the end justifying the means.
Very articulate, Buckeye.... this is the entire problem with talking sense with a christian, or believers of most faiths. They simply don't WANT to have their beliefs shattered, as it will force them to face the reality of mortality. And, come on, not being held accountable for your actions is a pretty sweet gig...!!
The early Hebrews tied their own righteous behavior to bringing favors from their God their way. Early Christians separated the two concepts with the arguments over salvation by faith alone, faith and good works, good works alone. One wise Christian woman commented that many Christians see becoming a Christian as a "get out of jail free card". They can lie, cheat, steal, bully, profiteer, all is forgiven if they accept Jesus as their saviour. One man even commented to me that he didn't have to be good because he has been saved. Bullying in public schools is a major problem and seems to be getting worse. Is it any wonder? I have angered many fundamentalist Christians by stating it isn't what religion you follow or whether you follow any ALL that matters are your day to day actions, how you treat your fellow man especially those that are different from you whether from race, ethnicity, gender, gender identification, sexual preference, country of origin, religion or lack thereof. When you find Christian or other religious bullies try pushing this message and see what replys you get!
Oh and if they challenge you just remind them of Matthew 25:31, sometimes called the judgment of the gentiles where men are judged not by their beliefs, or whether they were baptised, or belonged to the right church but by their day to day actions towards their fellow man: "the least you did to one of these who is my brother you did unto me." Turn the tables and use the Bible to support respect and tolerance and fair treatment for all.
Miss Tayler Crocker (adorable kid, see last comment) has quite the faith-based understanding of Yahweh's icky little sexual sadism (apparently, she DOES read her Bible) but I'm afraid the poor child needs to be pushed towards higher ordered thinking. If this little darling were one of my students, I'd pull out the Student Code of Conduct (every school district has one, you sign it at the beginning of the school year and forget about it not realizing that the teacher keeps a copy---ha!), have her practice using the table of contents, have her practice reading text elements and features, have her find the section on "cyber-bullying", read the section 5 times out loud, set a timer for 20 minutes and have her read in silence, ask her to evaluate her statement, "gods-going-to-fu)k-your-a$$-with-that-banner-scumbag" in light of her newly acquired knowledge (she's growing dendrites, folks) and then write an essay demonstrating 10 ways in which her statement violates the Student Code of Conduct. Hell, you could have her compare/contrast the Student Code of Conduct with Deuteronomy but I'm afraid you'd get in trouble because Miss Crocker would quickly find out which of the two texts codifies antisocial behavior. This is what happens when they take away your shiny red paddle and when administrators refuse to suspend...You're left with one option: Make. Them. Think. Peace, :-)
latinatheistgal,
It's been several decades since my last year of public school. Do kids really have to sign a code of conduct now? While I applaud the sentiment, I must ask:
1) How can this be legally binding since the signatories are minors?
2) How can this be legal since there is a legal requirement for kids below some age to attend school?
3) Can a minor get out of school legally by simply refusing to sign?
4) Would forcing minors to sign a legal document in order to obey the law regarding school attendance be duress?
Sorry, I'm the son of a lawyer and have also taken some very basic law courses in high school and college. I can't help but think that any such document is either illegal, void, or unenforceable.
That said, cyber-bullying should simply be against the law, same as any other threats of violence and should result in the same legal punishment as any minor would face for making face to face threats of violence.
Any lawyers or paralegals out there care to make some more informed commentary on this tangential topic?
My apologies for the late response...EVERY school district has a code of conduct....It has to do w/ policies and procedures which secure a safe, equitable, learning environment for all learners. Without a code of conduct, you would have chaos in the school system...If or rather, when, legal problems arise, the code of conduct backs you up as a teacher, particularly when it comes to disciplining students...Not having a code of conduct is insane...It's kinda like running a library without policies and procedures for reconsideration of materials...When you get a book challenge, a "request for reconsideration of materials", without a policy, you are in deep trouble...Parents must sign the code of conduct,"Failure to sign and return this receipt does not take away the responsibility to abide by the
contents of the Student Code of Conduct." State law in Texas requires districts to have a code of conduct. It is particularly useful when it comes to special education & its accomodations...I would NEVER discipline a student w/out reference to the code of conduct..Here is a sample from the Austin Independent School District...It's a snoozer of a read, though:
http://archive.austinisd.org/academics/docs/Student_Conduct_Code_2011_20...
P.S./Very Tangential: Check out what the Code of Conduct says about the "moment of silence"...If you walk into the front office of the school where I teach, at 8:05 am, you will see the principal, vice principal, counselor, office staff and the kids who recite the Pledge over the PA system with bowed heads...The code of conduct states, "State law does not allow your child to be excused from participation in the required minute of silence or silent activity that follows." I have no idea what "silent-activity-that-follows" means but it made me chuckle...I never make my students observe a minute of silence...We go about our business after pledging "one nation under god" and "Texas is one state under god"...the state pledge was changed some years ago. I skip "under god" BOTH times and the kids notice but no one has said anything to me yet.
I'm quite sure I never ever saw any similar document growing up in New York State. I graduated from high school in 1981. Perhaps things are different now. That spot for student signature is totally unenforceable. Minors are not legally competent. Contracts and agreements with minors are all voidable, at the least, on the part of the minor.
And, I'm still left with the question of what would happen should a student or parent fail to sign.
Anyone forced into signing any form of any legal document is under duress. As such, the document is non-binding. Further, refusal to sign would still not negate the legal requirement for the child to go to school.
As for enforcing rules, schools have long been able to do so in absence of such a signed document. The rules are likely on file somewhere and can be referred to regardless of whether parent or child signs anything and regardless of whether any parent has ever viewed the document.
I think your state has at least one illegal or unenforceable law on its books. This is not surprising. Most states do.
Things have changed dramatically since 1981. The code of conduct reflects state and federal laws (IDEA is a big one, special education has changed everything). If a parent refuses to sign the code of conduct, the child is not denied access to an education but when Johnny violates it, the sanctions are applied whether the parent likes it or not (weapons, absences, dress code, bullying, searches, academic dishonesty, alcohol & drugs, etc.). Obviously, a minor cannot "legally sign" the document but parents and students must be made VERY aware of the rules and regulations and the code of conduct is a vehicle communicating these expectations. I would quit my job tomorrow if I did not have written and formally adopted statements outlining policies and procedures that safeguard the learning environment for all learners.
In Jessica's case, some of the little thugs were threatening to harass her at school. If this type of bullying were to occur on my watch, I would deal with it swiftly according to the code of conduct AND the discipline management program adopted by my district...This protects me from capricious administrators who sweep things under the rug...I can force their hand if I need to & I do use the code of conduct to make the kiddos think. Here's an interesting one...As I understand it, if you go on their property, you consent to searches:

Boy I'm glad not to be in public school today!! It was no fun in my day. I did not start to enjoy life until well into adulthood. It sounds dramatically worse today.
in the Tinker v Des Moines Independent School District US Sup Ct case "students do not check their First Amendment rights at the schoolhouse door..." Students sign tests & forms & documents weekly if not daily. In a Gideon case of DeSoto Iowa 4th graders were forced to sign their names into the obscene little xian bibles forced into the hands of each student "free of charge?" Federal law protects students in all 50 states from criminal theocrats. Jessica is a great leader by example & State Representative Palumbo must either apologize specifically to her & to all Atheists he made bigoted remarks as we are not "evil" we live in a nation under a godless US Constitution making zero mention of a single god word at all. We are E PLURIBUS UNUM our national motto for 178 years not the McCarthyistic lie of IN god WE TRUST forced illegally onto our currency 56 years ago & onto our coins 103 years ago by bigot Teddy Roosevelt who called our great American founder Thomas Paine a "filthy little Atheist." I'll be calling Palumbo each day until you take down your hateful words of faith against great citizen Jessica Alquist. 843-926-1750 if you do not have caller ID
I’d like to point out one other serious problem. When something like this happens whose voices are heard, those of the secularists and those of the religious fanatics. Where are the voices of the average Christians? Why aren’t they speaking up loudly and saying “I am a Christian and this behavior is against everything that I believe in”. Why aren’t they writing Letters to the School Board and to the Editors of their local papers condemning the words of these students? It needs to be condemned in the strongest terms by all Christian ministers from their pulpits and by Christian parents in discussions with their own children. Atrocities are committed time and time again because the mass in the middle of average folks look the other way, pretend it hasn’t or isn’t happening, pretend it is none of their business. Silence is as great a sin as the angry hateful words of the students.
When something like this happens many Christians feel that any condemnation of the behavior is a condemnation of ALL Christians and the religion itself. AND to be honest if you read some of the posts here many aren’t able to separate the two, they can’t condemn just the behavior without attacking the religion and ALL that practice that religion. BUT Christians need to step back and stop and think about why Christianity has come under attack, why do many have such a bad opinion of the religion? The voices of Christianity that are heard on the airwaves from coast to coast are the voices of Hannitty and Hagee, the voices of extremists, and fundamentalists. NOT the moderate voices of the mass of average folks in the middle.
Humphreys, Christians will not condemn genocide so why are on earth would one expect them to denounce these types of actions? Never going to happen.
Give them some credit. After all, the pope did apologize for Galileo ... in 1992 and for the holocaust ... in 1998. They'll get it eventually.
MisanthropicScott, xtrians have had 2,000 yrs to admonish the genocide committed by god and still nothing. I do not think the flock will see the light in my lifetime.
It may not matter anyhow considering they believe they are commissioned by the evil one to take dominion over the world including overpopulating the world, consuming every natural resource without a thought of conservation and finally preserving the so called "holy land" at all costs including WWIII to clear the way for the fictitious 2nd coming; which according to their inerrant bible and messiah should have happened about 2,000 yrs ago.
Gn 6:7
Um ... I was being sarcastic. Perhaps I should have used tags.
I couldn't agree with you more about overpopulation, the dominionists, the support of Israel at all costs, and the deliberately self-fulfilling prophesy of Armageddon.
I'm not sure which genocide you're talking about. There are many in the old testament. There is not much historical evidence for them, at least according to one show on the Herstory channel.
So, while the book certainly does speak of Yahweh mandated genocides making it seem acceptable, whether there were any actually committed at that time or whether the O.T. is a work of fiction on the subject is not clear to me.
I'm not a history buff, so feel free to correct me or to at least point out the 2K old genocide to which you refer.
Regarding Israel/Palestine, my understanding is that this is still somehow a dispute over the birthright of Abraham. As far as I can tell, the guy was a shepherd. I'll chip in to buy the Muslims a few hundred sheep and give them the birthright. Then, for the next 2K years, they get to be the first ones up against a wall every time the world goes through a difficult time.
That's the birthright of Abraham, no?
IMNSHO, Sarah was a major league bitch. First she wants her husband to sleep with the help so that his bloodline will continue. (To my knowledge, no one ever asked Hagar about this.)
Then, after the baby is born, Sarah has a child of her own and boots the Hagar and Ishmael out on their butts in the desert. Abraham being hugely pussy-whipped, lets her get away with this allowing her to boot his own son (never in dispute) into the desert.
If these two had been decent human beings, the three of them would have led a perfectly happy alternative lifestyle with their two sons living together in a loving household. I can't imagine why anyone still claims descent from this man. But, both sides do. ben Avraham and ibu Ibraham mean the same thing (son of Abraham) and are still common among both Jews and Muslims.
Has anyone ever been so undeserving of their fame and respect?
Has any birth right ever been less worth fighting over?
Misanthropic, no need for tags. I caught your sarcasm. It was my attempt( a poor one at that) at latching on to your jab at the pope taking thousands of yrs to finally recognize the mistakes of the catholic church on those issues you listed.
I guess it is too much to ask of the church to condemn the evil actions of their gravy train.
As for the genocide, I was referring to those listed and glorified in the OT. And 2,000 yrs is referencing the amount of time christianity has been around and consequently the amount of time they have had to recognize their inerrant bible as evil but have failed to do so.
To Mr. Scott :
I'm in agreement with you in saying that the Bible is nothing but a work of fiction, written by very dishonorable men, for nothing more than an excuse for richness & control over the gullible masses.
But, they tend to forget the notion not all people are that gullible.
However ; I think what point Mr. Nonbeliever was making is the fact that Christians always take the Bible as truth - at least when
it suits them - they always seem
to pick * cherish the light side of
the Bible, but will only offer
overlapping excuses for its dark
side.
That's why the Bible has been
going through a morphological
transition since its inception.
If you've ever took notice.
Hope you have.
Get an older family Bible &
compare it to today's Bible, &
you'll notice some tremendous
changes within.
The Christian excuses are always
the same, as they will say things
like :
"You're taking the Bible out of
context" or "they didn't interpret
the Scriptures correctly."
Well in ancient Rome I'm sure
they had " very good "
interpreters as they were dealing
with Israel on a day to day basis.
So they can spare me that load of
sheep shit.
Anyway, go for it Buckeye!
Mr. Scott, I love the website you
have & the postings here - might
I add - keep up the good work as both of you show great minds with no excuses.
Oh... & one more thing Mr. Scott.
Don't let their catchy little names like " sinner get to you ; I don't, as I'll just wear it as a badge of honor & move on.
They think they have all the answers that's why they never bother to ask questions, only coming too everyone as - know - it - all's - & yet, know nothing.
Troubling to be sure, but they'll get no cigar from me.
