Statement

This week’s resolution allows our organization to remain focused on the issues that matter most to our members and again dedicate all our attention and resources toward the critical issue of our time.

LGBTQ+ Americans, particularly transgender Americans, are among the groups most impacted by religiously-motivated stigma and anti-scientific misinformation.

No matter how many times Donald Trump or the extremists he’s aligned himself with repeat the lies they tell about religion in America, the facts are still the facts: the United States is and has always been a secular nation, founded not on the Bible but a deliberately secular Constitution that American Atheists will proudly and vigorously defend.

American Atheists will never waver from our mission—to protect civil rights, advance political equality, achieve social inclusion, and empower atheists and other nonreligious people—especially now.

“Given the repercussions for the millions of trans people in this country, in this one life we have to live, as an atheist and as a trans woman, I hope that Prof. Dawkins treats this issue with greater understanding and respect in the future.”

“Like the Church’s sex abuse problem, Bill Donohue may want to deny the existence of Christian nationalism and the Christian extremist storming of our Capitol on January 6. But that’s not how facts work.”

The incoming administration must take seriously its obligation to represent the interests of all Americans rather than entrenching a narrow vision of religious liberty.
