Cranford, NJ—On Wednesday, American Atheists officially condemned the amendment that was passed to include the word god into the 2012 Democratic National Platform. The measure, led by Former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, brought a vote before the convention delegates, requesting the official platform include the term god, and recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The motion was not unanimous and was protested by some delegates, but was adopted after three voice votes by the official delegates. Brian BarnardBrian Barnard, who championed American Atheists' fight in the Utah Highway Patrol Cross Case, has died peacefully in his Utah home. Barnard had been a leader in civil rights laws, working tirelessly to ensure that governments lived up to their responsibilities to protect and defend the constitution. As of Monday, August 13, 2012, the attorneys representing The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation (WTCMF) said in papers filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan that the 20-foot-tall beam will be displayed as a historical object because it tells part of the story of the rescue and recovery effort after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
