Religious Behavior Modification

Friday, September 30th, 2011

“Just as there is no such thing as Christian physics or Muslim Algebra, we will see that there is no such thing as Christian or Muslim morality.”  - Sam Harris

The subject of morality can be daunting for most of us. Whenever the topic comes up in a conversation with anyone who believes in a deity, I get that all-too-familiar tingling at the base of my neck that tells me this is going to be one of those conversations. This includes the mainstream, extremists and those wonderful people of faith I write about. Even trying to define morality without getting into the meat of the subject is enough to set some people off.  This is because morality is an extremely personal conviction, and for the believer, it is irrevocably tied to their god.  But what does it mean to be moral?

There are so many variables to consider. Cultural differences, religious belief, personal circumstances and several other aspects of our lives are invariably included in our synthesis of what is right and what is wrong.

Given enough time, each one of us can probably produce a very lengthily list of values that will seem true to some and false to another.  Which is right?  All of them?  None of them? A mishmash? Truth is, there is no universally correct system of morality that fits every single person, regardless of their individuality.

Basically, morality is simply a system how we treat each other.  That is pretty much where the commonalities end.  If we try to get more complex, we end up with a decidedly immoral form of morality which leads to condemnation and bold judgments. In its purest form, morality can be defined as an act or action that is the result of the decision-making process that reflects individual points of view.1 What I will be examining are the differences between the decision-making process between the indoctrinated and the atheist.

The indoctrinated believer forms their morality from the belief that their decision is in line with and acceptable to, or commanded by the deity they follow.  Thus, decisions based on religious doctrine are viewed by the indoctrinated as the absolute pinnacle of morality.

The atheist forms their morality based on what is best for their society, their empathy toward their fellow human, and their own enlightened self interest.

It is these two diametrically opposed aspects of what influences behavior that concern me as an atheist in a society  comprised of mostly Christians.  I have spent a considerable amount of time researching, observing and studying the behavior of those who base their morality on religious indoctrination. I have noticed very high instances of immorality stemming from their religious beliefs. In fact, the amount of people who hold bigoted and discriminatory points of view toward a variety of groups and individuals not conforming to their beliefs or who do not acknowledge the validity or existence of God is staggering. This includes rampant discrimination towards homosexuals and the general misogyny that exists within the fundamental Abrahamic religions.

What makes it all the more frustrating to those of us who have embraced reason is the willful ignorance toward the collective of human intelligence and empirical evidence that make up the scientific community. This ignorance plays a huge role in the divide between the general definition of morality and what the religionists conception of morality is. I say “conception” of morality because I find it difficult to bring myself to actually call it morality.  “Religious behavior modification” would be a closer definition.

Broken down, for what it is, morality can only be secular in nature. This is because morality necessitates a modification to individual behavior that results in a positive effect on society as a whole, embracing humanity and the acceptance of different lifestyles and cultures. Thus, this religious behavior modification cannot be defined as morality because of its pre-requisites. There exists little or no tolerance for cultures, lifestyles and orientations that fall outside of accepted teaching and doctrines. Religious behavior modification cannot be defined as morality because it utilizes the fear of punishment and hope for reward as the motivating factors in the decision-making process, not the well-being of society as a whole. It demands change on a supernatural level, and the glaring problem with this is that the supernatural aspects of one religion, sect or cult are often diametrically opposed to the supernatural aspects of other religions, sects or cults, and the very existence of the supernatural, in general, is completely disregarded by atheists.

U.S. Marine briefly arrested for not attending “all faiths” religious service

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The following is sent in by David Z. – A former Marine Corps NCO. My contributions are clearly marked.

Boot Camp’s “Optional” Religious Service

July, 7th 1998 I went to Marine Corps Basic Training in San Diego, CA.  Shortly after being assigned to Platoon 1103 and meeting our Drill Instructors, the first Sunday of my enlistment rolled around.  We sat in one of the theaters and listened to a Chaplain speak, telling us that they offered services for almost any form of religion and that after he was finished we were to get in line for our appropriate religion.  He also said that there was a non-denominational group that would discuss our relationship with god.  Lastly he said that we did not have to attend any church services if we did not want to.

I looked for the “not attending church” line, but could not find it.  I was instead ordered to line up in the non-denominational line.

I sounded off, “Sir, This Recruit requests permission to not attend church services, Sir!”

Another platoon’s Drill Instructor interrogated and berated me for quite some time as I continued to respond with that phrase. Finally he gave in and took me back to the barracks where my Drill Instructor did the same.  Eventually he too gave in and put me to work cleaning different areas of the barracks.

My Senior Drill Instructor (a church choir singer and devout christian) was then informed.  He attempted the interrogation and berating, having the same effect.  Later he had both a private and a public “Hats off” more polite conversation urging me to attend church services.  Again I sounded off with the phrase that became my mantra.  ”Sir, This Recruit requests permission to not attend church services, Sir!”  He then seemed to want nothing to do with me since I wouldn’t “Do this for him.”

At least he stopped trying to force me to go.

***Justin Griffith here – I simply have to reply to this before moving on. This same theme has been virtually universal across all services and all stories that I’ve heard from fellow atheists. It certainly happened to me too. There are two choices we can make when faced with this in boot camp.

1) Clean up and get yelled at every week – a punishment for not believing in god.  2) Go to a religious service and tune it out.

I tried both. I was not allowed to write letters, sleep, or even sit down. If for even one second I wasn’t actively cleaning, the Drill Sergeants would throw sand across the (freshly) waxed floor, or otherwise punish me. They get really creative. I was a special case because just before graduation, I was seriously injured. This extended my stay from the standard 9 weeks to a grueling 30-something weeks long.

Drill Instructor Father Guido SarducciI eventually chose to go to the religious service that was farthest away. There were two that I could take a bus across post, lengthening the total time away to 2-3 hours. The two choices were Mormon and Spanish Protestant. Many of the Mormons had bulging pockets with their garments (‘magic underwear’ in harsh terms).

I chose the Spanish one because it all seemed like gibberish anyway. It was funny actually, because I met a few others who were doing the exact same thing as me, and we all sat in the back. The entire service was in Spanish and none of us in the back row spoke the language.

We got to dance around to the peculiar Spanish church songs. We heard the excited and rapid-fire babbling in a foreign tongue. Every once in a while a very loud voice from across the room would say “Si, SENIOR!” And we would all laugh like a bastard, but quietly enough not to alert the people around us.

Okay, back to David Z.’s letter
***

ARRESTED for not going to “all-faiths” religious service.

After basic I had another run in.  I was in Marine Combat training (that is where they send the POGs before MOS school).

Some grunt corporal was in charge of us and ordered us to line up for an “all faiths” religious service.  I told the corporal that I would be unable to attend because the service could not possibly include my “faith.”

He then asked what my religion was.  To avoid outing myself, I said it was a secret. He and the other boots had a laugh as he said, “I thought the point of a religion was to try to convert everyone to it.”

I guess he didn’t pick up on the hints that I wasn’t a christian.

He ordered me to get in line again.  I disobeyed and went to sit on my pack until the service was over.  He came back very pissed. He arrested me (not that I think he had the authority to) for disobeying a direct order.  He even Mirandized me.

I saw him discussing this with some other Marines and eventually he came back and told me to return to my platoon.  I assume he was informed that his order was unlawful, and he could not take action against me for it.

***End of David’s Letter***

That’s pretty intense. (more…)

The Twisted Ideologies Of Radical Islam

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

We are at war against infidels…I ask all Islamic nations, all Muslims,  all Islamic armies, and all heads of Islamic states to join the Holy War. There are many enemies to be killed or destroyed…the final aim of which  is to put Koranic law in power from one end of the earth to the other - Ayatollah Khomeini

The very fact that radical Muslims issue death threats for cartooning Muhammed, as well as the likelihood that I will get yet another fatwa for my execution is revealing of just how twisted Radical Islam is. Death threats for speaking out against horrific crimes and demented ideologies, as well as the practice of brutally murdering innocent women for the utterly ridiculous “crime” of blasphemy is enough evidence of how psychotic radical Islam is. The sight of Muslim extremists wearing sandwich boards that suggest the beheading of anyone who states that Islam is not a religion of peace speaks for itself.

Islamic apologists are popping up all over the media from cable news to YouTube for the express purpose of explaining suicide-bombers who detonate their explosives in crowded marketplaces, as well as all the other innumerable horrific acts committed under the banner of Islam, as not being the “true spirit of Islam.” No, not all Muslims are terrorists who go to sleep at night and wake the next morning thinking of all the ways that they can rid the world of the infidel, but there are enough of them that it should cause us more concern than we are warranting because like all religions, Islam is a meme. It is a virus of the mind, a mental disease that is highly infectious and when you add ideologies that support acts of violence and doctrines that call for world domination, you end up with the physical manifestation of unconditional obedience to a twisted, barbaric philosophy that we know as terrorism.

In spite of what the Islamic apologists are spouting at every available opportunity, radical Islam is not interested in the premises of the freedoms that the United States were founded upon. A Muslim extremist does not and cannot believe in freedom of choice. They are unconditionally submissive to the will and decree of their god and their militant, radical doctrines demand that the world be converted, subjugated or annihilated.

Fear and intimidation can garner many things, but respect is not one of them. Respect is something to be earned through actions that are beneficial either to society as a whole, or to an individual or group of individuals. This is a concept that is lost on the Muslim extremist. Horrific violence is often the result when Muslim extremists believe that Islam has been disrespected, and in some cases, entire countries are living in fear behind dead-bolted tongues. Radical Islam does not deserve respect by virtue of the destruction and disaster that has been propagated. Their activities continue to be an international scourge on humanity.

The intentions of many individuals, the President of the United states included, who endeavor all of us to be respectful of Islam may come from the desire for humanity to live in harmony with each other. This may be a very high ideal, but the reality of the situation is that a relatively small subset of Islam seems to be controlling the strings of the world as if humanity were their own, personal marionettes. Our eyes are inundated every day with images of death, destruction and acts of terrorism committed by Muslim fanatics. No matter how loudly the apologists defend their faith, people are dying for the simple act of not being Muslim. Humanity as a whole should be ashamed for allowing the situation of fundamental Islamic terrorism to get to the state where we are so afraid of inciting horrific acts of violence that we are allowing them to slowly, methodically and systematically succeed in their effort to adhere literally to the commands of world domination, such as these:

  • Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war” – Koran:9:5
  • The Believers fight in Allah’s Cause, they slay and are slain, kill and are killed” - Koran:9:112
  • Fight those who do not believe until they all surrender, paying the protective tax in submission” – Koran:9:29
  • Fight them until all opposition ends and all submit to Allah” – Koran:8:39
  • So fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief [non-Muslims]) and all submit to the religion of Allah alone (in the whole world)” – Koran:8:39
  • Fight them and Allah will punish them by your hands, lay them low, and cover them with shame. He will help you over them” – Koran:9:14

Radical Islam is not merely an extreme version of Islam, but a cultural and social ideology that dominates all the aspects of the life of the Muslim extremist. It is a violent movement with a primary objective to dominate everything it can, and to suppress all other things in its path, including other beliefs, movements and ideologies. As I have already stated, Radical Islam is dedicated by any means possible to the domination of the world.

Just because all Muslims are not radical or politically motivated does not mean that the ones who are do not possess the capacity to put the whole world at risk by their interpretation of “jihad.“ By definition, jihad simply means “struggle,” but the radicals have embraced a defensive and retaliatory definition, particularly against Western cultures that they feel are anti-Islamic or waging a war against them. The more we tout ourselves as a Christian Nation, the more aggressively radical Muslim will lash out at us for the simple reason that their ideologies do not include anything even remotely similar to our First Amendment.  To them, the Bush Doctrine is a declaration of war against their god.

Now, before any of you blazing trolls out there who are looking for yet another opportunity to misquote me, I am not stating that the individuals and nations who are victims of terrorist attacks somehow deserve it.  However, we need to understand the radical Muslim’s mindset and how it perceives our occupation of their lands and act accordingly, with prudence and responsibility.

It all comes down to the fact that religions are what their adherents understand them to be, and that understanding has a lot to do with how religious leaders interpret their holy books.  The tenets of Radical Islam can best be revealed through their own Scripture:

Fa’idhā Laqītumu Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Fađarba Ar-Riqābi Ĥattaá ‘Idhā ‘Athkhantumūhum Fashuddū Al-Wathāqa Fa’immā Mannāan Ba`du Wa ‘Immā Fidā’an Ĥattaá Tađa`a Al-Ĥarbu ‘Awzārahā Dhālika Wa Law Yashā’u Allāhu Lāntaşara Minhum Wa Lakin Liyabluwa Ba`đakum Biba`đin Wa Al-Ladhīna Qutilū Fī Sabīli Allāhi Falan Yuđilla ‘A`mālahum – Surah 47:4

Translated:

Therefore, when you meet the unbelievers, smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah’s Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah, He will never let their deeds be lost – Surah 47:4

Christian Fundamentalists: Deeply Disturbed Psychotic Sociopaths

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

A Clarification…

A recent article I wrote called for the eradication of dangerous and disingenuous doctrines that the radical extremist fundamentalists use to justify acts of terrorism.  True to form, and largely due to a lack of basic reading comprehension, my words were turned and twisted and headlines appeared in thousands of newspapers and blogs stating that I was calling for the murder of Christians.  Of course, those who know me understand how utterly ridiculous this is, as I would have to start with my own wife and children.  As well, I have a very long history of condemning all forms of violence and any activism that is done outside the bounds of the law.  One of the biggest complaints I received was that I had no business “lumping” Christians in with Muslims. Outside of the sheer bigotry in that statement alone, let’s examine why fundamentalist Christians should be included in those who would and do commit acts of terrorism.

First, we should examine the difference between a fundamental Christian and a Christian fundamentalist.  Yes, there is a difference.  A fundamental Christian usually believes the bible to be the inerrant and literal word of their god.  However, most of them hold to the belief that their savior, the character portrayed as Jesus Christ in their bible, had come to give a new covenant to the faithful that centers around peace, love, charity and a lifestyle that does not include a variety of practices that they feel is not productive for their lives.  Most of them wouldn’t even think of committing an act of violence, let alone terrorism.  While strong in their beliefs, they are basically peaceful people and that the advent of Christ means that the laws, commands and examples that are part and parcel of their bible’s Old Testament are no longer needed.  These individuals represent the majority of the faith, to one degree or another.

A Christian fundamentalist is a whole other animal.  These people seem to ignore the teachings of Christ that have been put forth in Beatitudes, and somehow cannot comprehend 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 which states,

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

It is the Christian fundamentalists that bring shame to the faith, and it is the responsibility of mainstream Christianity to get on their proverbial mountaintops and shout out that these fundamentalists are not representative of their beliefs.  These particular individuals present a problem for the rest of society because they look upon the worst and vilest of Scriptures for the basis of their doctrines, and it is these doctrines that society must work toward eradicating.  It has been done before, and the fact that you don’t see mainstream Christianity calling for the murder of adulterers, homosexuals, witches and the like are proof positive that dangerous doctrines have been eradicated in the past.

The Christian fundamentalist operates on the fringes and would bring the world to an end just so there would be no infidels left. These people would do so not just to bring about their eschatological beliefs, but because they actually believe this is what their god commands them to do. They are not calling for the eradication of ideas, but of actual living, breathing people.  They choose violence as their venue and easily find justification for it through the Bible. Sometimes all it takes is a perceived insult to their god, the audacity of an attempt to convert someone to a different religion, or worse yet – to cause someone to lose their faith entirely. Even family members are not immune to the demands that death be the only punishment.

There is huge problem with believing that the Old Testament laws and commands in the Bible are to be obeyed in these modern times. In the Old Testament, Yahweh commands that entire nations be slaughtered for blasphemy, unbelief or worshiping “false gods,” and that as long as these people are obeying every jot and tittle, their god will fight right beside them. If you think that the concept of “jihad” is only a Muslim thing, then read the Old Testament, particularly the Pentateuch, and imagine what it would be like if all Christians participated.

One of the examples drawn from the Old Testament is the sawing of people in two, chopping them into pieces with an axe, decapitating them and then mounting the heads in a public square as a warning. Men are not the only victims portrayed, either. Women and children alike are buried alive and infants are not even spared. In some cases, fetuses are literally ripped from the wombs of living women. Nobody is safe, not the sick, the dying, the blind or the lame, pregnant mothers, nursing mothers, infants, toddlers or babies.

The Old Testament commands that allow these fundamentalists to vie for world domination are also very clear. It is rife with mandates from Yahweh that if there exists a city that is not under their control, then they are commanded to attack and either convert, subjugate or, if necessary, annihilate every resident, every animal and to utterly destroy the city. There are provisions in the Old Testament for leaving some of the infidels alive, such as women who are considered “spoils of war” and are to be kept for sexual purposes.

The Old Testament clarifies that all adulterers, witches, homosexuals, blasphemers and other “undesirables” are to be slaughtered, even if they profess to believe. The punishment is the same for many other transgressions, including most of the beloved Ten Commandments, as well as for having premarital sex, incest, seduction, being raped (yes, you read that correctly), ignoring a decision of a holy man, eating the wrong food on a religious holiday, reading unapproved material, being rebellious to your parents, being an outspoken women, being an improperly covered woman, marrying the wrong person and the list goes on and on. I, for one, am glad that the vast, vast majority of Christians no longer hold the beliefs that the fundamentalists do. Most of us, believer and atheist alike, would be forced to live underground and our world would be a very different place.

One of the problems that are inherent with the faith as whole is that instead of condemning acts of terrorism that are committed by professed Christians, such as the murder of physicians who provide abortion services, the destruction of property and the violence against certain individuals, mainstream believers often state that these mentally disturbed individuals are not “True Christians.”  This is, of course, incorrect.  Although these people operate on the fringes of reality, they still profess belief in the core doctrines of Christianity.  They believe in Christ as the risen savior, born of a virgin and use the very same Bible as even the most liberal Christian.  They claim to be Christian, and by virtue of the some forty thousand different denominations that exist in the world, reality demands it be a hard-pressed defense to say they are not “True Christians.”  If I were still a Christian, I’d be mad as hell and spend a good amount of my time telling everyone I come in contact with that these are not “false Christians,” but deeply disturbed, psychotic sociopaths.

I have maintained throughout my career as an activist that the concept of faith can, and often does, have a positive effect on an individual.  Religion, however, remains the problem because much of it is ambiguous, enigmatic and left too widely open for interpretations that adversely and detrimentally affect the lives of nearly everyone on the planet.  Faith my offer comfort, be a moral compass of sorts that direct a person toward acts of kindness and offer an individual a means of understanding that there does exist something larger than themselves.  Even an Atheist cannot deny that there is something larger than ourselves; except for us it is not in the form of gods, but the whole of humanity.  It is not faith that is the problem, but the poisonous concept of fundamentalist radical extremism.  Poisons are harmless when left on the top shelf, out of the reach of those who are not aware of its inherent dangers when used according to the instructions.  Religion is no different, and left in the wrong hands, unfettered and literally interpreted, it invariably ends up costing human lives.

Thus, I make no apologies for my words.  In the words of Dr. Richard Dawkins,

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully

Of course, I am fully expecting the same group who misquoted my last article to do so here.  Watch, you’ll be seeing headlines like, “Atheists Says All Christians Are Psychopathic Sociopaths.”  They can’t help it…

“Organised religion is violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism, tribalism, and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children.” ― Christopher Hitchens
