On Morals: Why Atheism Trumps Christianity

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Any religion that requires the acceptance of its ideas on faith alone is admitting that its doctrines cannot stand on their own merits nor withstand any critical examination. They require that their adherents accept as truth their authority, and Christianity is a perfect illustration of this point.  The belief in a god is irrational, as are those who accepts the belief in a god. Once this leap of faith is made, it only takes short steps to abandon the standards of rationality and lose the ability to distinguish truth from falsehoods. When one examines the doctrines of Christianity, it is revealed not to be the bastion of wonderful moral standards.  To the opposite, Christian morals are contrary to our well being and to our society.

The belief that there was a divine man who died for the sins of the world is a grievous and immoral notion. It amounts to human sacrifice.  If this were even suggested in real life, such as someone offering to become victim of capital punishment for another’s crime, there would be cries from from every corner of society denouncing this action. Given that, then by what possible stretch of the imagination does an immoral idea such as this suddenly become moral when it is the murder of the fictitious Jesus is a substitution for the “crime” of another person or persons?  Obviously, the answer is to instill guilty feelings. There can be no other logical purpose. When you look at the base doctrines of evangelism, it is very apparent that fear and guilt are the basic emotions that are used by Christianity to convert its targets. Those who eventually walk away from their faith were probably converted through fear alone, as a fearful person may eventually rebel.  However, those who become life long adherents were more than likely converted through both fear and guilt, because a person with deep feelings of guilt is not likely to rebel. The alleged “sacrifice” of Christ has served the church very well over the millennia.

The basic problem with Christian morality comes down to it being little more than a primitive system of reward and punishment. Be good, don’t ask questions and stay in line and you will be rewarded.  Be skeptical, ask questions and use your mind in a reasonable and rational manner and you are consigned to eternal punishment in the most horrible place, forever.  Although some churches have modified this and a few have even eliminated, this system has remained fundamental to Christianity throughout the history of the church. The whole idea of heaven and hell is a perfect illustration of just how the the core of Christianity is against reason, rationality and even life, itself.  The faith elevates ignorance and non-productivity and suppresses creative and innovative thought. One competent scientist is worth more than a thousand evangelists.

Christianity teaches its followers to meek and mild, to accept their lot in life.  This might seem like humility at its best, but consider the fate of a country that adopts this attitude and how easy it would be for any despot to seize and keep power. Does this not assure the perpetration of evil and is this doctrine not carte blanche for every injustice imaginable? It is no accident that the bible lacks any story, tale or parable about the oppressed rising up against their oppressors.  Hitler and many other dictators over the centuries all looked to the bible for justification of their actions.  And they have found it there.

There are many other problems with the alleged “divine ethics” of the Christian faith.  Slavery, which was widespread in biblical times and continues to be in many countries, is not only not admonished in the bible, but instructions on how to treat slaves is part of holy scripture.  As a general rule, women are treated as second class citizens because Christianity is a male-dominated social hierarchy. The Apostle Paul even tells women to never speak in church, along with a plethora of other misogynist requirements.

Christianity not only brings on feelings of guilt, but its promotion of death over life is morbid.  The fact that a cross, a symbol of suffering, torture and death is the icon of the faith illustrates that Christianity is a philosophy of death and has turned real human values into non-values.  Suffering has become noble and death has become eternal life.  Pictures and illustrations of blood gushing wounds on the fictitious Jesus abound almost everywhere and blood rituals such as communion are core practices in almost every church in the world.  The bloody image of a man on a cross desensitizes the faithful and causes them to believe that suffering and misery are expected and death is the only escape.  Christianity teaches that all people are evil and destined to a life of pain and suffering and hope only lies in the salvation of Christ and his assurance of a heavenly reward after we die and those who do not believe will be eternally punished. I find it hard to contemplate a more evil system.

The faith purports itself to be non-judgmental, as the notion of “judge not lest ye be judged” is often cited by Christians.  Literally, this means that only the Christian god can judge anyone’s actions to be immoral. This is one of the most damaging doctrines of the faith because it assures that the weak will be perpetually doomed to suffering under the strong. However, much like the ecological issue, the Bible makes up for this by assuring the weak that they will eventually inherit this new earth.  It is the pinnacle of ignorance not to judge people like Osama bin Laden and Adolf Hitler, but to just turn the other cheek, believing that in the next life everything will be sorted out.

Of course, Christianity, by design, demands ignorance.  Both naiveté and willful ignorance is at the core of a faith that is contrary to the development of knowledge through reason and rationality.  It clearly teaches people people not to trust in reason, and to only accept – without question – the dogmas of the church. Faith is elevated above reason in every church to one degree or another and there have been countless lives wasted in the world’s convents and monasteries. These lives are spent in poverty, reading the bible and praying for whatever. However, this subservience to Christ only amounts to an staggeringly immense loss of much human potential.  The fact that billions of people are convinced that all the answers they need lie in the bible and thus they have no incentive at all to look beyond it. The religious withdraw from the world while the reasoned seek to improve it. This withdrawal from the world, coupled by the teaching that the earth was created solely for the benefit of the believer has contributed to widespread ecological disaster. This belief makes it easy to justify the destruction and wanton depletion of our natural resources because, after all, Jesus is coming soon and will give us a new earth.

If the history of religion has shown us anything, it is the fact that it is inherently evil in its insistence that rational thought is to avoided at all costs. It keeps its believers in line through fear, and is the chief source of a vast majority of crime, either directly, indirectly or psychologically.  The fact that atheists and agnostics are a small minority of the prison population shows that Christianity is not only nonessential to morality, but in many cases, the antithesis. Evil has a completely different meaning to an atheist than it does to a Christian.  From a Christian point of view, evil is not following orders, thinking independently and questioning doctrines, dogmas and myth.

For those of us who are unbelievers, evil can best be described as the abandonment of our minds to the minds of others.  To us, it is a travesty to blindly accept any doctrine on faith.  We believe that the ability and willingness to stand alone, when necessary, and tell the majority that they are wrong is the pinnacle of virtue, and thus, atheism is the only honest, rational, and moral position to hold.

Bring Invocations to 9/11 Memorial

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

I would like to take a moment to side with religious leaders against Mayor Bloomberg’s decision not to have religious and philosophical invocations at the 9/11 anniversary event. I think such invocations should be allowed, and I would indeed like to volunteer to give such an invocation on behalf of nonreligious people. After all, this holiday is about what happens when religion goes wrong, and theocrats take over. I’d like 30 seconds to talk about it at the event.

I know, in order to allow me to speak, we’d have the let the Christians speak too, but that’s ok, because fair is fair. It would also be fair to have the Jews, the Buddhists, and of course, the Muslims, there to give their invocations, but I am sure that will all go over well. In fact, every religion would have to have equal time to invoke their god or say something particular to their theology, but that’s OK, because if we all tried we can still keep the meaning focused on the victims and heroes of 9/11, and not on our theological positions and the differences therein.

Why All Religions Are Scams

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

What is a “True Believer?”

A scam is defined as a claim that gives results that are something other than what was promised. The truth of the matter is that all religions are scams by virtue of the claims they make.  Their core beliefs cannot be proven, and this includes the very existence of their gods, angels, demons, miracles, etc.

Christianity, itself, has failed to even prove the historicity of it’s central character, Jesus Christ, or the existence of his core group of followers that we know as the Apostles. The entire Christian religion is built upon a house of cards that is dismantled with ease. Islam has it’s own set of problems with this issue, and the inumerable gods and related doctrines surrounding other religions cannot be ignored as well. The problem with religions in general is that each one teaches theirs is the unadulterated truth without the benefit of evidence and cannot reconcile the difference between what they promise to deliver and what they actually do, ergo, scams.

The purveyors of religion have convinced millions of people to exchange the truth for a lie. Where the Abrahamic religions are concerned, believers have been duped into believing as truth the narrow-minded, ignorant, archaic ideologies of primitive, iron-age men who taught that imaginary beings bring about changes in weather patterns or cause diseases, natural disasters and birth defects in response to disobedience of fairy tale commandments and that it is perfectly normal to believe that a deity has granted their request for a decent parking spot over the wholesale starvation of millions of innocent children.

On Diplomacy

Yet atheists are asked to be diplomatic, tolerant and accepting of religion. While there is a place for diplomacy in certain situations when discussing the personal faith of individuals, it is painfully obvious that where religion as a whole is concerned, the diplomacy that has been fostered by many atheists has miserably failed.  Atheists are not immune to emotional outbursts and polemic inspiration, and occasionally get incensed, enraged and just plain angy at some of the “god-given” commandments in the Bible and the Koran that when followed to the letter, result in the destruction of individual freedoms and loss of life. Religion is also directly or indirectly responsible for the vast majority of the wholesale slaughter, torture and terrorism that has been, and continues to be, inflicted upon humanity.

The Abrahamic religions may have peaceful attributes, but at their core, they are far from peaceful. They are poisonous, and cause otherwise intelligent people to act in ways that are antithetical to the positive growth of our societies.  They foster discrimination, bigotry, unfair judgment and in extreme cases, cause otherwise sane people to rationalize and advocate sociopathic and psychopathic behaviors. The recent “Judgment Day” fiasco is a perfect example of this, and while there are many who accuse these particular wingnuts of being “False Christians,” they are able to justify their beliefs using the same Bible that even the most liberal, progressive Christians have sitting on their bedsides.

The fact remains that diplomacy only works when both sides are willing to compromise. While many people of faith are nice folks who generally keep their personal beliefs to themselves, when backed into a corner, they are not generally willing to compromise on the issue that affect the lives, livelihoods and personal freedoms of those who choose reality over the world of make-believe. Thus, there is a growing intolerance toward the prevalence of myths and legends being taught in the place of real sciences in the classroom, as well as Christian revisionist history replacing actual facts.

Atheists Speaking Out

While some unbelievers may choose to remain silent or non-confrontational, there are a growing number who have decided that the time has come to vocalize the truth that all religions are scams. The days of handling with kid-gloves those who have been deluded into believing that ancient myths, legends and fairy tales and giving them all sorts of accommodation are rapidly coming to an end. Someone has got to tell the kids that there is no Santa Claus.

Atheists are weary of trying to fight for acceptance in society and are increasingly unwilling to put up with being forced to accept the proliferation of what amounts to be the biggest Ponzi scheme in the known universe. Many unbelievers don’t feel any obligation to turn the other cheek and have chosen to leave the niceties, tolerance and accommodation to the diplomats.

There is no controversy. Creationism doesn’t belong in our public schools.

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

One of the issues that American Atheists, Inc. tackles in our goal for the total and complete separation of church and state is the teaching  of Creationism as science in public schools, which remain a goal for many school boards – particularly in the southern United States. Creationism, even under it’s other monikers, “Creation Science” and “Intelligent Design“, is not science, nor is it intelligent. It is a department of fundamental apologetics. The sole purpose of creationism is to defend the biblical book of Genesis. It exists only for religious purposes and it abandons anything that even remotely approaching scientific research.

Because there lacks empirical evidence to prove creationism as viable, many creationists attempt to disprove the real science by using sources from other creationists and often cite references from pseudo-scientific sources or from scientists whose judgment have been clouded by religious belief. While phrases like “teach the controversy” are common talking points and serve to generate a false sense of equality amongst it’s proponents, creationism should not be presented as competitive or comparative because it lacks equal footing with evolutionary theory. Evolution concerns itself with change through discourses such as natural selection and genetic drift, and incorporates other sciences such as biology, archeology, paleontology, etc. Evolutionary theory is true to the scientific method. Creationism concerns itself with the presumption that either one of the two glaringly contradicting and well-plagiarized creation myths in the book of Genesis are the only possible explanations that account for the origin of the universe and everything in it.

The basic components of creationism that have been tested through real science, such as the age of the earth and that it was once completely covered in water, have failed. Creationism has been scientifically disproved and any vestiges of science that remained have been discredited due to the inclusion of magic or magical events, which are untestable. The fact that evolution through natural selection, which is not “chance” or “random”, has occurred and continues to occur and is without question the best explanation for the mechanism of change. Logic and evidence leads to these conclusions. Evolutionary theory consists of a tightly interwoven fabric of observations and logical conclusions. Comparing the vast knowledge base that has been accumulated, tested and proved for evolution, the continuing flow of new information that further adds to the knowledge base and a century and a half of unsuccessful attempts to falsify it by the scientific community, it becomes inconceivable that anyone still believes in the bizarre details of the Genesis creation myth.

If creationists somehow managed to eradicate all knowledge of evolution, honest men and women in the future who took to studying the facts of nature would end up rediscovering it because evolution is science, is testable and in accord with the facts of nature. Unlike creationist dogmas, which are not testable and are contradicted by the testimony of nature. It is almost scandalous that the creation myth survives in this day and age and even more preposterous that those in positions of authority on school boards would see creationism replace real science in our public schools. Creationism is an insult to the collective of human intelligence. Living a life according to myths and fairy tales is nothing short of childish and those who would cause detriment to the proper education of our children amount to little more than the “blind leading the blind” and they should have no place in deciding who is taught anything.

FLORIDA: Benefit Concert for Atheist Activist

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Our friends at Atheists of Florida are holding a benefit concert for one of their local atheist activists. We really enjoy the work this amazing woman is doing down there in Florida and wanted to pass along the details they sent us via email. Today we received a preliminary schedule from the event coordinators as well and will include that below the original email.

Benefit Concert for Atheist Activist

Lakeland, Fla. – A benefit concert for embattled atheist activist EllenBeth Wachs will be held Sunday, August 28, 2011, in Lakeland, Florida. EllenBeth is the Vice-President and Legal Affairs Coordinator for Atheists of Florida who earlier this year confronted Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd over his transfer of jail basketball goals to local churches in a politically motivated PR stunt. The event is being held to assist her with legal defense costs incurred from criminal charges which were brought against her in retaliation for publicly challenging the sheriff.

Judd, an outspoken evangelical Christian, and like-minded government officials in Polk County deployed law enforcement resources against her as a strategy to force her and Atheists of Florida to divert attention, time and funds away from further action against the sheriff’s questionable transfer of tax-payer property and, instead, toward legal expenses and resources in defense of the charges. Disconcerting as well is that Judd’s actions were meant to try to silence, defame and intimidate the atheist civil rights activist.

On March 3, 2011, EllenBeth, a retired attorney, was charged with the unlicensed practice of law, simply because she signed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, which were addressed to the sheriff, with the abbreviation “Esq.,” an honorific used by attorneys, whether practicing or not. She was arrested at her home by over a dozen SWAT garbed sheriff’s deputies and taken to Judd’s jail. Her home was searched by Judd’s deputies while they held two of her part-time employees at gunpoint. Noteably what was confiscated from her home during the search were documents sent by the sheriff’s office in response to EllenBeth’s FOIA requests, as well as items meant to inconvenience her such as her driver’s license, cell phone and business computers. Most mind-boggling is why deputies took her “Buns of Steel” workout video.

On May 1, EllenBeth was again arrested, this time on charges stemming from a petition for injunction (which was denied then voluntarily withdrawn) filed against her by a neighbor, a City of Lakeland employee. The neighbor had reported that he had heard a sound of a sexual nature coming from the privacy of EllenBeth’s house. Forty-eight days after the alleged sound, EllenBeth was again dragged out of her home in handcuffs. She was charged with lewd and lascivious conduct within the vicinity of a minor for supposedly making the sound in her house while the neighbor and his son played basketball next door. She was held in solitary confinement in Judd’s jail for almost a week.

In an effort to protect her civil rights, EllenBeth sued Judd to stop him from continuing his retaliatory campaign against her. The lawsuit, filed June 24 in Federal District Court in Tampa, alleges that Judd’s interest in her has been religiously motivated because she is an outspoken atheist and that his discriminatory actions against her violate her First Amendment rights and her right to due process.

EllenBeth is also the lead plaintiff in a federal lawsuit against the City of Lakeland and its mayor, Gow Fields. The Atheists of Florida suit, filed last year, asks Fields to replace the sectarian Christian prayer rituals at public city commission meetings with a more inclusive moment of seated silence. Noteworthy, a statement by Fields was included in the March 3 ‘Esq’ arrest affidavit, which was executed just days before EllenBeth’s critical deposition in that case against him.

The benefit concert event will be held at Evolution Records, 119 S. Kentucky Avenue in Lakeland from 4 to 7 pm. The event will include live music, atheist activist speakers from around the country, and a silent auction. The admission fee of $10 will be donated to EllenBeth to assist in her ongoing legal expenses.

Atheists of Florida, a non-profit educational corporation founded in 1992, serves the needs of a significant and growing community of atheists in Florida. As a civil rights minority, our members are tireless advocates for the constitutional rights afforded to them and all Americans. We encourage efforts to foster a fully inclusive sense of community, mutual understanding and respect.
