Happy Labor Day

A lot of us are on vacation this week, so blog entries will be rare until we get back.  In the mean time, the board may elect a new president in the next few weeks, so please take this as a suggestion box.  What would you like to say to the next president of American Atheists?

In “Democracy in America,” published in 1835, Tocqueville described with admiration and astonishment what he observed during his travels here:

The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other … Upon my arrival in the United States, the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention; and the longer I stayed there, the more did I perceive the great political consequences resulting from this state of things, to which I was unaccustomed. In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom pursuing courses diametrically opposed to each other; but in America I found that they were intimately united, and that they reigned in common over the same country.

I would have to say Tocqueville knew more about early America, than do Dave or Mr. Ed…

    • More than just imploding any traces of old-world aristocracy, ordinary Americans also refused to defer to those possessing, as Tocqueville put it, superior talent and intelligence. These natural elites, who Tocqueville asserted were the lone virtuous members of American society, could not enjoy much share in the political sphere as a result. Ordinary Americans enjoyed too much power, claimed too great a voice in the public sphere, to defer to intellectual superiors. This culture promoted a relatively pronounced equality, Tocqueville argued, but the same mores and opinions that ensured such equality also promoted, as he put it, a middling mediocrity.

Old Tokey was, not to put too fine a point on it, a blue-blooded snob who didn’t obviously believe in equality.

why do you guys delete what’s post but not phreedms

    • ‘What’ aka ‘zeke’ aka ‘whoukidn’ was banned from this blog. He was asked not to behave in a specific way, then told & moderated, then banned.
He pollutes the spam queue like crazy, repeating himself over & over again.
He’s not welcome here. Phreddy’s a pest, but he’s actually better behaved for the most part.
JCC & neowolfe have also been banned. @ least they have the sense & sanity to understand where they’re not wanted.

So what would you guys have to say to the next AA president?

I’d say ‘Convention suggestion! Pizza and donuts at every step throughout the speeches. We should have the entire convention catered by Pizza Hut and Dunkin Donuts. I bet that would boost attendance.’ hehe

    C’mon, laugh! It’s good for ya! :o )

I’ll wager a buck AA, Dave and Mr. Ed will be silent over the following…

The Council announced Tuesday that it has invited local imams to perform Islamic invocations at the beginning of the Council meetings in September.

Though meetings don’t regularly begin with any form of prayer, an email from the Common Council called it “an act of solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters.”

As I asked in the last thread…Has AA EVER filed a law suit against a muslim?

    • Phreedm,
Looking at it. Seems troublesome (as opposed to some of the other stuff you post). Will advise. DS

I just tried your link and the quote says:

On Facebook, Council Minority Leader Luis Cotto wrote: “We start every single council meeting with a prayer. 99% of the prayers are Christian based, and in three years I recall one Rabbi coming through.”

      Anyone have an explanation?

Found it. A similar quote was attributed to “Facebook user” in the comments section of the page and is not even part of the story. The story was “updated” today, but still it’s hard to imagine how that was an honest mistake.

Dave…has AA ever file suit against a Muslim cause?
