PBS & USA Today: God In America

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

WGBH is working on a special with PBS and USA Today on “God In America.” WGBH’s Director of National Marketing for Arts, Culture, and Specials (Robin Santos) has asked American Atheists to get the word out because she wants to ensure that non-faith is represented. As Mrs. Santos put it, “It is very important to me as the promotions director that all faiths and non-faiths are represented within the “pages” of Faithbook. I would be honored if you would consider making a Faithbook page yourself and hoping others at American Atheists will do as well.” Help out WGBH and make sure the non-faith voice is heard!

I completed my profile this morning.

You can’t prove god doesn’t exist! So there!

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

I thought I would share an email that American Atheists recently received. We get a lot of these, but sometimes they are entertaining enough to share.

Roger contacted American Atheists and asked:

ROGER: “Can you prove that God doesn’t exist?”

I responded briefly and simply:

BLAIR: “Can you prove that Leprechauns do not exist? Unicorns? The Loch Ness Monster? An invisible porcelain teapot orbiting around the Sun that answers prayers?

The point being, that you cannot prove a negative. And you don’t have to prove a negative. The burden of proof relies on the positive claim: that a god exists in the first place. Why believe in something without evidence? We don’t believe in faeries, Leprechauns, unicorns, Big Foot, etc. because there is no evidence to believe in them. And yet people forget their skepticism of other outrageous claims when it comes to their religion and willfully accept that an invisible man in the sky exists and answers their prayers.”

Roger was kind enough to reply with a bit of angst:

ROGER: “OK, you cannot prove a negative. So it takes faith to be an atheist, just as I said. Just like being a Christian. So what’s the big deal? You have no case.

If you cannot prove there are no Unicorns, why not start up a movement to put down belief in unicorns?

Obviously, since you have no case, the real reason for your strident criticisms of Christianity is hatred of Christianity.  All of the critiques, such as Dawkins’, are logic-based– and we Christians have always based our belief in Christ on faith, not logic.

What nonsense you people are wasting your lives on. You need a hobby.”

Wow, Roger was a bit upset wasn’t he? At least he admitted that Atheists are logic-based and Christians are faith-based (not logic, as he put it). So I figured that Roger needed some learnin’:

BLAIR: “It’s not that easy: as much as you would like it to be.

You say it takes faith to be an Atheist like it’s a bad thing. Is it? It does not take faith to not believe in something that has no evidence. It takes faith to believe in something without or contrary to the evidence. Try picking up the dictionary and looking up the word faith and you’ll understand the difference.

As to putting down the believers in unicorns: well, they aren’t trying to impose their theocracy on us, are they? Have you heard of any case where Leprechaunites have tried to pass laws that require everyone to wear green at least once a week? Have you heard of any Unicornians trying to impose a rule that you cannot use the color silver because it resembles the blood of a unicorn? Have any ufologists tried to enact legislation insisting that “One Nation Under a Flying Saucer” be added to our currency?

I think you know the reason why we are not fighting people who believe in such things. It is only the religious who feel a need to impose their beliefs upon others through legislation and laws. It is only the religious who want to establish a theocracy in this country and violate the very Constitution that gives them the freedom to think that way. After all, it is not I that contacted you out of the blue: it is your religion that compelled you to contact us. When is the last time an Atheist woke you up at 7 a.m. Saturday morning to tell you about the Good News of Science?”

I wonder what Roger will have to say next? I’ll be sure to post any subsequent replies for your reading entertainment.

Pew Forum Study: Atheists Know More About Religion Than the Religious Do!

PEW FORUM STUDY: ATHEISTS KNOW MORE ABOUT RELIGION THAN THE RELIGIOUS DO!
An Atheist Advocacy Group is, Well, Not Surprised…

A study being released today by the Pew Forum reveals that on the subject of religion, Atheists and other non believers know more about the subject than their church-going counterparts.

“When it comes to criticism of religion we know what we’re talking about,” said David Silverman, the new President of American Atheists.

Among the findings of the study:
* Atheists and Agnostics were more familiar with tenets of the world’s major religions — (Ramadan, the Koran) by wide margins.
* Atheists knew more about specifics in the Bible, such as the book of Genesis, and the fact that the “Golden Rule” was not one of the Ten Commandments.
* “Overall, the three groups that perform best in the survey are atheists and agnostics.” Non-believers received a rating of 20.9 out of 32 questions right, followed by Jews (20.5) and Mormons (20.3). Christians received a rating of 15.7.

“This confirms what we already suspected,” said Mr. Silverman. “Atheists often reach their conclusions about the universe by examining the claims of religion and then finding these claims to be wanting. This is why we challenge every believer to read, study and question their holy book. Give it serious thought before you give it your time and money.”

Blair Scott, the New Communications Director for American Atheists was also not surprised by the Pew Forum survey results. “In debate after debate it becomes clear that the Atheists and Secularists know more about religion than their opponents” said Mr. Scott. “It is this very knowledge that has led so many to become Atheists.”

AMERICAN ATHEISTS is a nationwide movement that defends civil rights for Atheists, Freethinkers and other nonbelievers; works for the total separation of church-mosque-temple and state; and addresses issues of First Amendment public policy.

The Lesbian Incident at My House: Religion Over Children

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

This is a bit long and I apologize for the length, but it was the only way to express all of the gory details or what happened to my family and to the lives of several children.

It all started innocently enough and spiraled out of control with police officers involved and the lives of several children affected emotionally and in the case of one child: physically. I will use fake names for those involved to protect their identity and innocence.

My daughter Rose has a friend named Roger. Roger had a friend named Sarah who is a lesbian. My other daughter Rachael is also a lesbian. So Rose thought it would be a great idea to introduce Rachael and Sarah. They arranged to meet at a local outside mall in Huntsville, Alabama. Rachael and Sarah immediately hit it off and began communicating regularly.

Within a couple of weeks a few children at Sarah’s school found out she was a lesbian and began taunting her. Sarah attends a private Christian school run by a Fundamentalist church that her parents attend. The Associate Pastor heard the rumors and confronted Sarah and then told her parents about it.

It wasn’t long afterwards that Sarah’s parents put two and two together and realized that Rachael was not just a friend, but a girlfriend who Sarah was involved in a relationship with. Sarah’s parents forbade her from contacting or seeing Rachael. Sarah’s parents arranged for Sarah to see a counselor that specialized in “treating gays and lesbians” (obviously a Christian counselor). In addition, they wanted Sarah to start wearing dresses and be more like a girl.

Of course love has no boundaries and the girls arranged to meet at another mall. Sarah’s parents dropped her off at one of the larger stores in the mall and she walked to Hot Topic where my daughters and Roger were waiting for her. Unbeknownst to Sarah, her parents were secretly following her.

When Sarah’s mother saw Rachael in the store she ran up to her, face contorted and red with anger, pointer finger waving in Rachael’s face, and began chastising Rachael for doing this to Sarah. Sarah’s mother accused Rachael of causing her “lesbian curiosity” and for “polluting Sarah’s mind with lesbianism.” Sarah’s mother then told Rachael, “I want to rip your face off.” According to the witnesses, Sarah’s father had to pull Sarah’s mother screaming from Hot Topic.

When my daughters arrived at home we heard from Sarah. She told us that her parents told her to pack her bags and leave. Mutual friends drove to pick Sarah up at her house and bring her over to my house until we could figure out where to go and what to do next. I contacted Child Protective Services (Alabama DHR) and let them know what was going on. Brandy, the DHR-CPS on-call representative advised me that the child could stay at the house pending their investigation and that she would contact the parents and let them know they were aware of the situation. It should be noted that if Sarah had run away, I would have called the police and her parents to let them know where she was at.

In the meantime, I contacted the Huntsville Police Department to file a formal complaint against Sarah’s mother for harassing and menacing my daughter. There were at least two Alabama Codes that she violated by doing what she did. I would later get a call from an investigator who advised that a warrant would likely be issued once I visited the Magistrate, but more on that in a bit.

My wife and I left the girls at home with Sarah and headed to a friend’s house for the evening. We were not there for more than fifteen minutes when my mother-in-law (who was staying at our house) called and let us know that a Madison County Sheriff was at the house to pick Sarah up and take her to a temporary home until her parents could pick her up. I was able to talk to the Sheriff on the phone and he told me that Sarah’s parents reported her as a runaway and he had a “pick up and deliver” order. We had no choice but to let him do his job.

Obviously we were concerned about the well-being of Sarah, but until DHR-CPS did their job, it was unfortunately out of our hands unless we wanted an obstruction of justice charge brought against us. Resigned to that fact, my wife and I tried to return to the fun at our friend’s hose.

Unfortunately, that did not last long. Sarah’s parents showed up at our house after the Sheriff left. They knew the Sheriff had already picked up their daughter, but Sarah’s crazy mother wanted to confront me.

My mother-in-law now bore the brunt of the mother’s red and contorted angry face and the poking finger in the face. My mother-in-law at the time is in a walker because she recently broke her leg in three places and is still in the leg wrap with stitches from the surgery to repair the leg and put rods and plates in. So this vile woman is haranguing a crippled woman in a walker.

Sarah’s mother demanded that I come out. When told that I was not at home she said, “He’s here! He’s just a wimp and afraid to come out and talk to me.” She said that several times, as if saying it more than once would make it somehow true. Finally the father again pulled the screaming and ranting mother away from the home and forced her into the car. It was beginning to seem that Sarah’s father might have some intelligent thoughts going around his brain: even if only temporarily.

I wished I had been there when this abhorrent and vile mother, who chose her religion over her child, showed up at my door. But everyone told me it was probably best that I wasn’t there. They’re probably right. LOL

Two days later we found out that Sarah had been put on lock down. Sarah’s parents took her iPhone away from her, threw away all of her clothes that looked like something a boy would wear (button shirts, ties, etc), was forcing her to wear dresses, pulled her out of the Christian school and began home schooling her, and then deleted her Facebook account.

Rachael and Sarah found ways to still communicate for a while, but ultimately they realized that with Sarah on lock down that the relationship would never have the opportunity to grow: so they ended the relationship.

In the meantime, Roger was brought back into the mix. Roger attends the same Christian School and church that Sarah does. Sarah’s parents and the Associate Pastor at their church accused Roger of introducing Rachael to Sarah. Roger was confronted by the Associate Pastor, dean of the school, and the football coach and told that if he ever did that again he would be kicked out of the school and that his position on the football team was in jeopardy. Roger and Sarah are now no longer allowed to see each other.

All this was started by a tattle-tale pastor who violated the confidence of Sarah. It was further enhanced by her nutcase mother who was damn-near foaming at the mouth. And that brings us back to the charges against Sarah’s mother.

After days of thinking about it, I ultimately decided not to press the charges. The investigator believed we had a case and that the magistrate would issue a warrant. The woman needed a reality check and to be honest a part of me wanted revenge to see this woman taken from her work in handcuffs and spend a few hours in jail. Even if the District Attorney threw the case out, it would be worth it watching her go through the process.

But then I realized that she would likely take out her anger at us on Sarah. Sarah had already suffered enough at the hands of her lunatic mother.

My only hope is Sarah’s father. After he dragged Sarah’s crazy mother from my house, I called him. We talked for a few minutes and I let him know why we took Sarah in and why we called DHR-CPS. He said that Sarah lied and that they did not kick her out of the house. I’m not sure I believe him, but that’s no longer relevant.

One thing he said to me was, “I know I have learned a lot this in the last few days.” Based on the context of our conversation, it seemed to me that he had been looking into lesbianism and perhaps was coming to realize that maybe, just maybe, Sarah was “born that way.” Then again, perhaps I’m reading too much into his statement and any hope I have that Sarah will one day be allowed to be who she is… well… hopeless.

The irony of all of this is that the day we found out that the Associate Pastor confronted Sara and told her parents, the Director of the Christian school put this on his Facebook page, “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Seuss”

If only he actually believed those words.

I will never understand why a homosexual would want to be a Christian. It makes no sense to me: I cannot wrap my head around it. To me, it seems like a black man wanting to be a member of the KKK (also a Christian organization… go figure).

This incident has opened up my daughter’s eyes to the vapid and angry nature of bigot Christians. I have always warned her about it. She was subject to some teasing from the Christian kids at school, but never anything on this grand scale.

It is a downright shame when parents put their religion above the love of their children. Then again… their Bible-God does the same thing, so they have a good example to work from.
