To Build or not to Build?

In this week’s edition of the Voice Of Reason, we focus on the Muslim center being built at Ground Zero.

I don’t think we can ethically stop the Muslims from building anything where it is legal to do so for any other mythology. If we would let the Christians or Jews build there, we have to let the Muslims. While I am somewhat convinced that this is being planned to incite and inflame, we as a society have to rise above that, and let them build. Then we can constantly remind them that there is a world available to them that is free of the barbarism and violence that permeates their mythology.

Say Dave…where’s your “Constitutional” outrage over what one of your own believes?

    Agreed, Dave.

What we’re fighting for is equal treatment under the law as opposed to a preferential system based on which superstition club you belong to. A religion-blind government, like a color-blind government, would make rules that apply equally to everyone and are not targeted to discriminate against particular groups. The rules allow people to build religious facilities.

The people who are outraged about this mosque are providing evidence to Muslims that the US is anti-Muslim. You see similar articles in Christian publications about how badly Christians get treated by Muslim conservatives when they go to “culturally sensitive” Muslim areas and preach on the street corner. The whole point of such exercises is to demonstrate the brutality and hypocrisy of the “other” religion (and for some missionaries, to “achieve” martyrdom). The true audience is back home. That’s the whole point of this exercise. In-group solidarity against the out-group.

The Daily Show already nailed this one.

There is no doubt in my mind this is a in your face statement by muslims.A line has to be drawn when rights are abused to advance an agenda,in this case muslim conquest of USA.And don’t think for one minute muslims don’t want to takeover.Expanding islam is part an parcel of the faith even today in backcorners of indonesia, sudan people are forced under threat of death to convert to islam. They breed large families with intent to overpower just look at europe where they refuse to intergrate in the general community, instead using their growing numbers to subvert the democratic process to create a state within the state.

Israel to deport children of legal migrant workers to maintain jewish nature of state according to statement from prime minister.
Where are US jews who are always demanding US grant amnesty to illegal aliens.Jewish hypocrites should be sent packing to Israel.
KA how can jews be a race when they are semites just like arabs.

I love the bigotry mixed in with the anti-bigotry. “Then we can constantly remind them that there is a world available to them that is free of the barbarism and violence that permeates their mythology.” There are a lot of decent muslims out there, who guess what aren’t terrorists, barbarians, or just jerks in general. Someone wants to have a mosque, who cares, except for a bunch of ignorant bigots. Oh no, the second largest religious group wants to have a place to worship where a bunch of other religious groups (most of them with fewer world wide members) already have establishments. If they tear down St. Pauls then I am cool with them blocking the mosque otherwise, stop being such a bunch of a**holes and leave them be.

A lot of Islam is political though. Do they get to abide by Sharia Law and get to marry polygamously, etc?

The hypocrisy behind the controversy is amazing. The same people who cry about not being allowed to express their religion (they are allowed, just not on the taxpayer’s dime), are the first ones who want to oppress the rights of moderate Muslims to build a cultural center two blocks away from “Ground Zero”, with no view of the site. The same people who cry about the moderate Muslims not speaking out against violent factions such as Al Queda, are criticizing the very Muslims who DO speak out for somehow building a “victory Mosque” over the graves of 9-11 victims. The center should be allowed to be built (I’d say the constitution requires such an allowance). We didn’t ban Christian churches in Waco Texas just because some nutcase thought he was Jesus and burned his besieged compound down, why ban Islamic centers in lower Manhattan?

mde…moderate Muslims? You really should do some research on who the Imam is and what he’s said in the past.

Shades of things to come to lower NYC?

By and large it seems like Imam Rauf is sincerely committed to improving relations between Muslims and predominantly non-Muslim cultures. He has made anti-terrorist statements and stresses that such violence has no place in Islam. Naturally I disagree with him on plenty of things, but I don’t see why I should regard this guy, or the Cordoba House, as an enemy organization who should have their rights denied.

I don’t know why so many atheists sympathize with the Muslims. As a supporter of secularism I don’t want any more Mosques, Churches, Synagogues, or Temples anywhere.

People seem to sympathize with Islam way to much too. As if it were an innocent religion unjustly persecuted by the rest of the world. The truth is that Islam has had more than it’s share of violence, tyranny, and attempts at world domination through conquest. I do not need to cite this because it should be common knowledge that events 9/11 happened. Or who can forget the Conquests of the religion’s founder Mohammed and the latter Caliphates.
