Unfortunately, this is a process that has to play itself out before it gets any better. Just like with any major change within a country - the changing of the minds of the people is the most difficult hurdle. Things won't change until it gets much worse - which it will.

How many years did it take for any major legislation to pass in this country that was very unpopular among the populace? How many women had to die by the hands of their husbands or boyfriends before the law stopped seeing women as property? How many blacks had to suffer before they were considered human beings too? How many gays had to suffer before they were included in the protected class?

It wasn't that long ago that it was perfectly legal to beat children - sometimes even to death - and it was viewed as the rights of a parent. This "rising of the christian nation" - or second rain as it's referred to among believers - has to run its course. It took Europe decades - even centuries - before they reached the Age of Enlightenment. Millions suffered and died before the populace finally realized the error of their ways, and that if they were going to thrive as a nation, they had to do away with a lot of their superstitious beliefs.

America is still a very young nation. We have many more deaths to go before we get there.

Good post neowolfe. They should be held responsible for their lack of action. And I'm sure that there are plenty of theological experts to take the stand to say that this is a misguided perspective and hermunuetic biblically. Well said neowolfe.

Conformnolonger,

I agree that each and every person must be held responsible for their own actions and the consequences thereof. But, until the legislators and the courts have the balls to pass and enforce laws that prevent parents from praying their children back to health, the adorable little sweeties in the photographs are going to continue to suffer needless pain and death.

Neither congressmen, nor judges can tell you what to believe, but if you break the law, they damn sure can plant your ass in jail long enough to examine what you believe. And that is my point, these assholes need to be made an example of or it will happen again and again.

The big difference between "Us and Them" is that far, far, FAR too many Christians sit on the sidelines, their eyes, ears, and mouths covered in the face of their fellow Christians committing hypocritical and evil actions that go against everything their faith supposedly stands for. And then, quite often (and this is ESPECIALLY true in Islam, as in people are killed true), those few who dare speak out are ostracized by another group of their own. When an atheist or atheist group does something misrepresentive, foolish, or stupid, the great majority of us are more than willing to speak up and voice our opinions. When such issues as civil liberties, human rights, and even human lives are on the line and the religious are silent on the atrocities made by their more fundamentalist devotees, then they deserve the most ridicule. They need to be guilted into speaking up and they need to be told to take their religion back form the crazies before they do something that hurts everyone.
