This is an article that is relevant to the Secular Coalition of America’s position that the federal government must set a national standard so that parents will not be allowed to force their children to suffer, be injured, or die as a result of religious-based medical neglect. As it is now, states are allowed to exempt certain religious people from having to seek real medical care for their seriously sick or injured children. This particular article is about a case in Oregon, and in that state at least, it appears the authorities are prepared to take legal action on these cases.

I thought the religious were and oppressed minority in USA[sarcasm].I support states rights but sometimes you have to make exceptions and the welfare of children is one.
This case does not even scratch the surface. Christian Scientists (often mistaken for Scientologists) don’t believe in medical intervention of any kind. But, they did not invent the bloody massacre of their own children. Jehovah’s Witnesses has been murdering their children for several decades because of their objection to blood transfusions.
The grand plan of Free Masons to free Americans from the yoke of the Church of England and the Roman Catholics has blown up in our faces. With all the guarantees of freedom of religion in the founding documentents even the most sincere of judges are left wondering what the fuck to do when these mental worms watch and pray as their own children die.
They are talking about a few months in prison, or some probation, but, I am thinking more along the line of a needle in the arm with lots of witnesses. Maybe, that’s not very rational, since that feeling inside that makes you adore innocent children is just a function of evolution that has kept us alive as a species, but, somehow, as these pricks are preaching to US!!!! about morality, they are taking a walk after murdering their children.
Murder you children one day, cross a line of cops to give Terry Schiavo a drink of water the next. Sad and hilarious at the same time.

what a nightmare for the parents…I know how tough it is to loose a child…is it possible for them to feel worse if they were ever to realize that religion is bullshit…
What is sad is these kind of people probably have the political clout to prevent a federal standard.
Kathleen did you know Mcchrystals brother is somekind of big shot in assemblies of god.I think Mckiernan got a bum deal.
It is generally thought, within Christian circles, that an atheist must be immoral as they have nothing with which to gauge their morals by. I have always found this thought process narrow at best. However; it has been the prevailing thought process for some time now. I wonder if you have ever had to defend your approach to atheism do to ignorance, or someone elses misguided behavior in the name of atheism? If the answer is yes than why would one professing Christian have to answer for another professing Christians misguided thoughts, words, or behaviors. Knowing that their are endless demoninational differences, and then differences from congregation to congregation within a denomination, and then even further differences within congregations is it fair to blanket the entire group under one umbrella of stupidity. Shouldn’t we instead hold one another accountable for our own actions…isn’t that what atheists have been asking for? It is intellectually dishonest to resort to name calling or whatever brutish tactics have been used in the past. We lose far to much when we begin thinking “the ends justifies the means”…no matter what end we are aiming for.
The big difference between “Us and Them” is that far, far, FAR too many Christians sit on the sidelines, their eyes, ears, and mouths covered in the face of their fellow Christians committing hypocritical and evil actions that go against everything their faith supposedly stands for. And then, quite often (and this is ESPECIALLY true in Islam, as in people are killed true), those few who dare speak out are ostracized by another group of their own. When an atheist or atheist group does something misrepresentive, foolish, or stupid, the great majority of us are more than willing to speak up and voice our opinions. When such issues as civil liberties, human rights, and even human lives are on the line and the religious are silent on the atrocities made by their more fundamentalist devotees, then they deserve the most ridicule. They need to be guilted into speaking up and they need to be told to take their religion back form the crazies before they do something that hurts everyone.
Conformnolonger,
I agree that each and every person must be held responsible for their own actions and the consequences thereof. But, until the legislators and the courts have the balls to pass and enforce laws that prevent parents from praying their children back to health, the adorable little sweeties in the photographs are going to continue to suffer needless pain and death.
Neither congressmen, nor judges can tell you what to believe, but if you break the law, they damn sure can plant your ass in jail long enough to examine what you believe. And that is my point, these assholes need to be made an example of or it will happen again and again.

Good post neowolfe. They should be held responsible for their lack of action. And I’m sure that there are plenty of theological experts to take the stand to say that this is a misguided perspective and hermunuetic biblically. Well said neowolfe.
This is God’s way of telling them, “Use modern medicine!”
Unfortunately, this is a process that has to play itself out before it gets any better. Just like with any major change within a country – the changing of the minds of the people is the most difficult hurdle. Things won’t change until it gets much worse – which it will.
How many years did it take for any major legislation to pass in this country that was very unpopular among the populace? How many women had to die by the hands of their husbands or boyfriends before the law stopped seeing women as property? How many blacks had to suffer before they were considered human beings too? How many gays had to suffer before they were included in the protected class?
It wasn’t that long ago that it was perfectly legal to beat children – sometimes even to death – and it was viewed as the rights of a parent. This “rising of the christian nation” – or second rain as it’s referred to among believers – has to run its course. It took Europe decades – even centuries – before they reached the Age of Enlightenment. Millions suffered and died before the populace finally realized the error of their ways, and that if they were going to thrive as a nation, they had to do away with a lot of their superstitious beliefs.
America is still a very young nation. We have many more deaths to go before we get there.
