Ted Kennedy: A great excuse to put church on TV

Just to be clear, I liked Ted Kennedy. As a Massachusetts native, he was my senator for most of my life, a fighter for most of my causes, and the only good reason (in my book) to oppose term limits.

But let’s not talk about his life. Let’s talk about his death, or the horrible moratorium thereafter. Priest after priest, they stepped in front of the cameras (all of the networks carried the services) and preached Catholicism to the US population. It was a huge, long, free commercial. I watched for a while. I was reminded of Columbine and 9/11 when preachers of all ilk used the tragedy to preach to the country and call it ‘news’. Frustrated, I changed the station, only to find it was on ALL the stations. A nationwide Catholic mass, for a man who was very questionably religious.

I am not proposing anything illegal has happened. The man was entitled to whatever service he dictated, and the TV stations are allowed to carry what they wish. I just wish the senator’s death was less about mythology USING his death for publicity, and more about the Senator himself.

That drunk coward got away with leaving a young woman to drown. He lied and said his 1965 immigration law wouldn’t change the nations demographics. They should have buried that SOB under the church or in a landfill.

I agree. His immigration policies are disastrous for our country. Good riddance to a bloated drunk.

I believe the term is SOAB but, your absolutely right.

Edward Klein, speaking to WAMU guest host Katty Kay, said one of Kennedy’s “favorite topics of humor was, indeed, Chappaquiddick.”

“He would ask people, ‘Have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?’”

      Excuse me…??? Talk about hypocrisy..!!!

Exactly how much taxpayer money was spent on the funeral?

      On the same subject…

Where is AA’s outrage over Barry hosting a Ramadan? When is AA going to sue? Where’s Newdow?

How anyone can believe this site is politically neutral is beyond me…

Im with ya….he pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and his sentence was suspended….

Hopefully nobody left the preists alone with the corpse.

I am as far from a defender of the Roman Catholic Church (or any, for that matter) as you’ll find, but come on: this is like saying the funeral procession was a free commercial for black cars.

Well, there is no doubt, that the Kennedys have been the movers and shakers in politics for decades. But, loathe as I am to say anything bad about the enemy of my enemy, Edward Kennedy’s last major legislative contribution was “No Child Left Behind” which has been a major disaster. In the tradition of IDEA it was an educational reform with no teeth. An attempt to force inner city schools to raise their academic achievement, but contained no funding to accomplish it. A legislative clusterfuck. A lot more testing to prove how bad a school was, but, no plan to fix it, other than vouchers and cutting federal funding. An obvious indication of how far out of touch the federal government is with the issues of inner city schools.

But, the dead can’t read this, and I don’t care about chapaquidik. What blows my mind is that after Larry Craig, republican senator for Idaho, is caught in a Minnesota airport restroom trolling for a fudge packing, is not only going to serve out his term, but the Democrats don’t have a candidate to oppose the republicans in the next race. That’s what it’s like living in Mormonland. So, Massachusetts, bitch if you want about Edward Kennedy, it’s the freedom of speech, but, truth be known, you don’t know how lucky you are.

There would be no problem in my book if we had heard the praises of Sen. Kennedy, watched the procession to and from the cathedral, but why was the mass broadcast? I mean really, no requiem piece was composed for the occasion, no new words added to the ceremony explicitly for old Teddy.
I have to agree with Dave, it was free time for religious propaganda.

  11. avatar dw says:

Whereas this was a great opportunity for religious message proliferation I think that the vast coverage of this senators funeral was linked to his name. The Kennedy’s have always drawn nationwide attention and voter enthusiasm since John F. Kennedy’s untimely demise. Ted’s long enduring presence in the senate was more to do with his name than what he supported.

I’ll miss you Ted. You represented me well.

    • avatar neowolfe says:

I will miss him too. If, really a voice of reason can ever really rise to the surface in the corrupt game of politics, it has always seemed to me that he tried.

Will I ever get tired of explaining myself to worms?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freethought

Pearls before swine? While atheists consider themselves intellectually superior to the masses, why is it your ranks contain bigots and buffoons? What is your vision for the solution to the human condition? And Whutthole, with his decoder ring, has to look up what the human condition is. And even when he’s done he won’t understand. Freethought is about getting us past the things that make us destroy each other, hate each other, resent each other. But, the message falls on deaf ears, even among the self appointed brain trust. Where are the freethinkers? Speak up!!!!

So jews should be a special class of people not accountable for their behavior? Or is it that they should they not be held accountable by non-jews? Explain your bigotry, Neoplasm?

      • avatar neowolfe says:

We have heard your list of crimes, and without exception they were committed against Hamas, and those who either willingly or unwillingly protect their leaders behind their women and children. The nation of Isreal will, as it has the right to do, protect it’s citizens by whatever measures necessary. You would expect nothing less from your government.
I have no tolerance for your sympathy of Hamas, nor your idiotic and uninformed blindness about the the middle east situation, and after several times, explaining my position, I refuse to do it again.
Instead, why don’t you explain how Bernie Madoff fits in. It only fit’s in one way. You’re resounding cry since day one, that “Jews are bad, and Dave’s covering it up”.
The number of time’s I have exposed you as a bigot, and as a freethinker “poser” can not be matched by the number of real freethinkers that have abandoned this site because the are disgusted by the thought of debating real human issues with a mushroom that has an opinion about everything.
But, it’s not my site. Nematodes, amoeba, and fungus, all welcome.
