From Ed Buckner, President of American Atheists
We are announcing today that, starting 1 July 2009, individual annual dues for American Atheists will be dramatically reduced to $20–and if two or more people living at the same address join, it will just be $35 for them. We’re making this change for two main reasons:
1. Some of our current members are under financial strain now and we cannot afford to lose them over the cost of dues.
2. American Atheists can only thrive and get stronger by having many more members than we have now. We need their intellectual support, their ideas, and, for those who can afford it, their voluntary dollars. A vigorous program will be put in place in the coming months to recruit new members nation-wide, but an important first brick in building that foundation is a dues rate that is low, affordable, and simple.
We want every Atheist in America to look up and say, “You mean I can join the best organization in America for advancing Atheism for only $20? What am I waiting for?” We want every current member to say to herself or himself, I care about this organization and I want to support it–I cannot afford to do what Helen Mitzman did and contribute $100,000. I will give what I can–but I can certainly say to my irreligious friends, ‘Here’s a brochure on American Atheists, the group you’ve been hearing about for nearly fifty years–and you can join for just $20!’”
Godless? Good!
Join us. $20.

Spread the word, friends! We all know this is a great cause!
If I had to bet, I’d say Dave wrote the first few paragraphs…and the last paragraph was written by Mr. Ed…
You do realize that this left leaning blog can never again claim that “tax cuts” don’t work…one never knows what other Truths AA might discover…
As if membership dues and taxes were the same thing.
Hmmmm…yes, the principle is exactly the same. Sometimes the “proof” is right before our eyes…
Members of AA have little if any say in what direction the board takes the organization. Reading Mr. Ed’s post and Dave’s previous post, it’s all about raising funds. Period.
A system that takes out a huge percentage of you income every year weather you like it or not in order to fund many necessities (and often the opposite) has very little to do with donating to an organization or joining it for a tiny $20 fee.
AA can drop their price to encourage more buyers just like any store can have a sale without making the statement “tax cuts don’t work.”
taxcuts without spending cuts is madness the republican party lost alot of support by doing that.
Dave,
To tell you the truth, I am loathe to throw my lot in with Neo Nazis like Whutthole and Brainless Sodomite. If freethinkers serve a function in this world, it is to rise above our stupid prejudices and short term thinking, even by the scientific community. With a few exceptions, this place is infested by idiots. You can ban me for saying so, block this post, whatever.
But, science, while the answer, the light, is driven by war innovation (new ways to kill each other more efficiently) and short term results (longevity as opposed to human gene pool degredation) and quite frankly, I get tired of arguing with these mental midgits, and I get tired of reading their crap.
It’s like grading kindergarten papers. But, this is not the time to be coloring inside the lines. They don’t understand their own irrational prejudices, shit, they aren’t even looking, they’re in denial. They don’t understand what modern medicine is doing to natural selection, they’re just afraid of the word “eugenics”. They don’t understand the difference between theory and truth. They just “know” that god doesn’t exist.
But, Dave, the only fact you can ever be really sure of is, “I exist”. The rest is assumption or pure bullshit. I’m tired of playing chess with maggots. I’m tired or debating facts with larvae. I’m tired of debating philosophy with mushrooms. And I’m tired of validating (with a response) the rudimentary impulse of an amoeba.
This is your site, run it as you wish, but, if you wish me to be a paying member, you need to take out the garbage. If that garbage is me, Okay, I can deal with that.
NeoWolfe
Wow. You know, I have something of a rule as to the other atheists on this site. Live and let live. We all have our own faults and shortcomings, myself included.
But this…Needs an exception.
I mean listen to yourself. What, the world revolves around you? god complex much? Narcissistic?
The idea begind an organization like this is to unite people behind one principle, in this case atheism. The rest of the spectrum, we need, from atheist republican to pinkcommiebastard.
You, my friend, is what is known in the biz as a starfucker. you want to either take up everyone else’s time, demand extra attention from the organizer or other officers, or demand that everything be done your way.
Look, we’re unique because we are all over the spectrum when it comes to other issues outside the unifying principle. That makes this a bit more difficult, but it’s still doable.
But we have to go along to get along sometimes. you can either be a starfucker or help the cause. It’s all up to you, because I doubt Dave will kick you off unless you get really disruptive.
So, you in or out? your choice.
if what or godless sodomite were nazis they wouldn’t be afraid of the word eugenics.
Neoplasm
I am a physician and physicist.
And you’re not.

Please explain what you think is happening and will happen to gene the “human gene pool” as a result of “what modern medicine is doing to natural selection”.
Neo,
No one is holding a gun to your head to participate on this blog. If you don’t like it, go the fuck away.
American Atheists is an organization by and for ATHEISTS. You are not an atheist. You should not be a member. I don’t want you, or anyone with your attitude, as a fellow member.
I don’t think that Dave is going to ban you from the blog. I also have complete confidence that Dave is not going to ban me, or what, or karen, or godless sodomite, or dw, or any of the myriad other atheists that you “hate” so intensely.
Deal with it, or – Go. The. Fuck. Away.
Not an atheist? I thought I read enough to see he was; just an ignorant, self centered one.
He claims to be an agnostic. He ascribes to this position because he thinks that “I don’t know” is the only reasonable response to all questions that can not be answered. He ascribes to this position even in the case of questions that are meaningless or ill-posed. His failure to realize that some questions – often those concerning religion – fit into this category is a tell-tale sign of his limited intelligence.
If I had really ever seen anything of stellar intellectual quality from Neo I could understand the rant, but I really haven’t seen anything that would qualify him to say the things said above. Yes, many good points, many argument stifling comments, but nothing that would qualify him to rate such a rant.
If you want, you can make it one less idiot by just taking your ball home and pouting. Neo Nazis, talk about projection.
Typos.
Please explain what you think is happening and will happen to the “human gene pool” as a result of “what modern medicine is doing to natural selection”.
I wouldn’t say I agree with neowolf, however you can see in the human population an increase in certain conditions that otherwise would be weeded out… Not to say that I wish them to be, however there are people in this world that, if it weren’t for the wonderful people that devote thier time to taking care of them, wouldn’t survive. That’s the driving force behind natural selection.. There are individuals that wouldn’t live long enough to reproduce and pass on thier “bad genes” and keeping those genes in the population.. As far as agriculture, it’s only through genetically modified crops and modern agriculture that the earth can support the number of people it does (almost 7 billion).. We are creating our own quagmire.
Either we’re going to halt the steep population increase through birth control and common sense or the planet will do it for us. The more people born, the more who die. Pretty simple Neo, I think everyone (at least on here) understands this, it’s just a matter of nobody wanting to face it or volunteer themselves to thin the heard. Natural selection will kick in eventually don’t worry.
I want to see if Neoplasm actually understands basic population genetics. We will see.
I doubt he does, what. it’s all the stuff of the half truths that reinforce conspiracy theories.
Unless you want to confess to engineering genetically enhanced super soldiers…
Show Me Some PROOF says:
I don’t know about thinning the heard, but nobody on this blog is going to volunteer themselves to thin the seen!
