Bus ads and Keith Olberman

I don’t usually disagree with Keith on such things, but I think this was tongue in cheek.

Last night on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Keith, as usual, presented his “Worst Person” segment. An atheist was honored by coming in number three (bronze) on his list. (We are assuming the person is an atheist. After all, we don’t really know for sure, do we?)

He pointed out that the person who coughed up the $10,000 to help fund the atheist bus ad campaign in NYC was an anonymous donor. As the campaign is geared to encourage atheists to come out, he found this move particularly amusing.

Much ado about very nearly nothing.

It was no big deal. Olbermann was poking fun where it was easy to poke. I mean, the press release went on about atheists coming out and acting publicly, and then the donor turns up to be anonymous.
Open mouth, insert foot. Gee, paint crosshairs on your forehead next time!
Let’s not forget that Olbermann has saved the worst person gold for a Monique Davis, state rep of illinois’ 95th district of Chicago when she denied an atheist the ability to speak on an issue and then told him that she had suppress that philosophy.
Keith tore her a new asshole for that!

We at NYC Atheists got a big laugh out of Olbermann’s comment, in which he actually compares apples and oranges. We of course want Atheists to come out of the closet, but we don’t require that of donors. For all Olbermann knows, the donor has already come out as an Atheist yet wants his/her largesse to be secret. As a matter of fact, I will confirm that: Yes, our bigtime donor is indeed already out as an Atheist.

But in truth, we at NYC Atheists were grateful to Olbermann for giving us nationwide publicity. You know the old saying: “I don’t care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right”?
I had the sneaking suspicion that Olbermann is secretly an atheist (small A) himself and this was the only way he could bring our NYC bus ad campaign to the attention of the public and not piss off his employers. In short, he praised with faint damn.

Much ado about everything. If freethinkers can just shed the idiots and racists, we are the hope of the planet. Just take a read through the last catagories. We have a long way to go.

Its hard not to be racist when you have been the victim of exactly these sort of remarks from this group of people:

godless key word is somali these savages don’t want to carry women or seeing eye dogs in their taxis.send them back i say.

      • atheist_republican says:

It’s terrible, the way those Obama supporters treated that gay man. You have my sympathies.

      • Oh yes, because only black people harass gays.
        Geez, that’s fucking idiotic.

      • & of course ‘reason’, w/his e.e. cummings version of soundbytes, shows just what a racist ‘tard he really is.

      • godless sodomite says:

No KA its not just blacks that harass us gays but both times I have been verbally assaulted in public for being gay (once in a restaraunt and once on the street) and had my sense of safety violated it was by black people. In addition to homophobic slurs I also had disability slurs thrown my way once by a group of black teenagers while in a shopping mall. Once you have been burned you learn to avoid the flame. This video that was posted today of a group of blacks harrasing a white gay guy hit really close to home for me and brought up some very painful and scary memories. Until you have had my experiences you cant possibly comprehend why I have my attitude that I do toward black folks.

Those dumbass kids are lucky the guy wasn’t carrying a gun. He would have been justified in using it!

      • phreedm says:

Alex…one can only imagine how frightening and painful your experience was. Bigotry and racism know no boundaries…

      • lilith says:

That video was hard to watch. The only time I was harassed like that was after I had an abortion, walking to my car from the clinic. They called themselves “sidewalk counselors”. You can’t do anything when they scream at you. I had to take the verbal abuse because it’s their protected speech. I’m cool with that.

The only control I had was internal, attitude control: I avoided eye contact, I kept calm, my mouth shut, and imagined that the “sidewalk counselors” were poo-flinging monkeys. The poor guy in the video seemed in control of his emotions. I don’t know that I could do the same again.

      • Shodan06 says:

Lilith, I’m sorry for your experience.. However, you don’t need to stand there, avoid eye contact and take it… Freedom of speech is meant to protect journalism and the like, not arrogant bigots that verbally abuse others. It’s your choice to have an abortion if you want and your right to be able to do so without being verbally assalted. There is no room in this world for people like that…

      • neowolfe says:

        dear brainless sodomite,

Why don’t you reject all groups who are bigots? You want people to understand gays and hate jews. What exactly do you bring to the table? Should gays be massacred in gas chambers and buried in mass graves? That’s what hitler wanted for you, just like the jews.

You make me laugh, you pathetic idiot,

While the apparent contradiction may be marginally amusing, the one has nothing to do with the other. I don’t even think phreedm will find anything to crow about. Of course one must never underestimate his capacity to be chickenshit.

Where did Olbermann learn journalism, Joseph Goebbels? I can’t understand why I don’t (and almost nobody else) watch him?

    • Tarma says:

Olbermann has many times made statements putting atheism and freedom of/from religion in a positive light, and that is a rarity on television, whether network or cable. He regularly trashes Republican right wing nutbars and isn’t afraid to stick it to the left as well when it’s called for. There’s just been so much more material on the right, however (Bush, Limbaugh, Palin, Bachmann, ad nauseum) :)

I don’t agree with Keith Olbermann on everything, but probably 90 percent of what comes out of his mouth sounds good to me.

Cable news has become a ratings driven, celebrity creating whore.
The integrity of the stories have so diminished that one is able to see ones own world view broadcasting as fact by the mere turn of the station.
The whole operation seems to be lifted from the Christian playbook in which their god agrees with all their prejudices, hating whom they hate and loving whom they love.
I find no use for cable news, I stick to BBC world news and then the basic three, ABC,NBC and CBS. Tainted, sure, but not nearly to the extent of cable news.

    • teammarty says:

There’e always Democracy Now, if you can find it. Last I saw it on TV was on Bridges. Now there is a REAL liberal media.

  8. reason says:

So Doug it is wrong to dislike people who berate gays who have objected to having women or seeing eye dogs in their taxi because they claim to be muslim. What do you believe in what do you value besides yourself.

[Smartgal… can I post your comments on Facebook on my link thread about this story?--Blair Scott]

    Blair, of course you may.
What’s all this talk about gays and racism on this thread? I don’t get the connection.
