Happy Darwin Week!

Enjoy this tasty video from Richard Dawkins. Did I mention he’s coming to the convention and that the coupon code “nogodblog” gives you a 5% discount on registration? Did I mention we expect to sell out? Just being thorough.

Why can’t these things happen in Reno? What’s not to love here? Gambling, hookers, and nuclear bomb sites!

Don’t forget the quickie divorce. That’s what the Biggest Little City In The World is most famous for.

I have fond memories of Reno for other reasons. About 20 years ago I got a parking ticket there for staying past the time on the meter. I was astonished to find the penalty was only $2. Cheapest ticket I ever got. When I mailed the payment to them, I sent a nice note with it saying that I thought admission to Reno was well worth the price! I hope it gave someone a smile.

Yesterday I received my copy of his Dvd “The Genius of Darwin” . Excellent, he is very convincing in his assertion that we are indeed the “fifth” ape. What are the others? Perhaps Apes, Orangutan, Chimps and Bonobos? I inserted a blog on the website of my local newspaper “News Joural” wishing Darwin a Happy Birthday. I have my profile listing me as an atheist, so my heads up, hope it doesn’t get shot off.

What do you think about this Rabbi?

    From Reuters News:

JERUSALEM, Jan 26 (Reuters) – Israel’s chief military chaplain distributed a booklet to soldiers fighting in the Gaza conflict containing a rabbinical edict against showing mercy to enemies, an Israeli human rights group said on Monday.

The group, Yesh Din, which says it is dedicated to defending human rights in territory occupied by Israel, called on Defence Minister Ehud Barak to dismiss the chief chaplain, Rabbi Avichai Rontzki, who holds the rank of brigadier general.

A booklet handed out by Rontzki during the offensive in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip quotes an ultra-nationalist Israeli rabbi saying that showing mercy towards a “cruel enemy” was “terribly immoral” and advising soldiers they were fighting “murderers”.

Yesh Din said the rabbi’s message could have been interpreted by soldiers as a call to act outside the confines of the international laws of warfare.

International calls to investigate Israel over alleged war crimes during its 22-day offensive against Gaza prompted Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday to promise military personnel state protection from foreign prosecution.

Israel faced global criticism over its assaults in densely populated areas of Gaza, where medical officials put the Palestinian death toll at 1,300, including some 700 civilians.

Ten Israeli soldiers and three civilians were killed during the campaign Israel launched with the declared aim of ending Hamas rocket attacks on its south.

Hamas clerics have often called for Israeli blood to be spilled. The Islamist militant group carried out dozens of suicide bombings in Israel before and during a Palestinian uprising that erupted in 2000.

An Israeli spokesman had no immediate comment on the booklet, written by Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, a main figure in the Jewish settler movement in the occupied West Bank. A photo of its title page, appeared in Israel’s left-leaning Haaretz newspaper on Monday.

Here in Raleigh the Museum of Natural Sciences (the largest in the South) is having a lecture series on Darwin. I plan to attend.

  8. teammarty says:

We went to a Darwin Day event at the MSU museum.
It was cool. they had some exhibits (including
a life size Lucy doll, a Galapogos travelogue and a big chocolate cake for everybody.

The reason that they don’t hold these things in Reno
is that nobody would GO, they’d be too busy
    partying.

    Off topic-
I’m surprised that there is absolutley no mention
of the one thing that is probably most important to
Atheists. The illness of Ruth Bader-Ginsberg.
Hopefully, it won’t be a perfect opportunity for
O’Same to show how bi-partisan he is.

  9. what says:

    Teammarty

What’s with the “O’Same” crap. The contrast between Obama and previous administrations could hardly be more striking. And we are only a few weeks into the Obama presidency! If you insist upon continuing with your baseless name-calling, and what it implies, then don’t be offended a few months from now when I will repeatedly point out how wrong and, more importantly, how nonconstructive your behavior has been.

  10. David Silverman dsilverman says:

    Marty,

You’re right, Justice Ginsburg’s illness has been a major concern of mine for about 8 years now, but now that we have a President and Senate that appear to support the separation of church and state, the threat is minimized.

I wonder though, whether she’d have stayed on as Justice had Gore wone on 2000.

  11. phreedm says:

Not that I’d wish ill health on anyone…(especially now that they’ve voted in socia1ized medicine for the peons)…

If Ginsburg retires, it won’t change the dynamics of the court at all…

You can’t get much more left then Ginsburg…

  12. ashtoreth says:

Oh come on phreedom, even VP Cheney used socialized medicine for his heart attacks and frequent checkups. And Bush used it for his pretzel adventure.

  13. phreedm says:

ashtoreth…apparently you haven’t kept up with the news. Now why doesn’t that surprise me…

How about rationing of medical care to our seniors?

And no…medical services to government employees is NOT socia1ized medicine…

  14. ashtoreth says:

    phreedm,

“And no…medical services to government employees is NOT socia1ized medicine…”
    Then, what is it?

  15. godless sodomite says:

Barnes & Noble is trying to make a buck off of Darwin. I noticed a large table in the local store with a sign advertising a large selection of books on evolution and Darwins life. Hopefully Darwin Day will get some media coverage this 200th anniversary year and generate interest in biology among the public.

  17. teammarty says:

Why do you think that O’SAME will appoint a
SCOTUS Justice who will uphold the constitution?
Other that the mention in the Inauguration,
I haven’t seen anything that bodes well for us.
One of the first things that he’s done is to
extend the Faith Based Boondoggle (that way,
Rev Wright can get his share of the loot).
Why do you think that we’ll get treated any differently than we were during the campaign?
(Know any trees that are single?)

Look at the Cabinet. Gates. Gregg.
This will be another opportunity to reach out
across the aisle and show how inclusive. Don’t expect anyone nearly as liberal as Bader-Ginsberg.
And if she is able to stay on, there are other Justices who are ailing, aging, or just want to
    go home.

  18. what says:

    teammarty

Why do you think that O’SAME will appoint a SCOTUS Justice who will uphold the constitution?

We will see who Obama appoints and we can all voice our opinion about who that should be. I suggest that if you value democracy then you should take part in it. That means, often more than not, that you accept when things don’t go your way while you live to fight another day. Of course one can always take the easy and nonconstructive path by just playing the curmudgeon.

I haven’t seen anything that bodes well for us.

And us is who? We Atheists do not all agree on the many and important approaches to issues before our government.

  19. NotSoFast says:

What is a True Believer. You’ll never get him to pay attention to Obama’s batshit promises to AIPAC, or his continuation of BushCo’s “state secrets” doctrine, and if he appoints the most raving atheophobe ever to SCOTUS, he’ll still be singing Obama’s praises.

  20. what says:

    NotSoFast

I will make my voice heard on all those issues. Obama will get no free ride from me. Where did you get the idea that he would? Was it because I object to teammarty and his nonconstructive curmudgeonly posts? If so then you misread me. I simply have no need for those that complain about change yet contribute no realistic path to achieve change.

  21. teammarty says:

I don’t see the threat as being minimized.
I see O’same doing the same thing that he has been on the Cabinet. Reaching out to the right.
Same thing he’s been doing on the Stimulus, bowing to the right wing, cutting jobs for tax breaks for the rich for the off chance that he’ll get a handful of votes from the Republicans. Why do you think that it will be any different with the next
SCOTUS appointee? Why do you think that he’ll consider us then? He mentioned us in the
Inaugruation speech so it will be OK. After the
way we were treated during the last election,
(by the way, know any single trees, maybe they’ll let us get married), why would you imagine that
Seperation issues would be considered? Maybe Kay Hagen will vote with us.

So don’t be offended when I tell you I told you so.

I simply do not understand what your point is. Mine is clear. Make your voice heard. Hopefully when and if you do so it will be more constructive than “woe is me”.

He’s been more constructive than you have. He sees, as I do, that the Two-Headed Monster has got to go.

  25. what says:

    NotSoFast

Wow! How many weeks has Obama been in office? And you have got him pegged huh? To say that you are being rash would be one helluva understatement!

Come on. Show me in what manner I have given Obama a free ride.

He’s been more constructive than you have. He sees, as I do, that the Two-Headed Monster has got to go.

Who is the Two-Headed Monster? Obama? And what does “got to go” mean? Does that mean replace Obama? With who? And just how do you expect to do that in the real world? Come on, get constructive. Stop the whining. It’s so unattractive.

Visit the recent thread about the stimulus package where I argue that the “bad bank” or aggregator bank is, in its present form, a bad idea. Now you show me where I have given Obama a fee ride.

What’s with the midlife crisis nonsense?
