Dave,

I am not sorry that I read the Bible, in a way, I am glad I did, because once I got away from adults telling me it was the divine truth, and started looking at it objectively, suddenly I'm head and shoulders above the idiots who still believe that crap, and I can aggressively defend my position. But, the rite of passage out of the brainwash was painful, confusing, and emotionally expensive.

Some months ago, I had a debate with a member here about a Bible vs. Science class, and I felt that properly conducted the class may yeild a graduating class of freethinkers, but I was wrong, and he was right. You let religion inside the doors of the school and trust them to follow the rules, they will not only betray you, but then you are left with how to get them back out of the door. No Bible. No Koran. No compromise. No compromise. No compromise, ever.
I see no problem in teaching the bible as literature, it is literature. But I would wonder if a "believer" could teach it as such or if he or she would teach it as "the word of god" In that respect, I of course would object.
I lived for twenty years in utah for five years,in middle school they try to teach the book of mormon as literature, the problem is that it is so badly written it can't be called literature.

The problem is not with the idea of teaching the bible as literature. The problem is in how it would be implemented. Those with a faith-based agenda would be likely to use it as a way to promote that agenda. And how would you police them to prevent them from abusing their position that way? Better not to let them get a foot in the door.

Teaching the bible as literature is not appropriate at any level lower than college where (hopefully) students have already formed more mature critical faculties.
