Here’s to the newbies!

Have you noticed all the new affiliates? Local clubs are popping up all over the place. This is thanks in part to our own Blair Scott, who leads the affiliate outreach. Check out his page and see if there is an affiliate near you at http://www.alabamaatheist.org/al/And a shout out to Dr. Angie McQuaig, a recently-outed activist who has started the Augusta Freethought Society We hope to count the AFS as an affiliate soon.

    Dave,

Well I went to the site, and read their posts about future meetings, but it obviously is not a forum for discussion. But, I’m encouraged every time I hear the term freethinker, or freethought. Because it’s bigger than keeping religion out of government, it’s about putting clear thinking and common sense into every issue we face as a country and as a species.

Just one man’s opinion, but, I find many of the people who contribute on this site have no idea about the thirst for knowledge, the objective search for facts, an open mind in the face of a convincing new outlook. It’s more like arguing with fundamentalist atheists, all you have to do is believe there is no god, and you’re in. You don’t have to leave behind your prejudices, your preconceived notions, you don’t need to hate violence, you don’t need to lose your patriotic identity, you don’t need to bother yourself with genocide in Darfur, you don’t need to bother with the logic of new econonomic plans, all you have to do is ignore the news and decide whether or not you hate Jews or me the worst, and you are a MEMBER. Not what I came looking for, and if my irritation at some of these idiots has been counterproductive to your objectives, I never intended to interfere. I’m just looking for people who think outside the spin, have intelligent opinions and wish to compare notes. People who can challenge me instead of boring me and insulting my intelligence.

Throw me a bone here and hook up with a freethinker BLOG. (smile, should the oportunity arise)

Neo, While I would hate to lose you, this blog is what it is.  But Angie at Augusta Freethought knows lots and lots of blogggers.

  4. vjack says:

Neo, there are hundreds of excellent atheist blogs out there. Oh, and there is no such thing as a “fundamentalist atheist.”

  5. dw says:

I try to ignore the air of superiority a lot of bloggers exhibit. I fine it difficult to say the least. In the end what these “superior” bloggers are upset about is that another blogger may hold a differing opinion. I have been a member of varying organizations and have left because of certain individuals who believe that once they have said something that that is the final word. There are control mongers in any group. I was hoping to find something different here, but that is not the case.

NeoWolfe is just one individual. Can he really make it so intolerable for you here?

  7. dw says:

    NotSoFast –
Haven’t left yet. Just tired of seeing so many people who have intolerant feelings toward others’ opinions. In the past I have been a member of an Amateur Radio group and the leaders were real ego maniacs, perhaps I was sensitized by that experience.
I think people should be able to express their opinions without being insulted, even if their opinions are not up to the level some insist. A correcting post would be welcomed if errors are made. For people like me who get burned fingers when looking through the bible(lol), back up info is welcomed by those who don’t mind looking through that trashy book.
I’d like to see a group form here in north central Ohio where I live. Of course they risk being cast into the pit in this city.

I would like to respond to Dave, who said this:

“Neo, While I would hate to lose you, this blog is what it is.”

I hope you didn’t misunderstand. I was not signing off (again), nor was I saying that there is no one here with whom I enjoy trading ideas. I also was not saying you should change your blog. I understand what you are trying to accomplish, you have chosen your niche and focused on doing that well. It’s a dirty job, but I’m glad YOU are doing it. Anything I said that left you with a different impression was misunderstood.

Perhaps you are correct, but I just did know what to call a person who has found himself above the brainwash of religion, yet still packs around his racial prejudice. What would you call it?

    DW made this statement:

“I try to ignore the air of superiority a lot of bloggers exhibit. I fine it difficult to say the least. In the end what these “superior” bloggers are upset about is that another blogger may hold a differing opinion.”

As others have done, you have assumed that I think my opinion has more worth than that of others in my own mind. You need to go back and read what I said. I crave differing opinions if they can be backed up with facts and coherent arguments. That is exactly what I am looking for. It’s an opportunity to grow, to see the universe from a perspective I had not imagined before. I am trying to become something more than I am, and simultaneously trying do the same for other freethinkers who have never seen the universe through my eyes.

I have been of the opinion the Phreedumb was a mindless atomiton, and have said so. But, more than one recent post indicates he actually has several neurons firing, and I gave him credit for it, not because he agreed with me, but, because he disagreed with me (boy scouts) and backed it up with a well thought out argument. That’s what I like to read. Make me question what I believe. Leave me no choice but to stop and rethink my perception. Bring it on.

What’s really deplorable is when somebody enthusiastic dispenses accusations of racism simply because they have come to an argument poorly equipped with facts.

    DuhWhat? posted this:

“What’s really deplorable is when somebody enthusiastic dispenses accusations of racism simply because they have come to an argument poorly equipped with facts.”

No, what’s really displorable is when somebody shows up with Jimmy Carter’s opinion as their best offense. “The facts” are across the history books, and I am very well equipped, but like I said before, pearls are expensive and swine don’t appreciate their value.
