Now is the time to speak up!

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/55722.html WASHINGTON ? It’s no surprise to Steve Lowe that being an atheist is considered taboo. But when the head of the Washington Area Secular Humanists saw Sen. Elizabeth Dole’s “godless” campaign ad, he did something he’d done only once before ? he sent money to a political candidate. Turns out, Sen.-elect Kay Hagan got 3,600 contributions within 48 hours of Dole airing of the controversial ad, which centered on Hagan’s attendance at a fund-raiser at the Boston home of someone active in the atheist community. The Democrat from Greensboro had immediately used the “godless” ad as an e-mail fund-raising tool, and it paid off. “I told Hagan’s campaign, ‘This is the reason you’re getting money from me ? I want you to know this is not hurting you, this has helped you,’” said Lowe said, who gave $50 to Hagan and called Dole, R-N.C., several times to complain.

To be fair, Hagan handled Doles accusations in a terrible manner and she tripped all over herself in order to show the electorate just how much of a good xian she actually is. Hagan threw the nonreligious under the bus on this one.

    Welcome to NC.

    Tell me Dave…

Why aren’t you upset about the “myth” being violated?

Steve Lowe…the head of the Washington Area Secular Humanists

“It was so offensive to me,” said Lowe, who was unveiling an unrelated ad campaign with other atheist leaders Tuesday at the National Press Club.

In that campaign, Washington buses will have signs that say, “Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness’ sake.”

Charles Francis Potter, signer of the Humanist Manifesto and author of Humanism: A New Religion, wrote, ?So Humanism is not simply another denomination of Protestant Christianity; it is not a creed; nor is it a cult. It is a new type of religion altogether

In the case Torcaso v. Watkins, the U.S. Supreme Court stated, ?Among religions in this country which do not teach what would generally be considered a belief in the existence of God are Buddhism, Taoism, Ethical Culture, Secular Humanism and others

More proof the “myth” is a one way street…

    COOL!
Now secular Humanism can get tax free status.(Or do they already?) Maybe Atheism should be a religion too. Free money.

Hagan handled Doles accusations in a terrible manner

Put yourself in Hagan’s shoes: a politician running for election in a constituency that is largely atheophobic.

Suppose you were living in Nazi-occupied Europe, and an enemy went to the authorities and declared, falsely, that you were a Jew. Regardless of your feelings about Jews, wouldn’t you take that as a vicious slander?

  5. avatar NotSoFast says:

    Obeah,

The “Secular Humanism” in the Torcaso case was a specific group that called itself the “Secular Humanist Church”. The decision was not about generic secular humanism.

  6. avatar godless sodomite says:

    NotSoFast,
I can see your point but I think that Hagan herself demonised atheists in her efforts to distance herself from us. As a North Carolinian who voted for Hagan I felt betrayed and dissapointed by her response. She could have handled it better and in a less divisive manner.

  7. avatar Cynic says:

The number of contributions in a 48 hour period mean nothing without an indication of normal trends leading up to that.

  8. avatar says:

    NSF…

    Hmmm…nice try.

The ruling clearly calls “Secular Humanism” a religion…

If we’re going to split rulings, then the “myth” would only apply to the Danbury Baptists…

And that misses the point…why isn’t AA or the ACLU or the Morons for the “myth” complaining…?

  9. avatar godless sodomite says:

How is the 1st Amendment being violated by the humanists? they paid $40,000 to a private company to place these ads.

  10. avatar Obeah says:

Thanks NSF. I thought it might be something like that but I’m too lazy to look it up.

I’m really shocked the he would quote mine like that:)

Isn’t it nice that Phreeky is finally referring to his religion as the “myth”?

  12. avatar Tuen says:

The major premise of secular humanism is its non-religious agency.

    http://dictionary.reference.com/
    definition of secular humanism:

any set of beliefs that promotes human values without specific allusion to religious doctrines.

I wear my “godless” badge with honor. It’s so promising to see the Dole campaign derail over this.

What ultimately matters, is where votes come from.

  13. avatar castletonsnob says:

I have no idea what “hypocracy” is, phreedm, but if you use those little arrows at the side of the page you can simply scroll back up to where I easily dismissed your idiocy about secular humanism.

I proved you wrong yet again. You make it so simple, too. There’s no opportunity for a discussion because your assertions have no substance. That’s your fault, not mine.

And attempting to criticize me for name-calling is the epitome of h-y-p-o-c-r-i-s-y.

I have come to expect nothing less from you.

  14. avatar says:

Ah castle…once again you’re not discussing the point…

Here…let me make it simple for you.
Why can’t a private citizen pay to have the 10 commandments posted on government property? No religion is mentioned in them….

  15. avatar castletonsnob says:

I’d be happy to, phreedm, as soon as you admit that the Supreme Court did not rule that secular humanism is a religion.

To admit one is wrong takes a kind of maturity and honesty I have never witnessed from you.

    I’m not holding my breath.

  16. avatar castletonsnob says:

    Hey, phreedm,

The ruling clearly calls “Secular Humanism” a religion…

Look it up–besides being factually incorrect, calling secular humanism a religion was not part of the official ruling, and is not legally binding in any way, shape, or form.

    Swing and a miss, again.

For the same reason I can’t pay $40,000 to have the 10 commandments posted on the side of a city bus…

  18. avatar castletonsnob says:

    Don’t worry, g. sodomite, I’ve already castrated phreedm’s pathetic non-argument.

Of course, he’ll whine on and on about his pet “myth” and never realize–or care–how he’s been duped by one of the greatest myths of all time: Christianity.

  19. avatar godless sodomite says:

I’m looking for fashionable atheist wear – not a T-shirt or hat. Seen anything that fits the bill?

Also, is their an accepted atheist-related symbol not associated with any particular atheist organization?

Because he was running against a bitter old man stuck in the cold war with a know-nothing harpy for a running mate?

Ah, yes. Instead of admitting his argument is nonsense, he changes the subject.

Adult onset ADD, phreedm, or chronic troll’s disease?

  24. avatar says:

Hmmm…come to think of it, the first person Stern interviewed was either Ren or CastleNob…

    Proves my point…

    Supidity ruled on November 4th…

Castle…no one has given an argument against my claim. Why waste anymore time on a clear case of hypocracy?

Actually, you’re the one that simply resorts to name calling instead of attempting to have a discussion…

    Prove me wrong…if you can.

  25. avatar Ren says:

    What,

Believe it or not, the Atomic ‘A’ emblem is recognized more widely than just American Atheists. It is also the symbol of choice for the grave markers of military Atheists.

    http://www.cem.va.gov/cem/hm/hmemb.asp

Might as well keep it simple. What if all the different Christian organizations wanted their own symbol? Oh… right.

Of course there is always the scarlet letter that Hitchins or Dawkins was hocking not long ago.

  26. avatar Ren says:

Hmmm…come to think of it, the first person Stern interviewed was either Ren or CastleNob…

Ever seen Jay Walking on the Tonight Show, where they show college students that can’t find the United States on a map of North America? Stupid people abound, especially here in good ol’ insular America. You could do the same thing with a random group of McCain supporters.

    Supidity ruled on November 4th…

I’m going to tell you like I was told so many times over the past eight years whenever I complained: If you don’t fucking like it here, please feel free to move to a more conservative country, like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia or perhaps Malaysia. Huh, that’s funny. The most conservative countries on the planet are all Islamic. You’re not a Muslim, are you Phreddy? You would fit in real well there. They don’t give their womenfolk or minorities equal rights either.

  27. avatar what says:

Can we get some better trolls around here. Pulleeeze!

Our resident idiot thinks that paying the government to violate our constitutional rights somehow makes it constitutional. Wow! Just Wow! I guess this idiot thinks that money purifies all. Well at least we now know the color of his gawd. Green.

  28. avatar godless sodomite says:

Why can’t a private citizen pay to have the 10 commandments posted on government property? No religion is mentioned in them….

Because it is a violation of the establishment clause of the 1st amendment of the US Constitution. What the humansits did was pay a private company $40,000 to post their ads which is perfectly legal.

Really? Last time I checked they were government buses…

There was no debate at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority over whether to take the ad. Spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said the agency accepts ads that aren’t obscene or p0rnographic.
