Yesterday I stayed up until midnight watching the stats come in. First was the hateful bitch Liz Dole getting hatefully beaten down by a 2-1 margin from her supposedly godless opponent. Yes, the opponent had put on the whole ‘how dare you call me an atheist” bit, and that sucked, but in the end Hagan will be good for the country.Obama won, which is very good for the Supreme Court. The Dems have a 4+ seat advantage in the senate, so any justices that get put up now may help to sway the SCOTUS back to the center on issues important to Atheists. This is a very good thing. We lost the FL and CA marriage amendment fights, but I am hopeful that we see Federal Civil Union law in the next two years. It has always been my point that this should solve the problem, IF straight people start getting civilly joined instead of married. All in all, I’m a happy guy. OK I’m really really happy.

We all have the same rights…
Note…I’m not the one injecting religion into this discussion. Those who can’t defend their position are…
Speaking of stupidity…
Comment from: What
So…? You voted for a far left liberal who ran on raising taxes…now you’re complaining?
NObama has his first news conderence in over 6 weeks. The market has had it’s worst post election slide ever.
I will guarantee you NObama will flip on his tax promises.
And when he does, he’ll prove exactly how gulible his sheeple were…
I think (hoping) that the pandering is over. I don’t believe that religion really means that much to Obama; he simply did election necessary pandering.
I think if religion comes up, it will be at the behest of the religion-obsessed press, and then, of course, he’ll have to return to the pandering to appease them. I don’t think (I mean I hope) religion will not affect Obama’s admin.
I wondered when the slime would enter this discussion:
Yeah, just like those ’special’ rights we gave to black people when the country made slavery illegal.
Or, when we gave those pesky women the right to vote.
Ahh, nothing like the smell of religious bigotry in the morning.
Phucking jackass.
On another note, I saw last night on the news that there are protests going on outside a major Moron church in CA.
Hopefully they will do some good.

“Read my lips: no new taxes.”
That ring any bells?
I guarantee you, phreedm, nobody around here puts much stock in your guarantees, or anything else you have to say, entertaining as they often are.
No, Phreedom, the point of the protests going on in California is that we DON’T all have the same rights. Do try to keep up.
I’m likewise glad that Dole was defeated. But the big issue for me in that whole thing was, SO WHAT IF KAY HAGAN WAS AN ATHEIST?
And 99% of the people organizing against gay rights are religiously based. I only say that because I dont know who the non-religious 1% is. I’m assuming they are out there somewhere.
phreedm
No we do not. This is bigotry, plain and simple, and the hard truth is that bigotry has rarely lost an election. Just as the courts had to enforce desegregation, they may well have to enforce marriage equality.
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. What embodies these principles more than the right to share a union with the person you love? Being against that is just plain evil.
Im feeling better now. I was having a bad panic attack yesterday and I had to lie down and try to relax and last night my chest and heart finally stopped hurting. I have closed my office for a few days and am trying to figure out what I should do next-go to CA and join the protests, organise a protest here in NC, or just try to calm down. One thing is for sure, all bets are off now regarding religion and religious people. Im done.
Phreeky really is that stupid! The point of my post about Arnold raising taxes was that even the rethuglicans know what the fiscal reality is but they run their campaigns and the government based on their fantasy and con game for as long as they can get away with it.
The RR with help of BushCo ran us into ruin and Phreeky still returns here to extol the virtues of the fantasy-based ideology that got us into this mess. There is something seriously messed up in that cat’s head.
How can one claim that having the same US constitution is equivalent to having the same rights? That is simply irrational. That cat’s head is filled with sawdust.
this is interesting
I heard on the Stern Show this week that around 70% of the black population voted to pass P8 in CA….

The irony is not missed.
Goodness
I agree with Reason.
I’ve been re-reading “Kingdom Coming”
by Michelle Goldberg. I figured that it would be perfect pre-election reading. I just got to the part where she’s saying that the Theocrats have a seat at the table with the Republicans.
Now they have one with the Democrats.
Do we??
That their is a bias against gays in black cultures is not new information. I’m not surprised in the slightest about those percentages, though I still expected the prososition to fail in CA. Underestimated the turnout, I guess. Most of this shock is in the context.
The reality is (at least in my view) the government shouldn’t be involved in marriage at all. The government should only recognize civil unions (marriage ceremonies conducted by churches would then, in the eyes of the law, be considered civil unions). Marriage is too closely tied to religion and as such should be beyond government control. By allowing the government to define what marriage is, the religious have ask the government to enforce a religious-based ideology of discrimination. Not only is this a dangerous and unconstitutional precedent, it opens the door for government involvement in other religious affairs.
I suspect it is for this reason that the courts will eventually strike proposition 8 as unconstitutional.
Further, defining marriage as between 1 man and 1 woman, and then also recognizing civil unions as a Band-Aid to grant homosexual couples equal rights, is utterly ridiculous. It?s essentially the ?separate but equal? mentality. Doing so still leaves the door open to discrimination and makes a mess of what should be a simple law.
What really bent my irony meter was all those placard wavers claiming their Religious Freedom was at stake in Prop 8.
Like they have a God given right to be bigots? What’s next for them, Gay Bashing as justified homicide?
Comment from: Cynic
What rights do I have that you don’t have?
r4d…sorry, but do have all of the same “marriage” rights…
As stated…what’s being asked for are “special rights” for a minority…
By the town idiots standard we all had the same rights in 1860. What is wrong with that boy’s brain?
Damn those blacks and women and their special rights to live and vote! That boy’s brain is defective.
Evangelicals comprise just 26.3% of the US population. How about a referendum denying this minority the special right to reproduce?
DVanWechel is on the track….
I’m civilly joined to a gorgeous hunk of vibrant steaming beauty….
what
why make gay marriage legal, after the democrats finish off the economy
gays who can leave will join other americans roaming the planet looking for a home.
the austrian bonehead gov.of california wants to raise taxes yeah that will really attract capital.
Dave…..could you add a question mark at the end of reason’s nick please…..
Charlie
or a t at the beginning?
Here’s some…
Spousal immunity, which provides that spouses cannot be compelled to testify as to confidential
communications between them, under certain circumstances
Right to adopt children as a couple (several states have banned same-sex couples from adopting children)
Right to joint custody of children after divorce
Inheritance rights
Joint property ownership rights
Immigration rights, including expedited U.S. citizenship for spouses of U.S. citizens and limited
protection from deportation for noncitizen spouses
Medical decision-making power in the event of one spouse?s incapacity
Right to share group health care insurance benefits
Right to share pension benefits
Right to social security benefits after spouse?s death or disability
Right to file joint income tax returns
Right to claim family partnership tax benefits under federal tax laws, which allow division of
business income among family members
Right to claim estate tax marital deduction
Right to compensation for the wrongful death or injury of a spouse caused by the negligence of
another
Any more questions, Phreedom? I don’t know about you and me, but gays are also denied the right to get “married” (as opposed to joined through a civil union) to their counterparts. To a heterosexual, counterparts are by definition the opposite sex. For homosexuals, counterparts are by definition the same sex. But these two groups do not have the same rights as to what they can do with their counterparts.
Don’t you feel silly, having to have these basic things explained to you, Phreedom?
Phreedm is the epitome of the dumbing down of America.
It is sad that the gay marriage rights were voted down but it was not by that much. Of course freethinkers agree that gay people should have equal rights. For atheists, it is a major glaring example of how religious texts advocate unethical ideas. There can never be anything wrong with two consenting adults loving each other. It is sad that religious people are so influenced by their religion to not see that.
I fired off several critical emails today to the LDS church for their financial support of the hateful Prop 8 and my business has joined a boycott of all products and services from the hate state of Utah. There is some effort to investigate if the LDS endangered their tax exempt status with their financial support of Prop 8 too. Im feeling much better today now that I feel like Im doing something to fight back against my inequality at the hands of religiously motivated bigots.
Look mormons, I dont want five wives just one husband.
Good for you Godless! Fight.
Comment from: Cynic
No…they are not.
More to the point. A gay man can’t marry a man. A straight man can’t marry a man either. Same right.
Prop 8 asked for “special rights”. Asking the government to redefine the definition of marriage.
Sometimes I just have to laugh at how fucking stupid you are.
Wrong. Proposition 8 seeks to amend the California Constitution to define marriage as between 1 man and 1 woman in order to supercede the California Supreme Court decision supporting gay marriage.
Sloppy, phreedm, really sloppy. Post election depression?
Yes…sloppy. You get the point though.
Try actually discusisng the facts now…
Post election depression?
Are you kidding me? This is going to be so much fun…
It will be a riot to watch those who voted for the “messiah” twist in the wind to try and defend their illinformed vote…
Tell me…do you support the idea of the federal government creating youth corps? Setting up programs so that middle school and high school students perform say 50 hours of community service per year?
And that would be?
And those are?
The only one I see twisting is you at the end of the rope you’ve hanged yourself with.
We’re still talking about gay marriage, I think. Stay focused, man, stay focused!
Hmmm…having a hard time following the discussion? OK…let me give you some help……….man.
Feel free to ask for more help to continue the discussion if you get lost…again…man.
Dear Phreedm
In June of this year my long time same-sex partner and I were married in a civil ceremony that did no harm to any idiots afflicted with preposterous religious delusions.
None of my neighbors experienced sudden plumbing leaks, broken television sets, dead car batteries, or any other type of harm whatsoever as a result of my marriage to my lovely husband.
There were some benefits to our local community. The Riverside County government in CA received some money as a result of our application for a marriage license. A civil officiant received a fee for performing our ceremony.
In addition to these tangible benefits, I found myself emotionally overwhelmed for days with the unexpected realization that I was now, in every legal sense of the word, the equal in terms of civil rights of all of my neighbors and everyone I met.
There was no purpose served by the passage of Proposition H8te except to preserve the Sanctity of Bigotry (please note that I own the Internet domain name SanctityofBigotry.com, stop by for some bitter sarcasm).
People who push a hateful, spiteful, malicious campaign of bigotry, lies, false innuendo and intentional deceit like the scum sucking Mor[m]ons from Utah seek to drag everyone down into the cesspool of power struggles and rigid sexism in which the lead their miserable fucking lives.
To everyone who supported this spiteful, nasty, malicious act of bigotry, UP YOURS.
The interests of equality and social justice for all citizens may have suffered a setback as a result of organized stupidity and hate, but this battle is not over yet, and when it is over I assure you you will be a loser in more ways than just the stupid drivel you post here.

You’re the one veering off the subject, with your comments about messiahs and youth corps, dear phreedm.
Hey, you lose some, you lose some, right? You should be used to it by now, dude.
Actually, that would be a restriction, not a right, mac…
Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy…
Comment from: castletonsnob
Great castlenob…
You’ve just blown a hole in everyone’s arguement…man. Finally some “dude” has been able to think outside of the box…
You get the prize…
So marriage is “not a right”…
So if it’s not a right…what is it? Oh yeah…a religious ceremony…
Well mac…you’ve just made a fist full of new enemies…
Screedm must have panicked at reason’s meltdown, and felt he had to rush in and defend his title as the champion nutcase on this blog.
Definitely a ceremony, but not neccessarily a religious one.
I love how this is turning out. Many in the GOP are blaming the RR for their loss while those in the RR are getting more radical and agitating for a party take over. Great! Let them have it. Without the fiscal conservatives the GOP is dead. It’s almost like a planned this. Enjoy oblivion Phreeks!
Phreeky equates same laws with same rights. How dumb is he?
Maybe if Phreeky would pretend the following to be written in crayon he would understand.
Living under the same laws NOT EQUAL to living with the same rights
