Dave’s Summary — McGone!

Yesterday I stayed up until midnight watching the stats come in. First was the hateful bitch Liz Dole getting hatefully beaten down by a 2-1 margin from her supposedly godless opponent. Yes, the opponent had put on the whole ‘how dare you call me an atheist” bit, and that sucked, but in the end Hagan will be good for the country.Obama won, which is very good for the Supreme Court. The Dems have a 4+ seat advantage in the senate, so any justices that get put up now may help to sway the SCOTUS back to the center on issues important to Atheists. This is a very good thing. We lost the FL and CA marriage amendment fights, but I am hopeful that we see Federal Civil Union law in the next two years. It has always been my point that this should solve the problem, IF straight people start getting civilly joined instead of married. All in all, I’m a happy guy. OK I’m really really happy.

    So if it’s not a right…what is it? Oh yeah…a religious ceremony…

Really? GREAT!! Then it’s a First Amendment issue, and denying the LGBT community their own ceremonies is patently unconstitutional at the FEDERAL level. I’m willing to go with that… makes the issue a slam dunk win for non-bigots.

  2. Cynic says:

Since Phreedom is intent on ignoring operative words like “counterparts”, I don’t see any reason to continue with him. Never did, I guess, but I digress.

I don’t understand how the Republicans are blaming the moderates for this loss. Are they trying to suggest that by alienating 75% of the nation rather than just 50-60% of the nation that they will be more successful next time?

  3. phreedm says:

    r4d…nice try.

So…anyone who disagrees with the definition of marriage is an automatic bigot?

  4. phreedm says:

Since the conversation is now allowed to migrate to the election…

I’m thinking that all of NOBama supporters will agree with the idea of the Federal Government creating a youth corp where participation is required…?

Most of the time, I don’t care much to argue with intellectual knuckle-draggers like you, phreedm, but I’m feeling extra charitable today, so I’ll humor you.

My original point was that to limit who someone can marry is a restriction, not a right. I never asserted or implied that marriage itself isn’t a right. But you seem unwilling or unable to comprehend this simple distinction.

Your argument, like your life, is a pathetic non sequitor. It reeks of desperation and dishonesty.

And I dare say I’ve gained a lot more friends than enemies by handily putting you in your place, phreedm.

  6. Cynic says:

What youth group are you referring to, Phreedom?

  7. UnGodly says:

As a matter of fact the California State Supreme Court has found on 2 separate occasions that marriage is a right.

The first time was when narrow minded bigots tried to interfere with the civil rights of inter-racial couples, and the more recent case in which narrow minded bigots were interfering with the civil rights of gay couples.

Given the historic, cultural, symbolic and constitutional significance of marriage, Chief Justice Ronald M. George wrote for the majority, the state cannot limit its availability to opposite-sex couples.

?In view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship,? he wrote, ?the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples.?

Yes! The way they see it their God turned its back on them because they weren’t crazy enough. It’s rich.

What youth group are you referring to, Phreedom?

“Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year,”

    http://change.gov/americaserves/

    You’ll notice they’ve changed the wording now…

I’m sure those such as r4d will scoff at the idea of worrying…

Wow…I was going to link the video of NObama discussing this very subject. But Google has removed it…

In Canada community service is required to graduate high school; it’s called a learning experience, much like science which you should look into sometime. They are also required to think critically.

You morons don’t even know who you elected.

Get your head out of your ass. The whole fucking planet is celebrating the election of Obama. America is no longer reviled. People want to talk. They have a lot of good will but sad little pricks like you would fuck it up the way Bush did.

  11. castletonsnob says:

Phreedm has now deteriorated into full-blown paranoia.

So tell us, phreedm–how did Obama’s secret police coerce Google into removing that incriminating video?

Maybe he had help from the liberal media, or Bill Ayers, or Al Qaeda–or all 3, perhaps. Yeah, that’s it.

I’ve dealt with worse with the youtube theistic fanatics. That’s where the real fun is. Since it is an pretty much constant influx of morons into specific threads repeating shit that has been refuted for decades and in some cases centuries.

Some of them even try to push Pascal’s Wager. That’s how stupid they are.

  13. castletonsnob says:

It’s a little tedious, though, when they don’t know or care to admit when they’ve been trounced.

So…anyone who disagrees with the definition of marriage is an automatic bigot?

Um, no. Disagree all you like. But what we’re really talking about here is one group enforcing their religiously derived definition of marriage onto another historically oppressed group. That is what makes it bigotry (and what makes you a bigot.)

  15. Larry Reynolds rainbows4dinosaurs says:

Sheesh, what the hell is so wrong with getting kids to do community service? As a parent of a thirteen-year-old risk taker with way too many opportunities to make bad choices, this idea actually sounds pretty goddamn wonderful. How does his plan translate into this luny-ass fear of a new Hitler Youth? Oh wait, I guess I just answered my own question: BECAUSE THE RIGHT HAS LOST ITS FUCKING MARBLES.

Just as I predicted – major role reversal. It’s the conservatives who are going to be on a serious America bashing kick over the next decade. Welcome to the Twilight Zone.

  16. NotSoFast says:

Sheesh, what the hell is so wrong with getting kids to do community service?

I guess they’re afraid it will compete with the Boy Scouts.

  17. Cynic says:

I’m not sure “community service” = “youth group” either. Think about this, Phreedom:

The religious core of the Republican party has been complaining about Obama being a marxist (for policies that pale in comparison to Reagan’s, no less) and now you’re trying to convince us he’s a bad man for suggesting that adding “community service” to the list of things we indoctrinate our children into valuing.

Now, I assume you’re familiar with churches, how they operate, and what their chief functions are in society. It’ll come as no surprize to you that I don’t much appreciate the god-ish end of things. But I do think they do certain things that ought to be done more often by those outside of churches.

Churches collect money, and, what doesn’t get put into the upkeep of the church itself is used to help those in need.

Churches organize their members and perform community service — often with the help of the money they raised.

Those are two of the things chuch-folk like yourself hold up as why religious people are superior. And yet, when a man like Barack Obama declares his admiration for just such things, he’s an evil commie bastard to you.

What gives? Are church-folk evil commies as well?

  18. cry4turtles says:

Just as the courts had to enforce desegregation, they may well have to enforce marriage equality.

Good thing we didn’t just let people vote on slavery, women’s rights, etc. Using the “poplar vote” argument is ridculous. Aren’t we supposed to learn from history?

“Common sense is NOT SO COMMON.”

What gives? Are church-folk evil commies as well?

    Burn!

  19. phreedm says:

Cynic…you’re right. Churches do serve a vital role in community service. Nice of you to recognize that.

There’s a huge difference here. Churches are voluntary. They don’t “require” community service.

Personally, I don’t care about other countries. We live in a free society that is suppose to be protected from an over reaching government by a little piece of paper called the Constitution. (Funny how no one is concerned about that document).

The Koolaide drinkers need to step back and ask themselves several questions…

Why ARE the videos being taken down from Google?

Why did NObama rush out to rewrite the web site to give it a softer approach?

While some may see the benifits from such an idea, what are the potential dangers of such a program?

What kind of “requirements” could such a program place on society in the future?

Try giving me answers to those questions…

It’s amazing how utterly blind sheeple can be. Someone brought up Hitler’s youth groups. I’m sure that many in the post Hitler election felt that his youth groups were a great idea.

Just be to be clear…I’m not calling NObama a Hitler…

I know. I’m guilty of breaking my rules as well. I’ll forgive you, if you forgive me.

Personally, I don’t care about other countries.

Surprise…Surprise…Surprise! Do you even know what Christianity is?

…called the Constitution. (Funny how no one is concerned about that document).

Iroy, Irony, Irony Will Robertson! Bush shedded it. It is hoped Obamba will restore it.

It’s amazing how utterly blind sheeple can be.

And now you resort to stealing a ubiquitous term used by atheists to describe the christian flock.
I am so enjoying your desperation.

  21. castletonsnob says:

I’ll put my Kool-Aid down for a brief moment and answer your questions, phreedm!

1.Why ARE the videos being taken down from Google?

    Answer: Yes.

2.Why did NObama rush out to rewrite the web site to give it a softer approach?

    Answer: 1970.

3.While some may see the benifits from such an idea, what are the potential dangers of such a program?

    Answer: Vancouver.

4.What kind of “requirements” could such a program place on society in the future?

    Answer: Every other Tuesday.

Can I get back to my Kool-Aid now? Sweet, sweet beverage of the inner city and trailer parks, did you miss me? I missed you…Oh, yeah…

  22. Cynic says:

There’s a huge difference here. Churches are voluntary. They don’t “require” community service.

So far as money and service are concerned, while contributions in a church are voluntary, they are certainly expected, and social pressures are certainly brought to bear. Ever heard the whispering about that one guy who makes more than most but only puts a dollar into the plate? Or that woman who said she had a prior engagement and couldn’t make pancake breafast/mission on Saturday but was really sleeping in? That’s not force, but it’s damn close to it.

But it’s not the same, no. But then again, it all depends on context. These community service proposals are first and formost a form of education. Second, they’re in exchange for so much federal assistance to pay for that education. But remember, these kids aren’t going to marching into to DC to mow Obama’s lawn. They’re going to be working within their own communities. This is hardly a selfish policy. If you can defend the accumulated hours of standing up to say the pledge of allegience, you can defend this under the same principles.

Personally, I don’t care about other countries. We live in a free society that is suppose to be protected from an over reaching government by a little piece of paper called the Constitution.

“Overreaching” is subjective. The pledge of allegiance for example. The consitution is supposed to protect individuals. It doesn’t say anything about preventing schools from adding tree planting and litter pick up to their curriculae.

I’m not sure why you brought up your dispassion for other nations, but I think it’s worth noting not caring about other nations is akin to not caring about other people.

Why ARE the videos being taken down from Google? Why did Obama rush out to rewrite the web site to give it a softer approach?

Google ranks according to popularity. Are you sure they didn’t disappear like anything else does? Even assuming they were tanked through other Google manipulations, does the Obama administration not have the right to control their own message? The internet is a source of information, and information that they don’t intend to spread is a source of MISinformation. It’s kind of their duty to control that, isn’t it?

Complaining that they’ve “softened” their stance on something you oppose is kind of weird, isn’t it? Isn’t such softening closer to what you want?

While some may see the benifits from such an idea, what are the potential dangers of such a program? What kind of “requirements” could such a program place on society in the future?

Can’t think of any that don’t involve a scarey and unnecessary trip down the slippery slope of logic. I don’t recall hearing a plan to wear uniforms and drill with rubber weaponry.

Again, one would think that instilling the virtues of service would be universally held as a Good Thing(tm), especially from the religious who try so hard to instill those values in their own communities.

Are you 100% certain that your complaint here is not a kneejerk reaction to the fact that it’s coming from Obama? I’d bet a dollar that if Sarah Palin suggested it after the shock of him actually winning this election killed him, that you’d be all on board.

I am not a gay man and my marriage to my wife was not a religious ceremony , not one mention of the SKY FAIRY and it was performed by a judge at a lake outdoors. So I guess I am not married in phrees eyes ? My wife may think differently ?? LOL

  24. honestpoet4 says:

Oh, yeah, Jaydave, you’re living in sin. Y’all are so going to hell.

I find the fear that compulsory community service for kids in school is somehow going to lead to a bunch of brown-shirts marching in lock-step to be almost as ridiculous as the concept of a personal deity.

I’m a married heterosexual, and yet the fact that same-sex couples here in the northeast are also married has not endangered our marriage at all. I still don’t get the argument that preventing same-sex couples from enjoying the benefits of marriage somehow protects my marriage. How’s that supposed to work again? I was under the impression that what protects our marriage is our commitment, our loyalty, our love, and our willingness to work at it.
