All of you in CA please make sure you get out and vote no on Prop. 8. The opposition is running a little closer than before and we need help to defeat this hateful legislation.
I think that it is horrible that the state attempt to redefine marriage. Therefore, I propose that the state get out of the business of "marrying" people. The state should *only* issue domestic partnership licenses. If a person wants to be "married" by a church, they can go ahead and do that. The state should not be in the business of defining marriage at all.

Whatcha think? Would it work?

Why change the term just because a group which has traditionally been excluded from it are now demanding it? Marriage is understood in our culture and is a purely secular institution which requires no religious officiation, ceremony, or endorsement to be valid but only a nonreligious governmental license. Since there are no secular arguments against same sex marriage the continued exclusion of gay couples from marriage in America is a goverment endorsement of religion and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional. If you are eligible to vote in CA please vote no on Prop. 8!
Oh, well put, gs:
The states should change their laws so that only a civil marriage is legal, as it is in many other countries. Two people get married at City Hall, or in a judge's chambers, and that's it. If they want to have any kind of blessing by a priest or shaman, they can do that, but it would have no legal meaning. Clergy should not be empowered to officiate at weddings, unless they do so as a representative of the state, with a license from the state.
And, of course, NO on Prop. 8.
Nice try. But you can't have it both ways. It's either a secular institution or a religious institution...
