Therefore, I propose that the state get out of the business of "marrying" people. The state should *only* issue domestic partnership licenses. If a person wants to be "married" by a church, they can go ahead and do that. The state should not be in the business of defining marriage at all.<br /> <br /> Whatcha think? Would it work? Marriage is understood in our culture and is a purely secular institution which requires no religious officiation, ceremony, or endorsement to be valid but only a nonreligious governmental license. Since there are no secular arguments against same sex marriage the continued exclusion of gay couples from marriage in America is a goverment endorsement of religion and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional.
