The second condition is being freshly reminded, in a subconscious way, of the existence of a morally tinged God or supernatural being, the researchers said.
Finally ... an explanation for Phreeky's preoccupation with this blog. Here's here as a means to whip himself into a religious frenzy lest he engage in behavior dictated by his lack of empathy encoding genes.

They're the equivalent of children who clean their rooms, make their beds and eat their veggies right around Christmas time.

Nothing new here. They're selfish because they want their reward.

And they're egomaniacs for believing an all powerful creator of the universe would give a shit about them in the first place.

They ALL belong in Bellevue with that chick who thinks the earth is flat.

It's so frustrating to think someone would join "Insert religion here" because someone told them they would be a bad person if they didn't.

But once researchers remove the two conditions, Norenzayan said, "all of a sudden you don't find any differences between the moral behavior of religious people and non-religious.
"

What!?! whys its almost as if a person doesnt need religion to be moral.

Alex...once again, you take one sentence out of context...

Religious people are inclined, under these conditions, to be more giving and honest than others because their belief in God assumes the existence of an all-knowing "supernatural police" force that monitors their behavior, Norenzayan said in an interview.

Regardless...it helps society at large.

Which clearly proves religious people tend to start with higher moral desires then non-religious people...

So much for evolution being the source of morality...

Actually you are the one who isnt reading the study. As someone with a formal university education in biology you can trust me when I tell you that I know how to read the conclusions of a scientific study, phreedum.
The premise is that religious people are motivated to a great extent to do good out of a fear based belief that they are being constantly monitored by an easily offended god so they modify their behaviour in accordance with what they believe to be this gods wishes. Im sure that if atheists thought that they were under constant surveillance by their peers on CCTV the results would be the same. This study isnt very flattering to religious people who take a self righteous moral highground over atheists.
I am, of course, of the opinion that atheists and the religious are about equally moral on average since we all share the same innate and socially evolved sense of right and wrong.

I think you're overlooking the fact that most non religious people were religious to start with, making us all pretty much starting with the same moral desires?

I say "good" to this survey. If religion is keeping people from stealing my shit & going crazy, have at it.

Phreedm, you're a complete idiot.

Religion causes more negative behavior than beneficial. So no, you're wrong when you say it "helps society at large".

Evolution was never the "source or morality", not never was claimed to be. Morality is better without religion than with. We have seen this time and time again.

You are really pathetic. One would think you'd wise up having come to these forums and reading. But I guess you don't do it to learn, because otherwise you'd be an atheist by now.
