The religious right has already abandoned the GOP, they are now Democrats.

Actually Ronald Reagan's strategy assembled the modern GOP model, aka the "three legged stool"
1. social conservatives (Religious right)
2. fiscal conservatives (anti-reg nutters)
3. National security hawks

You have to go back further than Reagan to find the preRR GOP.

Dave:

I live in an area with a large evangelical church (about 500 feet from it actually), it's had a lot more traffic recently. They either gave up their carpool program, or the gawd business is still big business (at least locally).

I don't think that Christianity is dying out, but I'm hopeful the RR's control of our politics is finished.

The RR's days are numbered. They securely and very visibly tied their wagon to the BushCo train which went off a cliff.

If the GOP loses the RR's vote then the party goes down in flames. The question then becomes: Will a new party rise from the GOP ashes or from a split in the democrats?

Obama is presently wiining the debate in online polls at CNN,MSNBC and CBS by more than 3-to-1 margin. The Wall Street Journal had an online poll which showed Obama kicking McSame's butt by 4-to-1 before the poll oddly stopped working. The WSJ results are presently not viewable.

CNN
A national poll of debate watchers suggests that Barack Obama won the second presidential debate.

Fifty-four percent of those questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey conducted after the debate ended said that Obama did the best job in the debate, with 30 percent saying John McCain performed better.

A majority, 54 percent, said Obama seemed to be the stronger leader during the debate, to 43 percent for McCain. By a greater than two to one margin ? 65 percent to 28 percent ? viewers thought Obama was more likeable during the debate.

"Obama had made some gains on the leadership issue even before the debate," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "McCain's advantage on leadership shrunk from 19 points in September to just five points this weekend. If Obama can use this debate to convince Americans that he is a stronger leader than McCain, he may be difficult to defeat."

A majority of debate watchers polled thought Obama was more intelligent, by a 57 percent to 25 percent margin over McCain. Twice as many debate watchers also thought Obama more clearly expressed than McCain, with 60 percent giving the nod to the Democratic nominee and 30 percent to his GOP opponent.

McSame was widely pitched as having an advantage in the town hall type debate. I wonder how the polls would be breaking if McSame wasn't debating in his favored format.

I am sorry for nitpicking, but I have wanted to ask this for some time now, why is John Mcsame called a war hero? Is it heroic that he served time in prison camp, if so, so be it. I remember when a hero was a fireman who ran back into a burning building to save a child, or a solder who throws himself on a grenade. If being a prisoner of war makes one a hero then the folks at Guantanimo have a very bright future in store for them.

He's a hero, in part, because when his captors found out who his father was and offered him early release, McCain refused to go. There were others who had been there longer and he didn't "jump the line" to save his own skin. Thusly ... a hero.
