God-free politics!

Although this is really a tangent to the last thread, I’d like to concentrate on one shining point that few people are seeing.Debate 1) McCain says something to the effect of “we are all hoping and praying for Ted Kennedy’s health”. There is no other mention of god or religion in the debate.Debate 2 (VP)), Biden mentions god several times, but Palin never mentions god at all, even though she is a member of the religious right. In fact, she went out of her way to state her tolerance for gay people (true or not, she said it), which could not have given the RR any warm fuzzy feelings.Debate 3) No mention of god or religion at all. Nothing. Pure religion-neutral politics with no hidden signals or nods to the Xtian conservatives.Thread topic: After 8 years, has the religious right lost its relevance? Have they been completely abandoned by the GOP? Do we dare to hope that the GOP will once again concentrate on economic and military issues (low taxes, strong military, a la Reagan), and abandon gay rights, stem cell research, and school prayer? Abortion?I’ve been saying (in a chorus of people) that the Bush years were the beginning of the end of Christianity — a last throw of panic for a dying mythology — but I am surprised by the extent of the “dissing” so quickly. Am I imagining things, or seeing them?

My bad. I thought you were talking about McSame’s recent proposal for an additional 300 billion to bail out home owners that bit off more than they could chew.

As far as the farm bill goes … I would be delighted to see corporate welfare disappear. Notice that it wasn’t in my list above.

If you would stop casting Obama as savior then maybe you would realize that there are choices to be made in this world and you don’t always (usually) get what you want.

But the Dems vs the LP? I would vote for a rethuglican before voting for a LP candidate.

    Harsh.

I’m acutely aware that I hardly ever get what I want. Life is a series of compromises. However, this year’s political candidates aren’t going to make the bleeding slow down, let alone stop.

We (the hoi polloi) can’t afford the lifestyle we’ve been living. The longer this notion of home ownership, 3 kids, yearly holiday, etc, the worse the situation is going to get.

I don’t see anyone telling people the reality of this.

Just a few years ago that notion was attainable for lots of Americans not living beyond their means. So what happened? Ronnie and the RR.

I’m no economist, but isn’t an invester basically someone who wants to make money, but doesn’t really want to work for it? I know that some level of investing is the hallmark of a healthy economy; however, the term “wall-street
investor” became synonamous with “totally rich guy” when it really means “person who syphones the sweat of of the working person’s back, and then exploits it.”

Fuck these rich investors. They can bite me.

  5. cry4turtles says:

Oh yeah, that’s right. They ARE BITING ME!

c4t: We’re all investors via pensions, IRAs, 401ks, money markets, CDs, high yield savings, etc.

The typical “wall st investor” IS the typical ‘merican.

The next time someone suggests a “windfall profits tax”, ask them why they hate the poor & middle class so much.

    what,
I strongly disagree, all politics aside, our lifestyle has been heavily financed on the future. We can’t keep that up w/o an accelerating population growth model (which no developed country ever maintains).

  8. Tim Ren says:

    What,

How long do you think it will stay in the 2200-2400 range?

I hate people that answer a question with a question, but, how long did the Great Depression last? Ten years? Sixteen if you count the war years? I know WWII is widely credited with ending the GD. Seems like we will have to get OUT of a war to fix THIS sucking chest wound.

If UBL is still alive, I’ll bet he’s doing a G-D dick dance in his cave in Pakistan. Al Qaeda need never strike us again. We’re doing a good enough job of destroying ourselves without their help.

    cry4turtles,

Oh yeah, that’s right. They ARE BITING ME!

Don’t hold back girl, tell us how you really feel. Let that ‘freak flag’ fly.

I’m just glad that I don’t have that much money in the market to begin with. That way, when I loose my life’s savings, it won’t be worth diving from the fourteenth floor, a la Donald Fagen.

    mx,

We can’t keep that up w/o an accelerating population growth model (which no developed country ever maintains).

I agree completely. However, I am a member of Negative Population Growth, and would ultimately like to see the world population be allowed to atrophy to about two billion, and then maintained at that level. No wars, no famine or pestilence, just voluntary birth control because we realize as a species it is in our best long term interest. It would be painful, economically, but then so will be the extinction of our race from population crash.

  9. mxracer652 says:

Population will have to be capped somewhere, but good luck getting most countries to agree with that.

The “Not In My Backyard” mentality reigns supreme.

I have no idea what your disagreeing with me about.

I hate people that answer a question with a question,

You might want to re-read. I was not responding to a question. I was responding to an answer.

  12. JayCooltrayne says:

well, they definitely have less political clout than they did in the prior general election. but it doesn’t really matter. in 2004 they convinced americans (rednecks mostly) that voting for john kerry would translate to boys marrying boys, innocent babies brutally murdered in clinics, and ofcourse, terrorists annihilating us all. and now, well apparently our potential next president is a fanatic muslim terrorist and anti-american communist who wants us to lose in iraq and enslave the white race. oh yeah, and obama – osama, they might be related.

why can’t america for once be the beacon of democracy that we loudly proclaim to be? why can’t we have two candidates that respect each other engage in intellectual debates about relevant matters? why can’t we have political campaigns free of smears and lies? all i am asking for is a free and fair election but that might be asking for too much in this country. it’s all very disheartening.

  13. JayCooltrayne says:

sorry, i went on a tangent somewhat irrelevant to the original discussion but i am clearly frustrated with our so called “leadership.” feel free to disregard.

  14. Tim Ren says:

    What,

Sorry, I didn’t mean to infer it was you I was talking about. I was talking about myself. Notice right after I said I hated when people answer a question with a question, I answered you with a question?

No need to apologize. It is disheartening!
