Congressman says Hello

I met Congressman Rush Holt today at a street fair. We’ve met several times (he spoke to our solstice event ten years ago) and he remembered me immediately. Dr. Holt wished for me to relay to you his firm commitment to the ideal that freedom of reigion includes freedom FROM religion, otherwise “the first amendment just doesn’t work”. He is debating his opponent this sunday. His web site is www.rushholt.com

Well, some people may desire to be free “from” religion, but that’s not what the U.S. Constitution requires.

About the only way Atheists are ever going to be free from religion is to live in a nation of their own making where they simply don’t let in anyone who believes in God.

Otherwise, I’ll give you some cheese to go with that whine of yours.

I agree, the US Constitution has always bothered me. We love it, yet we have endless debates over exactly what it means and what it’s supposed to mean, and as far as I can tell, that’s only because it was worded so poorly. Or rather worded for a time long past. It’s primitive.

If we had to write a constitution today, I’m sure we’d do a better job, if we could actually manage to agree on some things. That part is different. lol

    Tim,

Atheists are already “free from religion,” and we don’t care whether others believe in the tooth fairy, invisible gods, or other mythological creatures. (Although we may find this humorous or pitiful).

What we do care about are their efforts to pass laws that try to secure secular power and special privileges for those share their beliefs, and to ostracize and disenfranchise those who do not share their views.

When that happens, we are not amused.

So Dave…is Rush Holt responsible for making New Jersey one of the highest taxed states in the union?

Now, I’m impressed with your sacrifice, all in the name of supporting a “myth”…

NJ also has the most millionaires of any US state.

    Hmmm….no

phreedm, I’ve long wondered why you come to this site? What makes you come back it’s painfully obvious that you’re just here to disagree with (nearly) everything that is typed here. You’re not going to convert anyone, and you’re never going to agree with Atheists over religion. So why do you come here?

  10. atheon says:

    Tim,

Are you sure the Constitution does not require freedom FROM relgion?

    You said:

Well, some people may desire to be free “from” religion, but that’s not what the U.S. Constitution requires.

Would you please explain in further detail what the Constitution does require? References also…

    Thx

How do you know? You have no idea what emails I’ve received…

  13. cry4turtles says:

Have faith that there have been converts. That way, evidence is not required.

  14. godless sodomite says:

Hmmm…yes NJ does have the most millionaires. I even lifted this from Fox News so you wouldnt scream “liberal media bias”:

phreedum you were citing a statistic about millionaires from 2006 whereas mine was from 2008. I wonder what other “facts” you selectivley use to support whatever position you have already decide is true in your own head.

Can you share, anonymously of course, some of these emails you have received from atheists who have been drawn to superstition based on your enlightened postings in here? in other words, put up or shut up.

Then the lord said….let there be a cooling hunk of metal spinning on an axis in an orbit around a burning ball of hydrogen….and so it was….

I saw Maher’s movie yesterday….I like the message that religion needs to be called out for what it is….and that we have to question why it gets credulity when its claims are so unverifiable….claims like talking snakes and virgin births and other miracles…I think monotheism is the study of made up bullshit stories that are full of the worst human attributes….like biogotry, sexism and intolerance to creative thinking…i mean wtf is blasphemy….

its time to speak out against these unverifiable claims by challenging these stories when ever you hear and see them in your public view….

who knows….maybe phreedm will give up his crusade…..his crusade to verify his beliefs by arguing with atheists over the existence of a supernatural being….

    Wisconsin-
In the xtian world, what phreedom is doing is a ministry. He probably speaks to large groups of xtains and shows our website, blog, and a well done powerpoint. Then he rakes in the money through donations to his ministry, and upgrades to a newer computer…. in order to further his ministry. Then he bothers us relentlessly and goes back to report just how much he has bothered us. IGNORE HIM! :)

I hope that means we can claim a tax exemption for being employees of phreedm’s ministries.

    A hypothetical question to all,

If an elected offical personally believes that women should not vote because his religious beliefs suggests that by doing so women are given authority over men, which is direct violation of the Bible.

King James Version 1 Timothy 2:12.
“But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.”

However, at the same time his official duties require that he upholds the constitution. In this case, it would be the 19th amendment. As you all know, the 19th amendment is the SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND and states that womens rights to vote cannot be abridged.

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate
    legislation.

    http://www.gpoaccess.gov/constitution/pdf/con001.pdf

In the scenario above, will the official:
    * …create a conflict between the 1st and 19th amendment if he were act on his personal beliefs by denying women the right to vote?
    * Effectively create a religious state by acting on his personal beliefs in that one instance?

And if so, wouldn’t this conflict require a clear and concise distinction between freedom of religion and freedom from religion as it relates to application of the law?

    Please respond…

I saw it on Friday. I liked the movie, but was disappointed in the direction (Larry Charles’s fault). I was also disappointed that Rael’s interview got cut (maybe it’ll be on the DVD…).
It’s a little late now, but the movie should have been given its own post.

I wonder if we will see the newest testimonial found in some never before explored cave filled with 21 st century made up stories….a version with dinosaurs, less sexism, less violence and elements of ID….

I think today when ever I see symbols of this non sense I will have to call it out…..boy am I gonna be busy…cause I work in the basement of a catholic church….

on another note we got the skinny on what happened to the economy from the poop….I paraphrase that its a material thang and that god is a better foundation….wow poop….whats that shinny stuff that decorates your castle….

A little more on topic than my last post:
Rush Holt voted for the bailout. Not good in my book (but maybe good in yours…).

  25. atheon says:

    Charlie,

There’s no limit to what the Intellectually Deluded (ID) will do to derive truth from fiction.

If seeing an image on a piece of toast that resembles the “Virgin Marie” qualifies as proof of a mythological God; then one could reasonably assume that new testimonies could be found in a never before explored cave or maybe even a nonexistent cave.

No matter what… I’m sure the contents of the cave will be even more miraculous than the location of the cave itself.

I get it. phreedm is really Sarah Palin incognito. It all makes sense now because I asked why he/she/it keeps coming back here and the answer I get was that I had no idea how many emails he/she/it gets. Way to avoid answering the question there, Sarah. Seems to be the only thing you’re good at.
