I'm an Aussie ex-pat now living in Thailand. After reading all Dr Carl Sagan's books on the universe and other subjects, I've come to the conclusion that Lenon was right when he made that profound statement ie., "Religion is the opiate of the masses" I now firmly believe there is no God and that every thing that happens is the result of evolution, cause and effect and complexity and chaos! ... Does anyone agree? ... IAN WENSOR - wensor.ian@gmail.com

That was Marx, I think. And yes, cause and effect sums it up nicely.

As for the debate, I'm not sure it was as decisive as Dave does, but Obama probably did win.

No God in the debate, except right at first when McCain said "our thoughts and prayers are with Senator Kennedy" (Actually I might not be quoting him word-for-word, but he did say something to that effect) But the debate did go on without God. I hope whoever ends up President stays that way. I wonder if the Vice Presidential debates will end up Godless with Palin being the holy-roller she is.

I thought that McSame acted like a grumpy old man, and was quite uncomfortable with Obama. Obama was pretty forceful with setting out his positions, while McSame was waffleing. (waffling?) I'd give Obama a slight edge on this debate, but nobody really made any screwups, like claiming Poland was not in the Soviet sphere (Ford was SO entertaining).

I watched, popcorn in hand. I think Obama won, but McStain did better than I expected from him. He was obviously uncomfortable making direct eye contact with Obama, especially when Barack was being critical of him or correcting something he'd said. His biggest weapon seemed to be the Barack doesn't seem to understand" line, which I didn't buy for a second. Cheers to Jim Lehrer for trying to egg them into going after one another's jugulars.

It was great that the audience was sworn to silence so the debate wasn't bogged down with waiting for applause to fade incessantly.

NBC had a cool fact-check session afterward saying the thing about the letter Eisenhower wrote offering to resign wasn't true. McCain's claim that Obama didn't sit in on any of the meetings chaired by Biden's subcommittee was false, plus his own committee called 7 meetings and he didn't attend any. Both their plans would increase the deficit (in relation to the question about the bail out plan). I forget what else. Oh, Ted Kennedy had gone to the hospital, but was treated and released by the time of the debate.

Which brings me to>>> sorry Dave, almost no religion: McCain offere thoughts and prayers for "The Lion of the Senate" before he began his first response.

Yes, where was the lipsticked bulldog? I've read that a campaign insider has said that practice debate sessions have been disastrous, so maybe they were all in a back room somewhere maxed out on X-anax. Can't wait for that one next week though! Maybe they'll substitute Tina Fey for her?

My take (personal opinion): Obama won. I'm not saying this because I went in leaning his way (which I did), I'm saying this because McBush was rude, obtuse, and clearly looked like Grandpa or a weird uncle that occasionally gets invited to dinner. McCain was worse than I thought he'd be.

Wow...deep Dave. Very deep.

Bio-diesel. Yeah, that works...seen the price of corn in the 3rd world recently?

10 years and we'll be energy independent...sure. You believe that?

Invest in education...like we don't spend enough to support the only legal monopoly...

Cut spending or increase taxes...let me think...? Yeah, that's a tough one...

Flash Polls have McCain as the winner...

I did not watch. I will not watch an anti-democratic show of corporate dominance over LEGITIMATE THIRD PARTY CANDIDATES.

How dare you call it a "debate" when the only candidate capable of the job, at this critical junction in history, was not allowed to attend!?!

How quickly people forget past transgressions by both candidates! Come on people ...www.votenader.org... Don't throw away your vote on the two corporate candidates
Oh there goes McCain beating the drum of war against Iran over nuclear arms despite the fact that the IAEA has verified that Iran has no nuclear weapons program.

Then he starts going off about Iran providing IEDs to Iraqi insurgents. Prove it you old fool. Iraq is awash in EIDs, aka shaped charges, because they are used extensively in the OIL INDUSTRY.
