On the GOP’s Atheists

I spent yesterday with my eclectic group of friends at an annual end-of-the-summer party. Atheists, Wiccans, and Christians (oh my) were all in attendance. As it turns out, one of my conservative Republican friends is an Atheist (or close) who is a supporter of church and state separation, but he is also a fanatic one-issue 2nd Amendment guy. He always votes Republican. Gun Rights is his hot issue, and he does not see the GOP as a threat to religious freedom. This guy was locked on to gun rights and would not budge. So I asked him to be more vocal about the need for C/S separation to his GOP friends, just as I ask all other GOPs to do. Just goes to show you how fragmented the GOP is. Hopefully the RR will continue to lose power over the party — unless they win this time.

The RR controls both parties…How could they possibly lose?!?

What never ceases to amaze me is the existence of gay Republicans. Here in Palm Springs we are surrounded by them. I’m sure my next door neighbor must be a gay Republican because he is snotty, elitist, rich, and obviously a friend of Dorothy.

Maybe the thing with gay Republicans is that they value stealing from the poor to give to the rich more than they value their own self respect.

I still do not believe in the existence of poor gay Republicans.

Being a single-issue voter is incredibly irresponsible.

Dave, your friend seems to lack an ability to prioritize : )

He’s willing to let his personal freedoms in general be restricted (the Patriot Act for example), as long as the government doesn’t come near his gun.

    Strange.

    Hi Dave,

Can you give an update on the search for a new President and Editor. Sorry if you already did this and I missed it.

    Thanks in advance.

    UnGodly,

Let me relate a short story. Myself and my two older brothers were raised in the the most ultraconservative fundamentalist environment imaginable. We all walked away with scars, but, I embraced mine. I learned to be honest in my business dealing, because then people trust you. I learned the color of your skin had nothing to do with the measure of the man. I also learned eventually that religious people are not necessarily bad people, but, they are decieved by request, to give them a false hope for purpose and immortality.
But, my oldest brother, brought up in the same house, is one of the blindest bigots I have ever known, and claims to support the Republican platform, no matter what it becomes. I cannot claim to know every gay or black republican, but I can see through him. He thinks that being replubican makes him part of the rich elite, and he can have it if that’s what he needs.
But, if you are openly gay, or black, the republicans will promote you through their party on a hot rail trying to appeal a fringe centrist voting bloc. It’s all about spin.

    Jeff,

The deadline has passed, and we are selecting a new president from an excellent pool. Look for an announcement this month, with great fanfare.

  7. neowolfe says:

    Dave,
At the risk of repeating myself, don’t underestimate the stupidity of the American voter. And I think an “excelent” pool should include more than one candidate, and it doesn’t as long as you want it to remain “excelent”.

your friend is right to support the 2nd amendment.sadly the GOP has become a graveyard for atheists.not all conservative christians are hypocrites or fascists those kind of decent christians and atheists are now persona non grata in the GOP.

Ungodly, one of my roommates was a gay log cabin Republican Navy officer reservist. We worked together and we weren’t “poor” but we both just got out of college and we weren’t rich.

I believe gay republican is more of an oxy-moron than military intelligence

I think you will find that most atheists that vote Republican have some other issue that overrides their aversion to a religious candidate, much as your gun rights friend.

As I listen to Obama spew about his religion and see all the praying going on at the Democratic convention, its rather obvious that many on this blog who plan to vote Democrat react the same way when it comes to politics.

You can rationalize it anyway you like, but its the same thing either way. Atheism is not typically the main driving force for any person, and how could it be. Atheism isn’t a “thing”. Its a “not-thing”.
