Sam Harris on Palin

http://articles.latimes.com/2008/sep/03/opinion/oe-harris3Americans have an unhealthy desire to see average people promoted to positions of great authority. No one wants an average neurosurgeon or even an average carpenter, but when it comes time to vest a man or woman with more power and responsibility than any person has held in human history, Americans say they want a regular guy, someone just like themselves. President Bush kept his edge on the “Who would you like to have a beer with?” poll question in 2004, and won reelection. This is one of the many points at which narcissism becomes indistinguishable from masochism. Let me put it plainly: If you want someone just like you to be president of the United States, or even vice president, you deserve whatever dysfunctional society you get. You deserve to be poor, to see the environment despoiled, to watch your children receive a fourth-rate education and to suffer as this country wages — and loses — both necessary and unnecessary wars. McCain has so little respect for the presidency of the United States that he is willing to put the girl next door (soon, too, to be a grandma) into office beside him. He has so little respect for the average American voter that he thinks this reckless and cynical ploy will work. And it might. Palin’s nomination has clearly excited Christian conservatives, and it may entice a few million gender-obsessed fans of Hillary Clinton to vote entirely on the basis of chromosomes. Throw in a few million more average Americans who will just love how the nice lady smiles, and 2009 could be a very interesting year.

    Karen and What,

I hope Levi pulls out at the last second. Of course, if he would have done that in the first place, he wouldn’t be in the mess he’s in now. Groan!

I think he must have been asleep that day in class and thought they said, “Coitus Uninteruptus.” Oh wait, all he got in school was, “Just say no!”

    Nevermind.

I think the picture of Palin that is developing is one of a narcissist. She knew (assuming she is not entirely vapid) that a pregnancy at her age would carry a high risk of Down’s Syndrome yet she gets pregnant anyhow.

Yep. Bill Maher featured Levi’s Myspace bio on his show last night. It was also pointed out that if Obama had a pregnant teen daughter whose black boyfirend wrote something similar on a myspace page, the election would be over.

Additionally, and this should probably be on the Palin-Joel’s Army thread, one of Maher’s panel guests, former Lt. Gov. of MD. Michael Steele challenged Bill when he called Palin a Jesus Freak. In one of these vids, one of the church speakers refers to Palin as loving Jesus first before her job as mayor, blah, blah.

Also, I wanted to agree with you for pointing out about her boarding a plane for an 8 hr. trip after her water broke, and being a multiple birth mother. The fact that she didn’t go to a hospital that had a PICU, and opted for the out of the way one back home, makes me think she hoped complications would “take care” of the Downs baby for her. it seems at the least, that she didn’t have the baby’s best interests first in her mind, but whatever her own agenda was.

As for getting pregnant in the first place, I’m guessing her age plus her running/exercise routine put her cycle in a real Russian r0ulette situation for someone who probably only uses the rhythm method for birth control. Surprise!

Does anyone here remember me saying something to the effect of “Never underestimate the stupidity of the American voter.” CNN poll of polls announced that nationwide, McBush just went from a percentage point behind to two points ahead on the bounce of his vice presidential choice. There are still the debates, and all the dirt the press can dig up about this surprise pick, but I also said, “this girl is for real”. She can lie in your face about the “road to nowhere” and make you believe it. Facts and the future of our children be damned, I’m voting my family values!!! It’s worked so well so far.

It is a very disturbing use of religionS and politics. It is as if a few gnostics have selected a candidate for the purpose of winning the election.

Minnesota Rep (R) has just piped up too. She wants more subsides for energy companies to drill in the Gulf! Pelosi said they can drill, but they can pay for it!
