Atheist Viewpoint Suggestion Box

With the recent changes in the organization, the task has fallen to me to take a leadership role in the Atheist Viewpoint TV show. We usually tape 4 shows at once, and the topics range widely. The “on-line system” is now being upgraded (thanks to Tim) so we will be able to show you more episodes on-line, and we already do the video Podcasting.I’d like to know if anyone has any suggestions as to what subjects they’d like to see discussed on the show. Debates? Special guests? Likes/dislikes? Did you know the show existed? Also, as a reminder, it would be great if you as individuals could sponsor the show. It’s good activism and doesn’t cost anything — just a bit of effort. Here is the link to the (temporary) web site for sponsorship information http://viewpoint.illdill.net/sponsorship.asp

OK, Dave. I’ve listened to two of your newer episodes of AV, and two of the older episodes with Ellen. I still wish I could view them, but c’est le vie. All in all, I preferred the newer ones. The old ones wasted over two minutes with I dunno, sound test and musak (maybe over screen credits) at the beginning and the sound was choppy in places. Ellen covered her mike a couple of times with things she was showing to the camera, and lost her mike at one time. You seemed to be more aware of the timing of the show and moved from one thing to another pretty well, while Ellen wasn’t as organized. She even had to send someone off to get some things she forgot.

One thing that happened with both of you was the talking to the camera man. At least you identified him and explained who you and Dennis were talking to. But I would suggest that you ask Tim not to talk to you during the show, because only you can hear what he’s saying. Unless you caption it on the video part and I just missed that because I only had the audio.

Another difference, and this may not hold up since I only listened to a total of 4 episodes, was that Ellen and Dennis were more ridiculing of people of faith than you and Dennis were. So your approach seems more tolerant and less rabid, yet still very proactive. (Ironic, since one of your episodes was “Nuts and News” -I expected an evisceration of the faithful.)

Dennis rambles on a bit, much like Ellen had a tendency to do, repeating the same point over and over. Alternately, he gets stuck trying to process an idea from thought to speech. While I can certainly empathize with him on that, it’s not the best quality to have as a co-host on a half-hour talk show.

The show’s probably not long enough to have call-in questions, but devoting a show to answering emails or general questions is a good idea, I think. Maybe one out of every four shows.

Keep up the good work. Looks-er, sounds like you’re on the right track.

But they’re part of the evil Allied Atheist Alliance!! Only an idiot would denounce the truly logical path presented by the United Atheist Alliance!

matador – I was the Atheist Viewpoint producer and sponsor coordinator for several years, and I can tell you that sending out the wrong episode to at least one sponsor is definitely an honest mistake. I did that a lot, and sometimes we needed to, for various reasons. It’s a big job coordinating all that, mostly because there are still more than one format for videos that stations require. Plus not all stations play episodes at the same rate. There’s so much more…It’s complicated.

is AV a good use of funds.now is as good a time as any for a review of all projects.i am not saying this because i’m against AV but think AA should use this time for a top to bottom review of everything.in light of the sinking economy AA must become more effective regarding the budget.

  5. David Silverman dsilverman says:

    Wonderful feedback. 10-q all!

We have a big job ahead of us, but I am excited to take it on.

One last question: How many of you might actually come to Cranford NJ for a live taping, if we were to have one (with cheese and wine)?

  6. David Silverman dsilverman says:

    Reason, yes and yes.

We are restructuring the organization(s) and considering everything we do. But A/V is cheap (everything is volunteer) and productive so it will continue.

    r4d & karen,

Y’all rock! There’s more truth in that episode than many of us are willing to accept!

At least the religious folks have it worse. They get themselves killed by the millions over big issues such as whether religious statues are idols or whether the host actually turns into Jesus’s flesh or not. Unfortunately, they’re still in control, so we could still be collateral damage!

science is our best ally and they are doing their best to dumb it down in the schools to maintain their trickery.

Exactly who stands in the way of education? NEA? AA? What’s happened to education since Carter created the Federal Department of Education in the late 1970’s?

Here’s a simple question…are you for “choice” in education or do you prefer the status quo?

  9. phreedm says:

Interesting how no one wants to address the recently discovered Lennon interview…but would rather ignore it and show their superior debating skills by resorting to “What do I know”s tactics…

So far Karen is the only one who gave a coherent answer…but even she has ignored the interview…

the is no authority for the federal gov’t to be involved in education.no suprise that it has been a flop.so yes i’m for choice including the right to home school.i think adults who think if they homeschool their child will not change their religious beliefs is not born out by the facts though.

I must also acknowledge the wonderful otter references. All hail Dawkins!

  14. Larry Reynolds rainbows4dinosaurs says:

Why should anybody be surprised that John Lennon once said he was a fan of Jesus? At one point in his life he actually thought he was Jesus reincarnated. Of course he had been on acid for several days straight during that episode.

And what is the point of all of this? Fuck if I know.

  15. pixel says:

Can someone fill me in on the “otter” reference. I’ve been out of touch lately.

  16. David Silverman dsilverman says:

    Pixel,

Go to your Tivo. Do a search on South Park. Find the episode that mentions Richard Dawkins. Then pick a side,

The weak little troll wants our sympathy. Awww poor thing.

    Don’t feed the f’in troll!

If we just ignore it, it might just go away.

    On Topic-
How about updating the podcasts on iTunes? Last episode is from October of last year!

  19. 1qguido says:

Thank you, thank you very much. I have to fly out early in the morning and won’t be back till Monday. I have so much to say but it is late. I have myself chuckling but will refine it for later. Phreedm, you little rascal I am waiting for your two cents on macro-economics. If you could get a train of thought rolling maybe we could develop a meaningful dialogue. Honest.

It doesn’t understand the word ‘honest’.

You are trying to open up a HUGE can of worms by baiting this idiot.

    Folks,

I’ve begun helping Tim at AA post new episodes of the Atheist Viewpoint onto the Atheist Viewpoint Youtube channel: http://youtube.com/user/illdill264742
    More are on the way!

  23. matador says:

    Dave:

I’ve seen the 1st two episodes.

    Atheist parenting – good luck!!!!

I’ll be interested in seeing how your mixed marriage works out in another ten years. Marriages don’t exist in a vaccuum. From my experience, the theistic half of the union has all the allies.

When you lock horns and she cites some kind of hokus-pokus “reason” for her position, don’t you roll your eyes just a little bit?

  24. David Silverman dsilverman says:

She does not pull that out. So far, we’ve gone 17 years and the difference isn’t getting in the way. Just lots of communication and treating each other with respect.

  25. matador says:

    Dave:

After seeing “News & Nuts”, I’m convinced that you’d have no part of such nonsense as being put in charge of all the family’s light switches on Saturdays.;-)

I must say that I was very moved by what I consider to be the most powerful statement of position by a spokesperson for this organization, submitted by you toward the end of the show – that “moderate” practitioners of religion “hurt the world” – simply by existing.

I’d like to hear more of such talk. Dennis should not only get your point, he should do some more thinking about it if he still disagrees. The squeamishness he obviously felt at hearing your remark is only residual manipulation – something that the religious put into our heads as children.

  26. Ralph Reese says:

I for one would like to see more emphasis on deeper philosophical issues and less bickering and sniping both here and on the show. How does one find meaning in a godless and uncaring universe?
