How wonderful would it be if everything was part of some divine grand plan?
An interesting yearning. One that is counterintuitive to both the theory of evolution and the ultimate futility of atheistic dogma. So, this begs the question: if atheism is so wonderfully fulfilling intellectually, why can?t it also provide the emotional comfort that everyone, at some point in their lives, will need?

Atheism provides nothing but truth. The truth is sometimes bad. Intellectual fulfillment is not emotional fulfillment, where theism has a clear advantage, but truth is truth JCC. Sh!t happens.

How wonderful would it be if everything was part of some divine grand plan?

How boring and pointless life would be if that were the case! Being a puppet in some "divine" plan? LOL! No thanks.

But alas, I am condemned to take life seriously, look on the bright sides, and try to make lemonade out of lemons. I guess that's reality for ya.

You betcha! But try a Margarita instead :)
Yah, when the tornados were passing (near)by a week or two ago, I was really, really wishing that I could beleive that there was someone out there with the power to affect the storm - someone I could bargain with, plead to, whatever . . . .

It can really be scary that there is no one "up there" capable of protecting me and mine. It doesn't make it any less true.

Dave, you are right. Shit happens and there is no way around it some days.

So here's a joke to lift your spirits. Plus, it makes such good sense. The Irish have a way of cutting right through the crap. Now I know I'm voting for McCain. ;D

"We, in Ireland , can't figure out why you are even bothering to hold an election in the United States.

On one side, you have a witch who is a lawyer, married to a lawyer, running against a lawyer who is married to a witch who is a lawyer.

On the other side, you have a war hero married to a good looking rich woman who owns a beer distributorship.

What are you lads thinking over
there?"
Dave:

Atheism provides nothing but truth.
I disagree. In its practical application, atheism denies the possibility of the truth of theism. If one's goal is to seek and acknowledge the truth where ever it leads, then atheism excludes itself in facilitating its discovery.
Intellectual fulfillment is not emotional fulfillment, where theism has a clear advantage
Hmmm, could that be by design?...But how can one be intellectually fulfilled without also being, to some extent, emotionally fulfilled as well?
Dave,

Sorry to hear things aren't going well at the moment. But as someone once said: "This too will pass."
Yeah, it's easy to understand why some people derive comfort from belief in an all-controlling entity. The rest of us just have to grin and bear it.

I disagree. In its practical application, atheism denies the possibility of the truth of theism. If one's goal is to seek and acknowledge the truth where ever it leads, then atheism excludes itself in facilitating its discovery.

To my knowledge, atheism doesn't deny the possibility of anything. It just requires solid proof before a thing is relied to on to be true. Leprechauns may very well exist -- but until somebody shows me one, I'm not going to sit around waiting for one to give me a pot of gold.

Atheism denies that theism has been proven to be true, and asserts that therefore it should not be relied upon as a spiritual crutch.

As for intellectual fulfillment, just because it's not the same thing as emotional fulfillment doesn't mean that the one can't sometimes follow from the other. Also, who said emotional fulfillment can't be found elsewhere? I get emotional fulfillment from many sources -- my wife, my family, my hobbies, and yes, even my intellectual pursuits.

Meanwhile, I know a great many Christians who are anything BUT emotionally fulfilled -- so I'm not sure theism is any big guarantee in that department.
