I'm not sure which one is better for the environment, cremation or burial.

A lot of land is taken up by cemeteries... but doesn't cremation release a lot of greenhouse gases?

Maybe mankind should research "time traveling self abortions" (that might solve the problem)

I'm really fascinated that some people believe that the body must be left unmutilated so that it can resurrect - as if the reconstruction of a pile of chunky dirt that used to be a person 20 years ago wouldn't require at least enough supernatural magic to replace a kidney or two. And what about those people who had a limb amputated? Will they forever be amputee angels? Great reasoning.

As a result of this heavy thinking, we now have people dying waiting for transplants or blood transfusions to become available. We also have a multi-billion dollar funeral industry looting the estates of the deceased person's children (over and over again each generation) in exchange for the latest in taxidermy, concrete vaults, and silk-lined, waterproof caskets, as well as a few square feet of cemetery real estate for the price you could buy an acre for elsewhere. Oh and then there are the facilities rental costs for the necessary religious ceremony.

It's not that the death of a fellow human doesn't call for some sort of social remembrance. It's that because people accept a few false premises, they find themselves stuck with ridiculous results such as paying $15,000 for a silk and mahogany body box while people all around them can't even afford to take their kids to the doctor.

If you haven't yet volunteered for organ donation, ask yourself, is there any smaller price I could pay to save a person's life than this? That goes for theists or atheists. Get off the computer and head to the DMV.
I don't think about what I want done to my body after I die, because I simply do not care.

I certainly won't then.

I'm content to leave the issue of my body up to whoever cares one way or the other. I'm equally content (or not content) with the notion of being buried, cremated, organ harvested, donated to science, shot into space, dumped into the ocean, burned on a pyre, dissolved with acid, dismembered, fed to pigs, buried under a cornfield, frozen, plasticized, necrophilized (if that's a word), preserved, mummified, saponified, petrified, ... you name it, I don't care any way.

Because I'll be dead. Or more to the point, I won't *be*.

Have fun. (By the way, no rush. I like living.)

I'm going for the donation to science thing, with cremation afterward, when they're done with me. Or just plain cremation, if for some reason I'm not acceptable as a donated body. I did some research into it last year, and there are reasons why they might not take your remains, so if anyone is thinking of that option, ya might want to look into it. AND you want to make sure that it's specified as your plan before you kick, because it has to be handled correctly.

Burial at sea is another neat idea. I'd personally go for just being thrown to some sharks, but the law won't allow that. There are actually underwater cemeteries now, where your cremated remains can be marked.

donate the whole thing to science and those who need organs

to science yes, but for keeping alive those who would otherwise die isn't in the best interest of the species.

it degrades the gene pool. and no, i'm not a nazi... i'm just saying let evolution and natural selection do their thing. what's your counter argument if any?

Dave
I never did get why the Jews were so touchy about the "whole body" thing at burial. As I understood it, they don't believe in a physical resurrection anyway, only a spiritual one. That's why Christ's "rising from the dead" was such a big deal and why they didn't think he was the true messiah. So what's the deal with that?

ChrisB

I agree with you. Organ donation sign-up is mucho importante. I've done that ever since I first got my license. I'm also on the bone marrow transplant list thru the Red Cross, though I've never been called.

Even if you don't care what happens to your body after you die, you should make some kind of decision about it. Your loved ones will have a hard enough time dealing with your death without having to make that choice at the time. At least make your feelings known to them so they won't get into any arguments over what they think you may or may not have wanted. It'd be the kind thing to do. Donation to science can't be a last-minute option. If you opt for burial or cremation, you can leave instructions such as "Don't spend any more than you absolutely have to to get the job done." (My dad said to put him in a Hefty bag and leave him at the curb, but we weren't allowed! Go figure.)

Bullshit! jews are the ones who mutilate the genitals of their sons in the name of religion.
