My atheist mother scorned "Hallmark holidays" like Mother's Day and Valentine's Day as much as she did religious and patriotic holidays.

I'm indifferent to them all. Most atheists I've met, though, enjoy the usual national nonreligious holidays, maybe to make up for the religious insanity of the other events.

I've never been comfortable with the patriotism of AA and MAAF, since anything close to nationalism smacks of a kind of uncritical civil faith to me. But that's a personal kind of alienation for me, not widely shared. It's good organizational policy to promote patriotism. Though we should be neutral on apple pie.

But Mother's Day is hardly patriotic. It's just an excuse for moms to guilt us into buying them stuff. It works.

And, for the record, Rusty, every Atheist LOVES Apple Pie. It's one of our two requirements to be an Atheist -- you have to NOT believe in any deities, and love apple pie. If you hate apple pie, you must be a Unitarian. :)

By the way, did anybody see the Mothers Day vote in the House of Representatives? H.Res 1113: Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother?s Day.

The vote was 237 to 178. All 178 opposed to the resolution were Republicans. Yep, the party of God, Guns and Gays voted against celebrating their own Moms'. And they did it just to be contrary and to vote against anything the Dems voted in favor of doing. Now that is what we call partisanship here in DC.

So Happy Belated Mothers Day to all Mothers, except Barbara Bush. She didn't get to have one. She did get a granddaughter married off though.

My son doesn?t believe in ?Hallmark? holidays either, but I sure would put the fear of god in him if he forgot Mother?s Day! I didn?t get a card, but he took me out to lunch, made me dinner and gave me a present. What a good Atheist son I have.

Well, Razzleberry Pie is much more unorthodox than Apple Pie is, so I guess my love of Razzleberry Pie makes me an unorthodox atheist then. I still do a little Apple Pie on the side though.

I got my mom an Alvin Alda video from Scientific American that showed deep sea diving, the origins of life in the deep sea oceanic ridges (sulfur eating bacteria), and shipwreck recoveries over the last 40 years or so. She likes SCUBA diving :)

I love apple pie and I'm a Unitarian. I remembered Mothers Day by wearing a white flower and then placing it on the table up front. The Intern Minister (who is sometimes too spiritual and godly for us 30% Atheists) preached a good ungodly sermon on "imperfection" but not about mothers or Mothers Day. His children's story was about mothers. And I celebrated 23 years of being a Unitarian-- and I still love apple pie-- especially without spices. Remember red flower=in honor and white flower = in memory.
