Here is something else for all of us to worry about. Attached is an article from the American Bar Association about how the religious are using an old 1884 law in Kansas to go after abortion providers and pornographers. If you can get just 2% of the number who voted in the last election for state governor to sign a petition, the state has to convene a grand jury to determine whether or not to persecute someone. And this little known law exists in six states in the United States. (Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, North Dakota, Nebraska and Nevada). I wonder if we could use this statute to get back all the money we have lost in excessive property taxes from Kansas’ tax-free religious corporations?Peter Nuhn

Insidious! A small population might be able to use these laws to repeatedly harass someone. ?No state has a provision to limit the number of grand juries a prosecutor can form to finally get the indictment he wants. If the first one doesn’t indict he can form another.? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_jury) The 5th amendment doesn?t seem to apply here.
Hey Pete…
Why not give the full story…

EXACTLY…Can you say Tom Delay?
Citizens convening grand juries? That’s got clusterfuck written all over it.
Abortion is sin,……. murder if there’s no medical reason…..same also to divorce (adultery if get married again), never get married unless you love her/him till death…not for sex alone or… trial marriage? learn how to court a girl…and know how to distinguish the right man/woman for your children… Never try to have same sex marriage because even pigs, dogs and monkeys will never try and can sense it, unlike human that was posessed by the devil.
Look unto Jesus and He will direct thy paths.
God bless.

Wow. How can people possibly support such a law designed to give the state supreme power? I thought that even repunditcans respected the bill of rights.
As I thought…no one is going to research this entire article…
The bomb thrower deliberately presented this story inaccurately…
Just wondering: would it be possible, under this law, to open a grand jury investigation into that Klein fellow who abused his authority while Attorney General?
Oh – and nice hypocrisy from the resident christian bomb thrower, who routinely deliberately presents whatever points he tries to make inaccurately.
Hear that kids? Never try to have same sex marriage. Brilliant.
phreedm,
How about you spit our your objections rather vaguely hinting at maleficence on the part of Peter?
This may sound shocking to you, but most of us have better things to do with our time than research the vague rantings of a man who believes the act of consuming the flesh of a cosmic Jewish zombie and believing him to be a god that reads your mind while you masturbates grants one immorality.
Was that a deliberate pun or a freudian slip?

…than to read stupid shit.
Our little troll is absolutely right this time. I did present only part of the facts. The part I found from someone reputable like the American Bar Association and not the part I found to be more biased and one-sided, the part by the Christian media like Catholic Online at:

Gee, a Catholic mouthpiece supports the misogynist, anti-abortion Kansas Persecutor. Like that is news, huh.

I would respectfully disagree with you here, Peter.
The christian propaganda from the catholic is not fact-based. Therefore you correctly did not include it in a reality-based posting about how christians are abusing the system for their own superstitious ends.
By the way, are we ever going to have a reality-based discussion around here without having to hear from christian propagandists trying to throw the comments off-topic?
You mean this isn’t all about playing Whack-A-Mole with snakes?
Here’s a bit of that research the troll couldn’t manage for itself.
From the Wikipedia entry for Troy Newman-
“He has shown support for Shelly Shannon who is serving a sentence for wounding Dr. Tiller in a gun attack in 1993.”
“Newman helped lead a petition drive to convene a grand jury to investigate Gilbert’s death and other alleged wrongdoing by Tiller and his clinic. On July 31, 2006, the grand jury disbanded without returning indictments.”
“Newman is an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church of America.”
“Newman and Operation Rescue West are currently under IRS investigation for charges of money laundering and tax evasion.”
“Using the donations, Newman has purchased hundreds of thousands of dollars of real estate throughout Kansas.”
“The organization remains small with about a dozen members?”
Persecut[ion] only begins to describe Newman & Company’s attacks on Dr Tiller.
Whack.
