Senators Brownback and Lieberman have introduced S. Res. 483 ‘A resolution recognizing the first weekend of May 2008 as “Ten Commandments Weekend”. I have created a legislative alert to get as many of us who oppose this type of pandering legislation as possible to write to their Senators about our objections.Thank you for all your support.Peter Nuhn
“Ten Commandments Weekend”? Seriously? Sounds like the set-up for a bad joke.
That’s some scary shit.
I wrote them some hate mail.
ah, crap. Will the religious pandering never end?
But wait. Does this mean there will be one weekend a year when the christians will actually follow their ten commandments?
I hope this will emphasize the difference between “Freedom of religion includes the right to not worship” and “I am the lord thy god you must worship me”. I E-mailed my Reps in hope they would notice.
Karen
After the weekend they can have “Fat Monday” dress as their favorite bible characters and get drunk.
Well, I sent off e-mails to my Republican senators, John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison. I have little hope that they will even read them – but, if they get enough messages, perhaps these folks will get a clue that not everyone is happy with this type of ridiculous legislation. Pretty clueless bunch, though.
I think I’m gonna barf! These people just don’t quit.
Okay, turn about is fair play. If we have a “Ten Commandments Weekend” then we ought to have a “Recognition of Atheists Weekend”.
We all need to bombard our elected represenatives by email, but we need to go further and make a telephone call. Calls count for more than emails. It’s no big deal. Make the call and when one of the staff answers all you have to do is say something like this:
“I’m a constitutent of So&So and I want him/her to know that Senate Resolution 483 offends those of us who believe in the wall of separation between government and religion. I strongly oppose any endorsement or vote for a resolution which endorses a “Ten Commandments Weekend.”
Then say thanks and hang up.

Thanks for the alert. Action taken!
Thank you for the alert. Emails sent.
Of course they won’t quit! When do the voices stop in the town idiot ’s head?
I’m wondering if they’re starting to recruit them some chruch police to make sure that the commandments are being obeyed by the faithful during their time of special religious insanity recognition. Or if they’ll stay true to form, and try and make everyone who doesn’t believe their pagan superstitions obey them – while ignoring the members of their cult that disobey their own rules. They could always talk to their spiritual brethren enforcing sharia in america’s overseas colony…
It strikes me as a gigantic waste of time for them to be doing these dumbass resolutions, religious or not.

You’re right. We have an economic disaster unfolding and the endless occupation of Iraq flushing lives and dollars down the toilet. Yet our elected officials choose to spend their time with this nonsense! We should be using the introduction of this resolution as an opportunity to point out that the religious right’s support of BushCo is what has brought us to this breaking-point. Who in their right mind would think it appropriate to through the architects of our nightmare a bone at this time. This resolution should be replaced by a repudiation of these religious freaks.
through -> throw
What business is this of the people…what is the cost of pandering….
is pandering?…initiating unnecessary legislation that will not become law and is a waist of the peoples money….just to pacify a voting block that cant wait to get to heaven….
wouldnt it be great if the that particular voting block would just make the leap now and save the rest of us a few bucks….
suck it 10 commandments
NOW do you see why I voted for Nader instead of Lieberman??? SEE???
David
Yeah! That Iraq war was a small price to pay to ensure that we didn’t end up with a lousy VP.
Oh wait…

Absolutely nothing wrong with this idea…

Let us know…
This is what is needed, we really need to confuse the religious majority that government is here to support their twisted view of history and to enable their bigotry. Thanks a lot Leiberman.
/sarcasm off
What a total waste of time, energy and government. Why are these resources not being used to educate the masses about the separation of church and state? We have a majority that are totally ignorant about our country’s origins and how they got the freedom to believe as they wish.
Except that both ideas are a waste of time and money.
Ten Commandments Weekend would be a waste of time and money– and besides only 3 of them apply to modern life and morality: the prohibitions against murder, stealing, and perjury. Recognition of Atheists Weekend would be a great way for me to come out as an Atheist to the 2 godly civic groups I belong to, but at the same time it would be a waste of time and money.
Rusty
I laughed twice as long.
The cheap efficient way to do it is to ignore all religious/non religious groups equally.
But , the christians see this as Atheist propoganda.
so now we have to have a separate resolution for every group in the country. I can live with that, but I’d rather be cheap.
Holy Joe strikes again. Thank you Connecticut voters for going with a true war-monger rather than rational human being.

Since you’re still spouting the crap that the voices in your head are spewing, I’d say not yet. Feel free to keep your religiously insane inner monologues to yourself, phreakshow.
And – suck it, jeebus phreak!
How is it that the Republicans can get away with money wasters like this and still have a reputation for spending less? Ugh.
I have a lot of respect for the smaller government ideals, but I think there are precious few politicians actually interested in it.
Religion does not need the government’s help. The only thing the government should be concerning itself with is protecting the freedom of and from religion. If a religion can’t stand on it’s own two feet then it should be allowed to fail, likewise with atheism.
I sent two paper letters to my senators, which I printed using the link in this article. I urge you all to do the same.
Uh, can anybody say “Establishment Clause”? or “separation of church and state”? Don’t these dimwits get the idea here? We’re not a theocracy, and that should be enough. (Alas, were it that simple…)
I just sent off 2 emails, and i plan on calling later today.
Just a note, I put up a bulletin on my myspace giving people the info and the links straight to my states senator’s email system. That should help the lazy ones….
I have to say, I’m DISGUSTED this would ever come up. Who thinks of this shit?
