PRESS RELEASEFor Immediate Release:The Free Inquiry Group of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, Inc. (FIG) is pleased to announce that the Honorable Mark Mallory, Mayor of the City of Cincinnati, has proclaimed February 12, 2008 as ?DARWIN DAY.?The Proclamation reads as follows:ProclamationCity of Cincinnati —————————————————————————-Be It Proclaimed: WHEREAS, The City of Cincinnati has always been at the forefront of scientific research, medicine, and academia; and WHEREAS, The City will continue to support the sciences at all levels of education; and WHEREAS, many scientific advancements can be traced back to the work of Charles Darwin and his groundbreaking discovery 150 years ago, that living things change over time, or evolve, in response to selective pressure of their environment; and WHEREAS, Darwin’s theory redefined the direction of research and progress, and has since been the cornerstone of the biological sciences that have brought advancement in medicine, agriculture, zoology, paleontology, and conservation, to name a few, to benefit us all; and WHEREAS, Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, and WHEREAS, February 12 is a world-wide Darwin Day Celebration; andNow, Therefore, I, Mark Mallory,Mayor of the City of Cincinnati do hereby proclaimFebruary 12, 2008,as”DARWIN DAY”in Cincinnati. ———————————————————————————————————–John Welte, Sr., President of FIG, who had requested the Proclamation, said he was very gratified to see the City of Cincinnati continue its historic support of science, reason, and free inquiry. ?This is particularly important in light of the fact that there are constant attacks on the evidence of evolution by the ?Creation Museum? here in our area, by educators who want to allow the religious viewpoint called ?Creationism? to be taught in our schools, and even by candidates for the Presidency of the United States. Evolution has been clearly established as one of the most robust of scientific facts,? Welte said.

That’s awesome. Good for them!
Fuck yea.
People that attempt to lead this country out of the dark ages deserve encouragement so I sent him an email complimenting his Darwin Day proclamation.
His contact information is at the bottom of this web page.

Thanks for the contact info, i sent him a note as well.
We should boycott the large chain stores. I was at one today and they simply said “Have a nice day”. The took the Darwin right out of “Darwin Day”. How hard would it have been for them to say “Have a nice Darwin Day”?
Woohoo! At least some good is coming out of this city! I’ve always like Mallory.
The Fundies will be looking for Creation Day just to balance things, after all this is a Xtian nation (right Phreedm?)
Off topic, but this is just too crazy to pass up. Enjoy (or um, not, because really, this is so stupid it’s sickening):

Forrest,
I saw that on RichardDawkins.net. Too funny!
Why aren’t any news reports from http://www.ffrf.org’s billboard signs up on your bog? Because you guys are in competition with FFRF, and failing miserably?
Non profit competition? OoooK. We had a post on that a loong time ago.
Oh, I thought that was a different billboard…the freethoughtaction.org sign.
The FFRF ones are pretty cool too. In both cases they seem to rely on stock theistic imagery though: cloudy sky, stained glass etc. Whatever. I guess if it were outer space or some sciencey bullshit it would just be ‘preaching’ to the ‘choir’
Y’all are so wrong…it is Lincoln’s birthday…also born on Feb. 12, 1809, same day & year as Darwin…LOL!!
If I even mention Darwin in the public school where I teach (elementary), in Paltryville, TX (pop. 567 and three depressed chipmunks), I’d be hauled in front of the school board…
Sooooo, it is LINCOLN’S birthday at my elementary school…LMAO!!!
Happy Lincoln/Darwin Day!
Great to hear, I live 10 miles from Cincinnati, and I’m glad to the mayor is so fond of evolution. Also it’s very surprising there’s no protesting with this too since there’s some religious fanatics that live here in Northern Kentucky, land of the freak-show known as the “Creation Museum”. But Darwin should be celebrated as he started probably one of the biggest steps in science as well as one of the biggest steps against dogma. Also, yes, Kentucky was also celebrating Lincoln’s birthday today as well.
Too bad the weather here was horrible today with snow and ice rain. So my “Darwin Day”/Lincon’s birthday was rather boring so I didn’t want to go anywhere due to ice.
Barbiebrains
these are small children and i would think most citizens prefer that evolution be taught at the high school level.i am confident that you are a wonderful teacher an will prepare your students well for their further education.
reason,
What do you consider to be wrong with teaching small children about evolution, it is a fact, evolution happened and is happening, there is no doubt.
reason: “these are small children and i would think most citizens prefer that evolution be taught at the high school level.”
I never heard anything more horrible. Can a person be too young to learn about science?
Barbiebrains: “If I even mention Darwin in the public school where I teach (elementary), in Paltryville, TX (pop. 567 and three depressed chipmunks), I’d be hauled in front of the school board…”
That would be a good opportunity to give the uneducated hicks of your school board a science lesson. Of course that’s easy for me to say. My job is not at stake. But I suggest if anyone can do something about the breathtaking stupidity of Americans, it’s the teachers.
The teaching of evolution should begin in Kindergarten, and parents who aren’t idiots can teach their children about evolution before kindergarten. Young people have the right to know what they are and who their ancestors are. Nothing is more interesting than science. It’s extremely crazy to keep science a secret from young people.
I’m looking forward to 2/12/2009, the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth. I predict massive ridicule of creationist subhumans and a lot of free science education. It will be a major event throughout the world.

OK…Let’s see the bomb thrower ride to the defense of this pastor…

Come on Pete…let’s see you explain this one?
Oh no ,not again…
Fighting relgious idiots is just like shooting zombies …. their unintellectual arguments just keep coming even though they’ve already been shot down in about twenty different ways. I’m surrounded by these unintellectual morons, and sometimes the altruistic stupidity gets into my head and tries to eat my brains out but I don’t let it. I think I’m going to have to control the local mother zombie (Pastor Dumbass) and then the whole structure will gradually change for my benefit.
“Fighting religious idiots is just like shooting zombies …. their unintellectual arguments just keep coming even though they’ve already been shot down in about twenty different ways.”
If I remember correctly, according the movie The Night of the Living Dead, zombies can be eradicated by shooting them in the head. It’s not legal to shoot religious idiots in the head, but there’s still a solution to the god problem. It’s science education. It’s too late to educate the god-soaked hicks who don’t go to school anymore, but if we keep improving science education, despite the efforts of the christian morons who constantly attack science education, eventually people will figure out it’s not necessary to invoke the magic man for anything.
Take Note: The only ongoing education the local hicks get is from Pastor Dumass, who prides himself in bamboozling these folks in their local churches with nice or scary words. They’ll say whatever gets the most money in the donation plate.
I sent my Mayor of Round Rock Texas the letter from Mayor Mallory and asked if he’d do the same…no response from Mayor Nyle Maxwell.
Anybody who is interested in hearing what the presidential candidates have to say about science policy should probably go here and add their name to the list. I’m sure Darwin would have signed.

So BobC,
Since you’re so interested in education…
You answer. If a child is stuck in a failing inner city school, would you support that child going to a private school for a better education? Even if it had religious roots?
Or would the myth be more important to you then the childs education…?
I would donate money to the public school so the child would do better, instead of sending it to be brainwashed, you idiot.
Anadrol,
Great idea. The ones against science will stick out like a sore thumb.

Has the religiously insane phreakshow that comments here ever done anything but drag comments threads off topic?
It is amusing to see someone who continues to ask questions, continues to refuse to answer them when they’re directed to it, and then gets righteously indignant when rational minds at this site choose not to play his games.

Happy Darwin Day, Cincy. Maybe you can get rid of Relgiously Insane Mean Jean Schmidt for us while you’re in the reality-based mood?
(: tom
I pray every night for Gawd to strike down Jean Schmidt but he never listens to me!
Has this fine Mayor had his life threatened yet by loving xians?
Here is a book on Darwin for kids…the biography section of my school’s library does not have ONE book on Darwin…Kids read about famous scientists all the time. Do I really need to wonder WHY Darwin’s life is excluded from the K-5 library in the Baptist town where I teach????

Phreedm, I would support vouchers if private schools were held to the same regulations as public schools…open to ALL children with the same protections under the law…The parents might want their kid to learn the three R’s but not the Bible…If a Muslim child wants to attend a Xian school with vouchers, the Xian school must accomodate her beliefs. Xian schools accepting vouchers would be regulated by the State and Federal gov’t.
LESSON:
Jimmy Carter screamed about Castro’s human rights abuses. Castro emptied his insane asylums and gave criminals freedom in America…the Marielitos…Careful with what you wish for…
