John McCain’s Christian Right offensive yields another endorsement, from Tom Coburn, poster child for old school Christian conservatism in the U.S. Senate. Another reminder that the fight for Palmetto State evangelicals isn’t limited to Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson.
http://blog.beliefnet.com/godometer/2008/01/another-christian-conservative.htmlI love the God-O-Meter, but I really hate that McCain has turned out to be a McBush. I still remember him in 2000 trying to convince everyone that he really wanted Bush to win, coming out in a press conference just to say “no really, I really do endorse Governor Bush. No Really”.And now “Mr. National Hero” has turned into another religious nut job, courting the Christians, just the Christians, and ONLY the Christians — after all, we’re a Christian nation based on Christianity as set forth in the Constitution.

Quantum_flux,
There’s a message in prose. The only justifiable reason for war is self-defense.
Old school Metallica.
Horus
That’s pretty funny, considering the last seven years.
You paleocons need to update your rhetoric. It hasn’t been valid since the Bee Gees were on the charts.
McCain’s a lying two-faced politician?
Show me one that isn’t!
Not that I intend to vote for him (although who in the hell I will vote for is a mystery since all of them are lying two-faced politicans),give McCain some credit. He is, without question, a true American hero and I doubt there are any of us who could endure the torture he endured during his time as a POW. I will say right here that I don’t have it in me and I’m darned sure of that fact.
And, for all his faults, he has had the courage to take unpopular stands a number of times when it didn’t further his career which is more than I can say about the rest of the would-be nominees.
So give let’s him a break, why don’t we.
Ron Paul.
Being captured and tortured does not make somebody a hero and it certainly does not make them fit for public office. This man is so unstable that he thought it was funny to parody the Beach Boys tune “Barbara Anne” by singing “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran” for our media. This is a man that flippantly says that he and the american people do not care if we are in Iraq for a hundred years. This is classic case of the abused becoming the abuser.
When somebody tells you who they are, and it’s not good, you should believe them.
If in bizzaro world our presidential candidates in Nov 2008 were Ron Paul and John McCain I would vote for Paul in a heart beat and you, or at least Atomic, know what I think about Paul. Paul should commit to running as a third party candidate now. What fun it would be to watch the war-mongering-spend-spend-spend rethuglicans then!
atomic,
ATOMIC for President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am gonna geek out and go way off topic:
On NPR they are discussing that the AIR Force has changed their story and have now admitted they sent 16 fighter jets out in response to the UFO spotted over stephenville, tx.
For many days after the town reported spotting the ufo and two military jets giving pursuit the Air Force denied ANY of their planes were in the area.
Now do to so many eye witness accounts they has reversed their story and admitted they indeed sent out jets.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My moniker would certainly be a terrible name to run under.
The reality of it is that it was the first thing that popped into my head and it seemed… controversial.
Perhaps it was the AA atom that inspired me for the “atomic” part (I honestly don’t remember), but the “testing” part refers to the testing of boundaries. I like to push people to think beyond their comfort zone – even if it is anathema to said person.
Here is a story in the NYT:
http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/24/f-16s-at-the-scene-of-ufo-sighting-in-texas/?hp
This story says the air force admitted to 10 fighter jets, not 16.
From my own experience, I lived in lower manhattan during 9/11 and afterwards fighter jets flew over the area non-stop for weeks. They are loud and they are obvious and I would say it would be near impossible to mistake them for anything other than military jets.
LOL The Atomic President!
Now that name would certainly deter our enemies!
That would make his acolytes’ heads explode. They still think he’s going to be the Repub nominee.
Anybody else getting the “Certified Christian” dating service ad at the bottom of the page? That young lady does not appear to be having decent, moral thoughts.
Just go vote for Hillary people! Nothing makes the fundies more angry than seeing a woman in power. What did the Huckster say about it? They should bow to the servant leadership of the man? Yeah, that was it, right before he said they were equal. Let’s see here, bow…. equal….. hmmmm….
If I may address this with an anecdote? While delivering speech therapy services to a little girl on my caseload last week, her father made a curious remark. I’ve known this family for 8 years now and had served all three of their girls. I like these folks, they’re a good family.
While playing with their daughter, I noticed an interesting picture on their screensaver.
I said, “Is that a lunar eclipse?”
Father, “No, it looks like the horns of satan rising over a church.”
Well, I didn’t even notice the church. Whatever. Then he went into an “I’m a persecuted xian” diatribe. Mind you, I’m there to serve their daughter, not to debate their god delusion (PS, I still like them).
Then dad said, “This IS a xian nation! God is mentioned in the constitution at least 40 times!”
I said nothing, but it fueled my curiosity. I hadn’t read the constitution since high school, and who cares about the constitution when you’re a teen? It was homework-yuck!
Anyway, I went home and read it. Only one mention of gawd in article 7, “In the year of our lord…” (ellipsis required).
I was stunned that a family I thought were relatively intelligent were so gullible. I’m sure somebody told dad the lie and he didn’t research it himself; he simply regurgitated the lie.
Now I’m torn. Should I confront dad? Should I take a copy of the constitution? Should I risk my job? Should I endure thier foolishness in silence?
So many questions…
Metallica rules.
Pha,
I don’t think you would have been in the wrong to point out to Dad, at the time you were discussing it, that the Constitution does not mention God (tell Ron Paul, too). Doing so a few days later might be making too big a deal of it. He’s probably not going to change his other opinions.
cry4,
I would just leave them to their delusions. I would bet money the dad would react with anger. Xians don’t like to process information that contradicts their preconceived god ideas.
I mean the screensaver alone suggests this guy is a radical and to claim persecution? Gotta love the martyr complex.
cry4turtles
If you think the dad respects you then you could simply say “Did you know that I’m not a xian?” in response to his “This IS a xian nation!”. If you doubt that he respects you then I would just let him continue to remove all doubt about his ignorance.
cry4turtles,
I think I would take him a full copy of the constitution, including all amendments, with the one reference to “our lord” highlighted, and ask him if he would mind pointing out the other 39 odd references contained therin.
I mean, WTF, he has already berated you and demeaned your intelligence. Why not return the favor? If your employment would be put in jepordy, then never mind. Otherwise, that would be just the thing to shut him up. Proof, in black and white.
You don’t have to be an ass about it, (like I would be) You could pretend to be genuinely curious about the subject and ask for his assistance in finding all those godly references. If he balks or gets angry, he isn’t worth your time anyhow.
Good luck!
cry4turtles
I think I’d let this slide, unless the guy brings it up himself again at another time. If you bring it up to him, it may seem more confrontational. But if you wait until he says something again – and he probably will- then you’re just participating in a new conversation he started. I’d be as matter-of-fact with the correct information about the Constitution as possible.
I’m having trouble picturing “the horn of Satan rising over a church” resembling a lunar eclipse! I notice he didn’t really explain what it was, just what it looked like, and that it wasn’t an eclipse.
Anyway, like you said, you’re there for their daughter, so keep that in mind. When you encounter ignorance, count to ten, take a deep breath, and remember why you’re there.
Sorry Cry4Turtles, I accidentally addressed you as “Pha.” Eyes getting worse in my old age.
Thanks for the advice, friends.
Excellent advice for ua all!

Scott Adams for president!
Obama is scary religious ! Check out his campaign web site, the “Obama on Faith” page. He admits he’s friends with scammy televangelists and you can tell by his statements that faith based initiatives will not only survive, they’ll flourish !
http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/ObamaonFaith.pdf
I see that Obama is a 9 on the God-o-meter. I’d put him at a 10 with his statements and his connection to the Trinity Church.
