DES MOINES, Iowa (Jan. 3) – Sen. Barack Obama swept to victory in the Iowa caucuses Thursday night, pushing Hillary Rodham Clinton to third place and taking a major stride in a historic bid to become the nation’s first black president. Mike Huckabee rode a wave of support from evangelical Christians to win the opening round among Republicans in the 2008 campaign for the White House.Obama, 46 and a first-term senator from Illinois, scored his victory on a message of change in Washington. Nearly complete returns showed him gaining 37 percent support from Iowans. Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina appeared headed for second place, relegating Clinton, the former first lady, to a close third
Huckabee “doesn’t believe in evolution”. “God did it” is in his view, a valid scientific theory. Does this fact alone make him too dumb to be president? YES!

JCC
Give us your operational definition of the word “god”. Then give us your definition of the word “exist”. And then tells us how one can make any sense of the question “Do gods exist?”.
What
your wasting your time on JCC.now last night Ren and i started to talk about sex ed.i take the view teach what the laws are that relate to sex not how to use birth control.leave that up to doctors, drug stores.with teen brains in a state of development it may not be possible to devise an effective policy for them.what is you take on this.
reason,
When do you suppose people learn about birth control if not in school? After they are adults and have VD and 3 children, they should learn about it by reading the package of their BC of choice?
My mother mentioned recently that she learned most of what she knows about the reproductive system from her children, because she was never taught that stuff in school. Is that what you want? Ignorant adults, because they were never taught how to protect themselves?
One needs only look at the abstinence education only curriculum in conjunction with teen pregnancy and VD rates, to see that, “just say no” doesn’t work.
It is absolutly appropriate to preach abstinance while teaching biologically sound sex ed. The two are not mutually exclusive of each other. What do you say to the virgin that gets venerial warts on their wedding night from their spouse that’s been around the block a few times prior to marriage?

In your comment to JCC
My opinion on sex ed boils down to this: teenagers are going to make stupid choices anyway, might as well give them the best possible tools to protect themselves while being stupid. If you’re afraid your kid’s going to hurt himself on a skate-board, you buy him a helmet.
Ren and Rna2dna
Well my wife have talked about this and we are going to teach our son and daughter early (before puberty) everything they need to know about safe sex.
I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that impulsiveness is the hallmark of the 13-18 year old mind. It is our intention to educate our children with respect to protecting themselves sexually well before they get into the impulsive years. It may be too late by then.
Now with respect to public policy the “Just say No” stuff is entirely noneffective as a public policy. I think that kids should be taught both the law and how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and STD. I would hope that an effective means of teaching kids about the emotional consequences of early sexual activity could be developed but that may be too much to ask of our school systems.
I don’t think we would need the school systems involvement at all if it weren’t for bad parenting – the kind of parenting practiced by the extremely naive don’t-talk-about-and-it-wont-happen
parents.
Huckabee “doesn’t believe in evolution”. “God did it” is in his view, a valid scientific theory. Does this fact alone make him too dumb to be president? YES!
Agreed. He’s not qualified to be president because he’s dumber than an average child. He doesn’t even know humans are primates.
Another person who thinks an invisible man in the clouds made people out of nothing is our current president. He is also not qualified to be president of anything but somehow he got elected anyway. Now Huckabee wins in Iowa. Are Americans idiots? The obvious answer is yes, America has the dumbest population of the Western world.
Somebody said “In fact, it?s quite clear in the Bible that Jesus? conception was miraculous”
Who cares what the bible says? Everyone knows that’s horse shit unless somebody is stupid enough to believe god fucked mary.
Somebody else said “It’s quite clear in the Harry Potter series that little boys and girls can fly on broomsticks.”
That’s fiction, but more likely than any jesus miracle. A person’s sanity can be measured by what he thinks about jesus. The more a person believes jesus is a big fucking deal, the more insane he is.
jcc,
What is so sad is you fail to realize how ugly you really are. There is plenty I do not know about life, but YOU are the one claiming you do know regardless of the evidence presented to you. You actually claim omnipotence, the ability to know scientific studies are wrong with no knowledge or expertise on a subject.
A magical being did not make 2 adult versions of every species spontaneously appear and I don’t just say that because it’s impossible I say that because if it happened that way there actually would be EVIDENCE of that in the fossil record.
But the difference between you and me is that if they discovered real evidence of something like that I would accept it and I would change my thinking based upon it, whereas you spend your life in denial of so much wonderful knowledge it really has made your entire existence meaningless.
Why live if you can’t learn? You can’t see the greatness of your fellow man’s mind and accomplishments. When doctors and scientists save a person from certain death do you thank them? No you give credit to magic. Do you get to enjoy the limitless possibilities the cracking of the genome will bring?
You can’t SEE.
I learn more in a week than you have in your whole lifetime. I know more than you because knowledge MEANS something to me. As human animals the ability to THINK and REASON is what elevates us above being just a dumb animal. So where does that leave someone like you on the evolutionary scale?
I will share a theory of my own which I normally would not do, because I, like you, have no evidence.
If one could see with “fourth dimensional eyes” they would realize the sun is the core of the earth.
There is more to my theory, but I wanted to give you an example to demonstrate how one should deal with such unverifiable information.
It would be CRAZY for me to insist this were true, when in fact it may not be. I enjoy thinking about it but I would never reject scientific studies if it went against my theory.
You keep such beliefs to yourself because they are, in fact, private. I would argue they are the only real wealth a person has. I share with you because you need to understand what you are doing to yourself when you throw your most personal theories into the world. You turn totally negative and defensive, it makes you try to convince others how right you are at the expense of their well being. Think of what you guys do to your children’s mind and potential. You can’t be the next Einstein if you don’t believe in science. How many great minds we have lost *sigh*
This is how religion was formed and cults are made, from fear and the need to self validate at everyone’s expense.
Your god beliefs are unprovable and imo wrong as is every other organized religion, but if this is what you have chosen to believe you should keep something so important to you private.
Look at how you spend your time…
Anyway, I wish there were smart pills you could take or your magic god could actually help you out and free your mind, but in the end you shouldn’t be coming here if you are just wanting to argue the unprovable. It will only make you unhappy.
Let those who will, see.
I know my above post was super long but I wanted to add a little more to the following:
When someone dismisses the collective thinking & expertise of our best minds and claim they KNOW the results are false based on a belief in magic that person is implying knowledge and science are irrelevant to life. All one needs is a belief in THEIR god idea to know science. Studying and research are meaningless.
Now imagine what the world would be if everyone had refused to study anything that opposed religious ideas.
Knowledge is kryptonite to these people and yet they are the first one’s in line to suckle at the teat of scientific breakthroughs.
We would have nothing without these scientists and I mean nothing. The world would be horrible if all we had were fantastical magic beliefs, as history itself shows.
The xians who come here and deny science don’t realize the correlation between themselves and those who burned people alive for daring to proclaim something counter to religion. This is what an inflexible belief will make people do and it IS what they would do if they still could, deny it though they might.
Today they can’t go around killing people so instead they fund bogus think tanks whose sole mission is to discredit science. It still goes on today just ask an evolutionary biologist or a geneticist studying stem cells.
Related to our particular discussion on embryonic gill slits that jcc denies even though it is validated by every reputable scientific source, he says NO, science is wrong, the slits form jaws. Really? You don’t think scientists studied that? You don’t think scientists have dissected embryos in every stage of development, taken film and photos? Had their findings reviewed repeatedly? Do you honestly believe they don’t know how jaws form and that is is unrelated to the slits?
Imagine where would would be today if these deniers never existed.
jcc asked twice:
The following I cut from THIS THREAD ALONE:
I have admittedly returned venom with full fire-power and I don’t deny it nor am I sorry. Once again jcc proves what a liar he is.
From Websters:
Still wanna pretend you haven’t insulted me?
This is actually hilarious. I didn’t go far enough back to the top of the thread to cut the rest of the insults jcc made:
LMAO
jcc, it is you who insults people. You insult their intelligence by talking about miracles.
You said, “I still have the prerogative to disagree with their conclusions” and to be a dumber than Bush jesus freak and believe in things for which there is no evidence.
Yes, you have the prerogative to be stupid. In fact, I wonder if you even know what the word means.
In reference to this statement by JCc:
JCc writes this:
As noted in a previous comment the top statement was proposed by an opponent (christian?) of evolution. However, “I used to teach it as “fact” to young skulls full of mush” doesn’t make much sense, but I guess the “mush” was the result of JCc doing the teaching.
Now JCc, your god-idea can sell your house, however, it can’t tell you that what you were teaching is wrong, how can that be?
I will agree that similarity in structure and/or function does not necessarily imply similarity in genetic information or lineage. However, like in computer programming, similarity in the codons indicates that all organisms are derived from the same base. It is possible for multiple independent formations of replicating structures using the same base codons, but such an argument is hardly for creation or against evolution. Common descent is accepted because the evidence indicates it is so, not because evolution necessitates it to be so (it doesn’t).
Ok, this is better then a soap opera but I give it a shot. ( I also realize this has been a couple of posts ago on the topic)
This whole sex ed thing, I would perfer my children to have the ability to make the right choice by being educated about sex. Teenagers are going to have sex whether you like it or not. The will figure out a way with you in the next room. Educate them on what happens if you have unprotected sex. My parents, Gott fearing Christians they were, didnt teach me anything other then the shame involved with sex. I learned what I needed to know from friends and school. I have no probelm talking to my children about sex but hopefully they will make the right choices. Educate the children.
My father insisted Atheists are morally bankrupt. Naturally, I decided to figure out what was ‘morally bankrupt’ about engaging in sex. My conclusions? Sex is about gratification and a waste of my time and effort. Now he claims I can’t possibly be a ‘true’ Atheist and, therefore, there’s still hope for my ‘soul’. Like I’ve said before, Dad can be foolish.
KIP,
What else can I say but that I sure feel sorry for you.
As is you perogative
. I’d just like to point out that, with very few exceptions, I’m not a very sociable person. If there’s anything about me which is worth feeling sorry about, its that I can’t control my emotions well enough to actually develope a meaningful relationship. That’s my contention. Sex without the underlying relationship is meaningless to me.
KIP,
See, that’s a whole different proposition. One that I agree with!
I’m just not interested in one night stands.
Well, regardless, my original point was that many ‘fundamental’ religious groups feel that when there is an Atheist who’s moral, its only because he’s not a ‘true’ Atheist. What makes them think they’re not imitating me?
