I like explaining to Christians and others that the "Golden rule" is axiomatically flawed from the get go, especially if your suicidal. As (Yip) Harberg (1896-1981) wrote: Love thy neighbor as thy self, keep that motto on the shelf, let it lie there, keep it idle, especially if you're suicidal. I like the platinum rule that Atheist Michael Scott Earl advocated in his Bible Stories Your Parent Never Taught You. Do unto others as they would have done unto themselves. Axiomatically it just makes more sense.

I don?t see why the reporter interviewed clergy on this. It comes down to why I?m a liberal that thinks taxes should be severely raised on the top 5%. The greed for companies to make 15-20% return for their top investors/stock holders. It?s why I think Wall Street is the devil. Pray all you want for your mortgage but with this many people getting bit by this problem it seems more than buyer beware, it?s seems like purely unethical sales techniques by lenders as demanded on them by senior management.

I just bet they're "praying for wisdom." Ha! They're praying for one of the magic man's miracles in the form of green-backs.

I feel pity for the children of people who lined up for loans on houses they knew they couldn't afford, but none for the parents.

And I'm wondering when the clergy is going to get around to all the other so-called abuses? How about credit card d*ebt. Thousands have used the plastic knowing they were digging deep holes for themselves. And then there are car loans. How many people - good xians included - are driving vehicles they shouldn't be driving, but just had to have?!!

Damn those lenders! None of this is the fault of the idiot who signed on the dotted line!!!

"That's the Golden Rule. But I bet there's not 1 in 100 that did. If more of them just thought about that for a minute, it would have prevented a lot of this."

Actually, the more applicable question would be "would you offer this loan to youself?" I would. I wouldn't sign it, but on the off chance I was stupid enough to accept my offer, I would offer myself the loan. Problem solved.

Bullshit. Everyone is legally forced to read the disclosure forms & understand them. You have to sign to this. If they didn't, it is their own dumb ass fault.

There are already safeguards in place for predatory lending.

ARMs were another way for debt ridden Joe 6 Pack to keep living outside of his means. And he got bit in the ass. The market prevailed, bankruptcy will straighten him out & the billion $ losses on Wall St have straightened out the lenders.

The problem has been solved.

No, TXatheist, I wasn't aiming at you or commenting on your post.

I simply believe everyone has to take responsibility for themselves. The world we live in is, after all, the world we live in. Certainly there are many wrongs which could be righted, but probably most of them won't be fixed, so if a person who cannot afford something, but just can't live without it anyway, and has the means of getting it--whether it be a house or a car or anything his/her credit card will allow, then if they don't look ahead and allow for the unexpected (which usually happens), then there will be consequences to pay. So all I'm talking is that regardless of the wrongs in the world, everybody needs to take personal responsibility and quit blaming the system or anybody else.

I also don't buy into the crap that it takes two incomes to live these days. We've become a nation where way too many of us feel we all should live like kings. I'm probably older than many on this blog so let me give you the "When I was a kid I had to walk five miles to school every day and both ways were uphill" speech.

Back when families lived on one income houses on average were considerably smaller, kids shared rooms (sometimes as many as four to a room), there was one bathroom in the house, no family room (we listened to the radio or watched tv in the living room, horror of horrors!,one radio, later one tv, and if a family was lucky, a car - only one - in the driveway. Of course, we all had fewer clothes and less of pretty much everything. There was a big bonus to this though: people appreciated things far more than now that we live in a throw-away-I'll-just-get-a-new-one-tomorrow world.
