One would expect that there would be more sexual abuse from school employees than from priests.
Almost ALL children attend public school – from age 5 to 18. Only 1/3 of Americans attend church on a regular basis, and Catholics are a minority religion. There are a LOT of school employees, and only one priest per church.
Regardless, sexual abuse of ANY child in ANY setting is unacceptable and criminal and should be punished to the full extent of the law.
I say this with the authority of experience. I was sexually abused as a child – by my father. Most children are abused by a family member or close family friend.
My point here is that it does not really matter where the abuse happens. What matters is that we try to prevent it, or failing that, we punish the perpetrators and NOT let the abuse get covered up, and NOT let the abuser move on to another church or job where he can abuse again!
