Ms. Johnson will be discussing the American Atheists legal suit against the placement of enormous Christian crosses on government property, ostensibly to honor the memories and sacrifices of fallen members of the Utah Highway Patrol. American Atheists filed suit in 2005 arguing that the 12-foot-high Christian crosses violate the separation of church and state. A U.S. District Court Judge heard arguments Tuesday in the case, and promised a decision soon. Brian Barnard, attorney for American Atheists, has called for the removal of the crosses and the construction of an appropriate secular memorial to honor the troopers.
