Wow! He went from being a piece of plastic in my drain (forcing me to miss a program about ID because he’s planning to strike me down with lightning before Friday) to being a piece of funny performance art.

I now get the awe part. I’m waiting for the shock still.

My aunt in Wales sent me this same YMCA jesus pic in an email earlier today so I’m guessing that it just hit the internet and is quickly moving around the world. Too funny!

Yay, Phreedm! God is directing almost all of the precipitation away from Georgia and toward the northeast.

He’s the compassionate sort to give a little sprinkle when he could send a flood. Noah got one, why can’t they?

    God is directing

Well…at least we have an admission here…

Well, I didn’t say what he was directing with which, of course, is his noodly appendage.

    Ramen!

Why is god always smiting the pious Southern states with hurricanes and droughts but skips over dens of sin like Las V_egas or the ultra secular Portland, OR?

    Alex,

He already smote them. He surrounded them with xians.

This is an extremely well-done video that shows the obviousness of macro evolution (which I think is a silly distinction from “micro” evolution anyway) in a way that’s really hard to deny. I’m glad they have added it in the last day or so.

So, Phreaky, looking at the arranged petri dishes of specimins of the exact same species of salamander on parts of a map of California they are collected from, how can you choose to not see evolution taking place? What do you think you see? It seems pretty clear that mutants of the same species have become adapted to their environment in ways that make the most sense. The best example, to me, was the bright red salamander that appears to be poisonous and survives because of its remarkable resemblance to actual poisonous newts that live in the area. Obviously humans are born with differences in skin coloration – which (according to your side of things) would have to be mere coincidence. A convenient coincidence it must be indeed that in the precise locales where dark skin color protects us from the most sun exposure (at and around the equator) it is prevalent. I wonder how often albinos are born near the equator and how long they survive. My guess: not often, and not long.

As for my earlier statement: the reason I believe that it’s silly to try and make a distinction between macro and micro evolution is that they’re essentially the same thing if you look at one simple fact.

Even the most complex multicellular organisms get their start from one cell. In humans – two haploid cells (sperm and egg) get together, pair off chromosomes and become one and only one cell. An asexually reproducing bacterium or a sexually reproducing paramecium also begin from one cell. The theory of abiogenesis (which is the actual theory the xians are most concerned about, and not the theory of evolution) is that everything got its start from one cell (from a non-living source i.e. no “parent”). Everything still gets its start from one cell.

Ha! I Googled the words “albino” and “equator” and the first reference that came up was this:

    http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract/112682451/ABSTRACT?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0

The number of cases they studied is statistically pretty small (350 people compared to a planetwide population of billions). It appears that my guess about their survivability in those regions is, indeed, not high.

    It says in the abstract:

…by 20 years, the skin of every subject demonstrated subclinical malignant change, and some had clinical epitheliomas. Untreated, the latter tumors become intractable and disseminate, usually causing death in the third or fourth decade of life.

Now, of course Phreeky will probably be thinking (or trying to approximate the act as best he can) “but they lived long enough to produce offspring if they lived 30-40 years.” Further on we read:

The predominant site of advanced cancers in the study group was the head and neck region (30 patients); the other three occurred on the trunk, which is generally covered by clothes.

Even in your favorite ridiculous fairy-tale the characters “Adam and Eve” had a go at it in the nude and clothing had not yet been conceived.

Near the equator humans have little need for clothing – our ancestors were hairy and that did a pretty good job on its own protecting the skin from solar damage and the cancers and subsequent death it causes. Afterward dark skin pigmentation has always been selected for – if these albinos didn’t have shelter or clothing how long would they live?

Of course, in the Bible, there is no mention of Adam and Eve’s skin color. There is also no mention of where, precisely, the garden of Eden was located. Seeing as the two inhabitants initially started out naked we can presume that it was at least a warm climate. If it was too cold or too hot they’d have died. That wouldn’t have made God a terribly good designer, now would it? Since the bible doesn’t bother to mention these details, we can only assume that Adam and Eve probably had the same skin color (that whole “in his own image” bit and the cloning of females from the cells of the male rib suggest that conclusion – or the alternate creation story in the bible that says they were both made from clay). If this is the case, why do we have so many people with dark skin in climates where dark skin prolong lives, and so many people with lighter skin living in climates where that protection isn’t necessary?

    Let’s see how many claim you’re hijacking a thread…

I guess I should feel privileged that I’m the only one that receives that honor…

    But to your question…

So, Phreaky, looking at the arranged petri dishes of specimins of the exact same species of salamander on parts of a map of California they are collected from, how can you choose to not see evolution taking place?

    Simple…it’s still a salamander…

It’s fascinating how you can believe I see more then there is within the bible…and yet you can look at this video and see more then there is within it…

    Not very consistent thinking…

    Let’s see how many claim you’re hijacking a thread…

Look at the topic of this thread. What’s to hijack? We visited, we laughed, we returned, we joked.

    Simple…it’s still a salamander…

And when science shows that after tracking the subspecies of salamanders long enough that they become separate species of their own? What then?

I find it difficult to believe that you cannot see that one species of salamander has had enough genetic drift as it migrated across California to take on several distinct colorations for camouflage. I find it more likely that you simply didn’t watch the video because you knew you would not like what you saw, or you watched it but you closed your eyes, covered your ears and said “la la la la, I’m not listening, la la la la!”

How many times can Phreeky move the goal posts? Just scroll by his posts – it’s easy. He has no intention of arguing logically or rationally.

Even if it does little to sway him, I suspect we have a lot of lurkers. If some of them aren’t quite sure about atheism or evolution then spreading information can only help.

That would make it less than zero, or a negative value.
I can accept that. It works to convince me that there really is nothing to this myth. Just some people in it for the money, as usual.

How do we know that it isn’t some other couple, like Brangelina?

You want OT? I’ll give you OT. Saudi Arabian courts have just increased the sentence for a rape victim to 200 lashes along with 6 months in jail. The original sentence was 90 lashes for being alone in a car with an unrelated male. She earned the increase by appealing the leniency of the sentences given to her rapists. The courts didn’t like the publicity associated with her appeal.

Man, those Abrahamic types sure know how to treat a woman ill. They read about it in books, I understand.
