GOVERNOR SONNY PURDUE “PRAY FOR RAIN” FESTAmerican Atheists President Ellen Johnson will be the guest tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007) on the CNN program “Out in the Open” hosted by Rick Sanchez. Her segment will air beginning at approximately 8:00 PM. Check local listings.Ms. Johnson will be discussing today’s unconstitutional “pray for rain” vigil organized by Georgia Gov. Sonny Purdue held on the steps of the state capitol building. The “interfaith” prayer service invited clergy and public to implore a deity to send rain to the drought-ridden state. Two-dozen members of the Atlanta Freethought Society, though, had enough of this unconstitutional foolishness, and organized a picket. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, signs read “Hail Priest-King Perdue” and “Pray on the Church Steps, not the Capitol Steps.”Remember, tonight is also the airing of the PBS NOVA special on the Dover “intelligent design” trial, so turn on your Tivo so you can see both programs!WHO & WHAT: American Atheists President Ellen Johnson on CNN, “Out in the Open” show with Rick Sanchez — discussing today’s unconstitutional prayer rally in Georgia.WHEN: TONIGHT, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 beginning at approximately 8:00 PM. Will Gov. Perdue be sacrificing a goat, as well? You can’t be too careful.
You can send him a message here:

I sent him a note yesterday and mentioned a goat. I also stated that he was an embarrassment to the South.
Yeah, but he did what he could for the Confederate flag, didn’t he? Yee-ha!
Not that I can talk. I live in Mississippi, the last state that still features the Confederate flag on its state flag.
I just saw Ellen Johnson on CNN. I hate to say it but she missed the mark. She went on and on about how crazy religious people are without driving home the bigger point, the use the Senate steps as a pulpit. That was offensive, that’s what she should of keyed in on. When Rick Sanchez wondered if we were trying to take away his right to pray with his family in his own home instead of saying “Absolutely not, this is different and this is why”. She kept going with the conjuring spirits schtick. ARRRGHHH! I was looking forward to this because making Sanchez look dumb isn’t that hard. I might be alone in my disapointment but to me, the most important point was to stress the importance of the Separation of church and State. Ridiculing their idiocy (while I admit is fun) was not the time, place or audience for that rhetoric. Too bad, we don’t get many chances to be heard on major networks. I see this as a missed chance.
We have freedom of thought in this country. Why can’t people just let others pray? Just because we don’t agree with them doesn’t mean we should force them to think like we do. If the prayer was not STATE SPONSORED then it is not unconstitutional!
Who said they can’t pray, Jimmy? Who said they should be forced to think like we do?
Oh yeah – nobody did.
Jimmy,
Where did you get the idea that American Atheists is trying to force people to stop praying?
Whoever told you that is lying. If you came to that conclusion yourself, then you aren’t paying enough attention.
Explain to me how something that is organized by a government body, using government funding is “not state sponsored.”
Jimmy, put down that crack pipe.
Congratuations to Ellen Johnson!
Ten thousand atheists have just gone back in the closet.
Wow. If an organization could drive it’s members under ground with one poorly chosen phrase then there would exist no churches at all on planet earth. Earth to hrichardpeto …
Holy shit, it just started raining at my house which is half a mile from Lake Lanier (Atlanta’s supply of drinking water)
It only lasted two minutes – but my guess is that Sonny Perdue will call that a gift from one of the gods called upon at the inter-faith vigil yesterday.
Perhaps mr purdue checked the weather forecast, which was callling for rain in northern GA, before planning the exact day to have his little god begging debacle. These xians lie and manipulate to support their cause.
“Let us all join with the brethren in Georga and repent of our wicked ways; we have done evil in the face of our great God! We need to humble ourselves, and seek His mercy! He is a most loving and merciful God!”
That was from a christian on a christian blog in a thread about the georgia governor who thinks he’s a preacher.
The USA is not a country. It’s an insane asylum.
Well in the week since the infamous prayer vigil there has been about 15 minutes of rain here in North Georgia. I wonder if that counts as a success?
BobC, can you tell us which xian blog you found your quote on? I’m in need of some comedic relief.
