This is one issue where my normally libertarian ideals are suspended. Mandatory vaccinations against serious disease is not in violation of anyone's rights. It is, however, in violation of everyone's rights to choose not to.

I don't believe there even should be a religious exemption allowing someone to opt out of vaccination.

Which side do you suggest we take, Dave? Is this issue really about atheists? The loophole was clearly put in for irrational people (remember, disease is punishment from God!), but does that mean atheists should be able to abuse it because some of them are also irrational?

Grant,

There is a small and paranoid group that believe there is a link between autism and vaccination.

Here's what the CDC has to say about it:

The weight of currently available scientific evidence does not support the hypothesis that vaccines cause autism. We recognize there is considerable public interest in this issue, and therefore support additional research regarding this hypothesis. CDC is committed to maintaining the safest, most effective vaccine supply in history.

Death by Religious Exemption

Probably should be added to the links on this blog. When the crazy fuckers say their religion doesn't hurt anyone, there's clear proof.

Atomic

Mandatory vaccination is a scarey thing even for people such as myself and my wife who are well informed with respect to the medical issues of vaccination. It is especially scarey in the days of deregulation and ineffective oversight by the FDA with respect to the pharm industry. I would like to see mandatory vaccinations for school-age children replaced by better public education and a confidence earned by the FDA. If parents still wanted to opt out and take their chances with herd immunity I would support that option.
