1:30am, and already a good day

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts’ university, or else he would be “called home.”Now, his son, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, says God is speaking again, telling him to deny lurid allegations in a lawsuit that threatens to engulf this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal.Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors’ expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter’s senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay. She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as “underage males.”

Tee-hee! I checked in specifically to see if this was posted. So how many is that now? Is there enough to finally send that corrupt Evengelical deck of cards into production?

Ahh… exposing corrupt, hypocritical religionists is what the weekends are all about. Remind me to fill that out on my Classmates questionnaire.

  2. pha says:

I love that. God told me to deny lurid allegations. Priceless.

    This is no surprise….

and is the usual example for a large, out of fucking control, bullshit club….

Why but for the only reason to be just classified as a religion, do they deserve tax exemption….BULLSHIT….shit I want my own damn club…we can meet once a week and shoot pool, shoot the shit and drink some holy water…im mean worship….

I get more and more aggravated with how our legislators are defining our lives with their faith based horseshit laws…and I get exempt – tionally excited when the laws have something to do with tax distribution…..

it may just be time to resurrect the greek gods….of course accounts will be specially hand pick and or modified to the club membership likings….

i can hear those church bells now “in heaven thier is no beer, la la la la la la…..”

Schadenfreude isn’t a very fulfilling emotion.

Why is it good news when Christians act badly?

  5. cry4turtles says:

It’s not good news Apple, but an exposition of hypocrisy.

  6. alexatheist says:

I disagree, Schadenfreude is the most deliciously satisfying substance in the universe second only to revenge. Come on, AC, embrace your darker human nature.

Why is it good news when Christians act badly?

Becasue it exposes them for what they really are: world class charlatans and hypocrites. The more scandal the less people who respect religion and religious figures.

  7. charlie says:

    Apple,

I certainly have no pleasure learning of any human mind in struggle…witnessing the fade of dumb controlling ideas however are very fun….

and why is Christmas a unconstitutional national holiday…

  8. Barbiebrains says:

    Oh you silly atheists…

Now I get to play the Christian troll for just this once…

    1. Oral Roberts is not a true Christian and therefore is easily dismissed. He is false prophet and part of the “prosperity Gospel” movement. Oral Roberts certainly does not represent “orthodox” Christianity.
    2. Christians are not perfect, just forgiven. Jesus died for our sins so we are home free.
    3. Read your Scripture. Jesus says that there will be false prophets in the end times: “beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1Jn 4:1

And Roberts claims he was visited by a 900 ft Jesus which is creepier than those late ’70’s Godzilla and Ultraman Japanese TV shows….

Oral Roberts Vision Of The 900 Foot Jesus

Many Bible believing Christians have been skeptical about the visions Roberts claims to receive when he needs money and the fact that he says God talks directly to him. Orthodox Christians maintain that God speaks to man today only through His Word, Holy Scripture.

“The partner letter which triggered the most resounding outburst of public ridicule and criticism [to that time] was a September 1980 description of Oral’s vision of a 900-foot-tall Jesus. Roberts reported that late on the afternoon of May 25, he stood looking at the unfinished skeleton of the City of Faith, distraught over his financial difficulties, when `suddenly an unusual feeling swept over me’:

“`I felt an overwhelming holy presence all around me. When I opened my eyes, there He stood … some 900 feet tall, looking at me … He stood a full 300 feet taller than the 600-foot-tall City of Faith. There I was face to face with Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. I have only seen Jesus once before, but here I was face to face with the King of kings. He reached down, put his Hands under the City of Faith, lifted it, and said to me, “See how easy it is for Me to lift it!”‘”

“Oral recalled that his eyes filled with tears, and Jesus assured him that He would speak to the ministry’s partners and that the City of Faith would be finished.” (p. 415)

    LOL, LOL, LOL…

I believe that is a variation on the “No True Scotsman” falacy.

    Alex:

Like all mortals, I am prone to bouts of Schadenfreude from time to time. Particularly as Alex Rodriguez continues to go hitless in the playoffs, and with the Yankees on the verge of another post-season exit. I love it.

  11. TIME says:

Used to be that when someone claimed to be literally speaking to God; the guys in the white coats would come and take them away.

Claiming to be speaking with God, is a sure way to become popular and rich.

I’ve thought about it, but I doubt I could keep up the con. These guys keep it going for decades and succeeding generations.

I still (rarely) catch Benny Hin “heal” people. It’s the best humor on Sunday TV.

  12. VegeBrain says:

What’s disgusting to me is that John Hagee claims he’s doing a “full and thorough investigation.” Yeah, right. One of the prime exponents of Christian reconstructionism is actually going to something like this?

The fox is guarding the chicken coop.

  13. jshanewhit says:

Richard Robert’s wife is having cyber sex with young boys, this is priceless. Just what the family wanted announced publicly and investigated. They remodeled the mansion yearly. It just boggles the mind that people will still give them money. And they will.

For me it is hard to imagine a life that lavish, and selfish could be supported with the religion con.

  14. what says:

    Weeeee! The article further stated:

Cornell Cross II, a senior from Burlington, Vt., said he is looking to transfer to another school because the scandal has “severely devalued and hurt the reputation of my degree.”

Now come on there Cornell. Is that actually possible?

    - Mrs. Roberts – who is a member of the board of regents and is referred to as ORU’s “first lady” on the university’s Web site – frequently had cell-phone bills of more than $800 per month, with hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to “underage males who had been provided phones at university expense.”

She’ married to Richard but I’ll bet you she likes oral.

  15. reason says:

if only they had cellphones when i was underage.
