Just thought I would post a definition of religion that wandered into a conversation I had the other day. I find it fully covers all religion, even those without gods.

“Religion is that which regulates superstition.”

Evangelican xians should be deported for inflicting the criminal BushCo upon us. Discuss.

  4. what says:

Sorry schnivelbiv. I really don’t know what that means. The word regulates is to nebulus in this context.

I’m working nights so I seldom know what day it is, but one day this week Hitchens v Sharpton was on Hardball. I missed it and thought I’d hear about it here. I haven’t heard a word. Anybody see it and how was it?

I have read Dawkin’s The God Delusion…can anyone recommend another good read like that one? I need to learn more about the evolution/creationism debate and how to counter fundamentalist arguments since I am not as well versed as many of you (reading Phreedm’s posts helps…there are a lot of Phreedies out here where I teach, LOL)…Thanks from a public schoolteacher!!!

GodlessInND, I too am godless in ND. My husband is, too. So, that’s three of us. Yay!

Barbie, my husband said that “Natural Atheism” by David Eller is a really good one. I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Also recommended, “Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person’s Answer to Christian Fundamentalism.”
    Hope that helps.

MOVIES. Saw Sicko last night. I really liked it and would recommend it to everyone! It certainly highlights a serious problem we have with the Health Care Industry. And while some of it was heartbreaking to watch, there was much levity to take the edge off. I found it informative while being entertaining, I hope everyone sees it.

However, I got really pissed off while waiting for the movie Surf’s Up to start. (Really liked Surf’s Up by-the-by, fun film.) Anyway, There was a preview for a movie called Noah. Yup! God, who this time is being played by Morgan Freeman, who I always liked as an actor, so I’m a bit disappointed that he’s in this. So God chooses a presidential or congressional candidate or something, to be his “Noah”, and tells this guy to build an arc big enough to house two of every animal because God’s going to kill everyone by drowing them!

Coincidently, just recently I watched the BBCs brilliant series Planet Earth. Now this Noah movie is just one big site gag after another, and obviously not meant to be taken seriously in any way. However, the fact that a sociopathic serial killer named God is going to randomly choose two out of each species and kill all else, doesn’t seem like a family friendly movie! Although how killing off the sealife works, I’m not sure. Will the water that falls be all fresh and no salt? Or vice versa, or a mix? And how does every species from the arid desert to the tropic jungles get to Noah’s house in the US? Cos in the Exploring the Cave section in the Planet Earth documentary, it showed these massive deep caves where an entire ecosystem of insects and animals liveout there entire lives in these caves. They’ve evolved over time, adapting to their harsh environment (like all species). But a big fuck off flood doesn’t give anything time to do anything!

How they can make a movie about this noah’s arc myth, which makes no sense and doesn’t even work as a farce! Plus it has this sociopathic serial killer and it’s marketed to kids! Why not just make the guy God chose as “Noah” Hannibal Lecter!?! Wouldn’t one psychopathic killer feel at home with another? You gotta be kidding me with this film!! We’re trying to stop genocide in the world, and this movie is advocating for it! Wiping out everyone except two rich white catholic folks and maybe some of their neighboors! See? I Told you it pissed me off!

Diane – The movie is called “Evan Almighty” and is a follow-up to “Bruce Almighty”. Perhaps you should see the film before you jump to so many conclusions about its content, as you’ve clearly only seen the trailor.

    It’s.

I saw “Evan Almighty” and must report that it was a miraculous movie actually. It made Steve Carell not funny.

    Diane,
Social1sed medicine is not the great solution that Michael Moore’s “Sicko” tricks you into believeing. My auntie back home in Wales has been on an NHS waiting list for gall bladder surgery for six years now whereas if she lived in the USA she wouldn’t have had to wait more than a few days. Moore is an idiot and publicity whore who has no idea what it is like to receive mediocre healthcare at a physician of the governments choosing after a lengthy wait. As someone who has health issues which require frequent visits to the doctor and hospital I would fight social1sed medicine over here with my dying breath. The NHS is an absolute failure in the UK. America’s medicine is the most advanced in the world and I will not comprimise my own health so that some welfare whore with five kids or poor Mexican immigrants can have guaranteed coverage. It’s not my fault if a person makes bad decisions in life and ends up having to work at McDonalds to support themselves and can’t afford insurance.

Neither is the for profit only “health care” industry that we have now!

Nice to know you think people with serious mental illness, cancer, children born with debilitating life-long illness, the elderly who find themselves with medical problems, etc.. just “made bad decisions in life” and fuck em if they “can’t afford insurance”.

And I guess you better hope that suddenly the medical treatment you get so frequently isn’t dropped because this time it’s YOU who they’ve decided to drop coverage on so they can continue to maximize profits for their shareholders.

Oh, and thanx to all for sharing bout the Noah film. I didn’t know it was a sequal or spoof on another film, all I had to go on was the preview. Good to know “It’s A Movie”, cos at first I was a bit scared at the big giant people who suddenly appeared on the wall when the lights went out! So I’ll try to keep that in mind next time. Thanx for sharing.

    Diane and Alex:

I honestly don’t know enough about the health care issue to say whether the American system or socialized systems are better in the end for the patient, but I do find it depressing that health care in this country is beholden to mega-corporations and HMO’s who are just trying to make a buck. I run libertarian on a lot of issues… but there are some things that are too important to be left strictly up to the free market, and in a just society, health care is one of those things.

That said, I think it is probably best to be utilitarian on this issue too. Whichever system provides the greatest good for the greatest number of people should prevail, even if strict equality isn’t achieved.

I haven’t seen Sicko, and I don’t plan to. I thought Fahrenheit 911 was so incredibly manipulative and dishonest… and I am about as far from a Bush backer as you can get. I don’t trust Michael Moore at all and it worries me that people actually take him seriously.

  18. what says:

American health care is ranked 37th in the world. I’m getting really tired of people telling me it’s the best in the world. It’s the best only IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT. Health care costs are out of control in this country and the primary reason is the for-profit insurance middleman which serves as a anticapitalistic buffer between service provide and recipient. If there ever was a system designed to be soo redundant and yet so unrobust I have yet to see it.

I think Americans better wake up and take a look at what they are doing to themselves. More and more of our freedom is being usurped by corporate entities as Americans are forced to work more for less. This has immediate consequences to our health. Americans have little time to get the exercise they need a little people-friendly space in which to exercise. Americans keep getting fatter and fatter. Because of Type II Diabetes Americans are projected to pass on to their children for the first time in our history a shorter life-span. We are f’ing our living-space and f’ing what we live for all the while giving away our influence to make things better to corporations.

Wake the f up America. Your being raped!

Here’s a nice medium: How about universal health care with the option to get private health insurance? That way everyone gets covered regardless and those with the money to afford it can get private health insurance.

Yeah, they scare me too. I always start charging toward them with a chair and end up getting kicked out of the theater. I have to rent all my movies now, but I keep breaking my t.v. to free all the poor midgets that get stuck in there. I just can’t figure out how they get in there though.

I don’t know if any of you have ever even played the game Postal or Postal 2, but the movie is coming out soon. I was skeptical at first, but after seeing the trailer I definitely want to see the movie. Here’s the trailer and the reasons why Uwe Boll (the director) thinks we should see it. The guy brings up a lot of good points (and seems to be an atheist).

Alex, be careful my friend. You are a liability to your insurance company-not an asset. You can become a hot potatoe at any moment.

Personally, I think health insurance isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. I think we should all quit working and go on welfare…and live the good life!
