Here in the US, we'd have to build the mental hospitals inside-out. The majority of the adult population still believes in invisible friends.
I wonder what their definition of mentally fit and mentally ill is and who would qualify into those categories. I have a feeling that their "mentally unfit" might include any mental/emotional disorder, whether mild or severe. I'm totally against this. It is discrimination. What right do they have to tell people who can and who cannot vote? I see this turning into something ugly that would just further stigmatize those that have mental disorders.

Reading over the article, it is obvious that this is coming from people with a severe prejudice toward those with mental disorders.

So 3 people get to vote nationwide. Wow!

Maybe just landowning men should be allowed to vote. Worked for the Greeks.

I wonder if they will let me vote? Doubtfully. I voted for a republican once.
I'm interested in others' thoughts about universal suffrage. Subscribing to the principle that all members of a society should have an equal say in the election of their government, I find myself championing the plight of the disenfranchised including prisoners, the mentally retarded and children.

I think this is not an easy topic to discuss, but I especially feel that prisoners should be allowed to vote. my reasoning behind this is that the prison population should be small enough to make little impact on social policy; if the population becomes excessively large then perhaps social policy should change to decriminalized certain activities that put an excessive number of people in prison. If prisoners cannot vote then tis is unlikely to happen.

(I'm assuming that prisoners currently cannot vote)

Children, I am somewhat less sure of.
I dont know the law for prisoners either. I'd like to see victimless crime decriminalized. If someone takes someones right to vote, they aught to have theirs taken also.(I'm also going to ignore any abortion debates that spring from this). My main concern was the criminalization of the "Mentally unfit". A potentally huge devestating grey area.

Right on HeatheNZ.

ALL adults subject to a law, should be able to vote on it.

I might make an exception for those guilty of election fraud, but otherwise it should be no more complicated than that.

Why aren't we ENCOURAGING convicted felons to vote and participate in a civilized process!! Isn't that just what we'd like them to learn to do?

I think it is far too easy to vote in this country and I would like to see some sort of minimal required qualifications such as a high school diploma or equivalent and/or a minimal IQ score of 100. These are rather low standards but would eliminate a lot of votes from people who are not informed about the issues or candidates. Do we really want every idiot having a say in national policy?
