Fox and CBS – NO to condom ads

The New York Times reports today that FOX and CBS are refusing to air a condom commercial. The reason? FOX writes ?Contraceptive advertising must stress health-related uses rather than the prevention of pregnancy.? Meanwhile, CBS defends its decision simply by stating it ?did not find it appropriate? for its network. What an outrage! Planned Parenthood has advocated for programs that prevent sexually transmitted infections AND unintended pregnancies for years, most recently through our Prevention First! Campaign – and we’ve faced extremist opposition to these commonsense measures every step of the way. This latest move by CBS and FOX is yet another example of how narrow-minded, biased thinking can prevent a well-intentioned, prevention-focused message from reaching millions of viewers.

Folx, I’m not one to post stuff from Planned Parenthood on the blog, but you ALL KNOW that condom use IS a church/state separation issue. While the networks are not state owned (and can therefore do whatever they want), it’s important to understand where their heads are. Up their asses.

I often find myself wondering what the world would be like if many people did not believe some fairy tale about an old man in the sky.

Yeah, well…personally, I’d be extremely happy if I never had to see another commercial for “male enhancement” products, feminine hygiene supplies, diarrhea remedies, acid reflux medication, and absolutely yes, condoms as well!! Sheesh!!!

I guess I’m showing my age, but whatever happened to decorum and good taste on the public airwaves?

    Welcome, mattmann!

As far as I am aware, there is no way for us to edit our comments on this blog – with the exception of a couple of chosen ones to whom Dave has given the Power :)

    Up their asses.

You even need condoms for that!

  6. what says:

Alas, if only Phreedies father had condomsense.

CBS and FOX are to busy covering their selling-the-Iraq-invasion tracks to be bothered with much else.

    Unbelievable.

What’s irritating is the same people bitching about abortions are the ones who go out of their way to keep birth control information from easy public access.

If they really wanted to reduce abortions and STDs, they would be handing out condoms and advertising on every channel how to use them.

Fox says condom ads are “not appropriate” if used in the context of contraception. In this day and age of too many people fighting for too few resources that is irresponsible, IMO.

You’re right on, Dave. This is a statement to mollycoddle the religious. As if there was any question who their audience is.

  8. what says:

FAUX News is in the same nose dive as BushCo and the repuglican party. And just like those pillars of integrity FAUX News panders to its ever-shriveling base of the religiously delusional when the going gets rough.

Of course you do…one only needs to do a simple search to see how many times you’ve posted in support of PP…

but you ALL KNOW that condom use IS a church/state separation issue.

This is amazing…what an intellectual leap…the first use of condoms is recorded in ancient Egypt…

It had nothing to do with the “myth”, but everything to do with the prevention of syphilis…

Wow Dave…I’ve seen you stretch before in an attempt to prove your “myth” to the troops…but this one tops them all…

I can not see how anyone can be against using condoms and giving the condom movement support right now. Condoms can only do good there is no down side to using them unless your trying to get pregnet !!! LOL

Actually I do understand why they do this: they want to enforce their belief that the only time people have sex is when they’re married and want to have a baby. Any other “use” for sex is wrong to them.

I can’t understand how Fox has shows like the Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad and then won’t air this stuff. If it wasn’t for those few shows I’d never watch FOX, except and occasional football game. But this stuff is why I go out on Saturday mornings and counter protest the fundies at the local planned parenthood.

I saw the Trojan ad and it portrays a bar with pigs on stools trying to get phone numbers from passing women. This is just another example of the double standard which says that male bashing is ok but females are off limits. Could you imagine if there was an ad that portrayed women literally as shrews?

  14. Apple_Christmas says:

Speaking of male bashing in commercials… Have you ever noticed that whenever a husband and wife are portrayed in a commercial, the husband is a complete buffoon, while the wife is smart and savvy? It seems like that’s the case 90% of the time. It irritates the hell out of me.

  15. alexatheist says:

    AC,
Yes I notice it and it drives me crazy. Male bashing is fine but females must be treated as being beyond fault. Thank the feminists for this double standard.

It’s a weird world where ads for a piece of latex are off limits but showing gratuitous violence and disrespectful behaviour by children towards their parents is the norm. Which behaviour do you want your kids to exhibit, sexual responsibility or a tendancy towards violence?

BTW, I an not an advocate of zero population growth, I’m for a negative population growth. Almost all of our social and environmental problems can be traced to overpopulation. No thanks to the catholic church.
