Rally for reason: BE THERE

The RALLY FOR REASONhttp://www.rallyforreason.com Media: Edwin Kagin859-384-7000 or edwin@edwinkagin.com COALITION SUPPORTING GOOD SCIENCE, SOUND TEACHINGTO SPEAK OUT AT OPENING OF CREATIONIST MUSEUMSun-Mon. May 27-28, 2007 A broad coalition of secularist, religious, and educational groups and other advocates of “good science” will be protesting this Memorial Day weekend at the opening of a Creationist Museum in Kentucky. The Answer in Genesis Creationist Museum is a 60,000-square-foot facility that will feature state of the art exhibits and other presentations arguing on behalf of an Old Testament view of how human beings and the universe came into existence. It is meant as a statement against Darwinian evolution, and scientific findings that the cosmos is billions of years old, and that human beings evolved, along with other present-day creatures, from earlier life forms. Instead, “young Earth” creationist groups like AIG preach that the Earth is only about 6,000 years old. The museum will reportedly have exhibits reflecting the dubious claim that dinosaurs and human beings co-existed, contrary to scientific evidence. The RALLY FOR REASON includes groups and individuals who support objective science and high standards for science instruction in public schools. It includes religious and non-religious groups ranging from the Clergy Letter Project to the Institute for Humanist Studies and American Atheists. Edwin Kagin, organizer of the Rally stated that the protest does not challenge the right of AIG to present its views. “They can teach that things fall up if they wish,” said Mr. Kagin. “We’re simply trying to show that their views are based on a particular and narrow religious doctrine, not on good scientific evidence.” The RALLY FOR REASON will take place on Monday, May 28 2007 beginning at 9:00 AM in front of the Creation Museum, Petersburg Rd., Boone County, KY. More information can be found at http://www.rallyforreason.com. There will be a RALLY FOR REASON SPEAK-OUT hosted by the Free Inquiry Group of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky on Sunday, May 27, 200 at the Hilton Cincinnati Airport Hotel, 7373 Turfway Rd., Florence, KY beginning at 7:00 PM. Speakers will include Rev. Mendle Adams; Frank Zindler (biologist, geologist); Dr. Gene Kritsky (evolutionary biologist); Helen Kagin, physician and others. It should be a crime for parents to teach their childred to be stupid. This is absolute brainwashing. Fortunately their numbers are falling rapidly. Give it another generation and the numbers will be next to nil.

    Hmmm…sounds like something Nero said…

said Ellen Johnson, President of American Atheists. “The scientific enterprise must be kept free from meddling by religious or other groups. Good science is a foundation for any enlightened civilization, and we want to support that as a cultural and political value.”

    Wow…what an arrogant, racist comment…

Ellen should really study the writings from the Father’s of Modern science…

    “Please don’t feed the trolls”

will be my sign at the site of the absurdity….

    Just say no to religion

  5. avatar evilatheistconquerer says:

Um, how the hell is it arrogant or racist?

  6. avatar imaskeptic says:

phreedm is a plant here, right? to stir up the already boiling pot…really is he/she a ringer? i’m sure i heard ringing just now in my right ear…tolerable as long as it doesn’t throw off my balance, but annoying enough to effect a trip to the druggist, as i am out of antiemetics.

  7. avatar CAB4reason says:

Yes, yes, starve the Troll! Maybe he’ll go like one of those Gigapets… roll over on it’s back, x’s over it’s eyes as it dies from starvation.

  8. avatar what says:

Phreedy you worm. I am a scientist. Who the hell are the “Father’s of Modern science”? Please educate me oh blight-brained one.

  9. avatar what says:

    CAB4reason

    “starve the troll”

From what I can tell Phreedy le Phreak has been commenting here for years and will not be leaving soon – unless he finds a job or gets an education or otherwise gets a life.
So my recommendation is to simply ridicule Le Phreek rather than shun him. Although I do enjoy a good shun now and then.

I wish I could be at the rally. I will just have to imagine myself there dressed in a Flinstones costume and carrying a sign saying “Have a yabba dabba doo time, a dabba doo time, you’ll have a gay old time”

  11. avatar rainbows4dinosaurs says:

Yeah, I wish I could be there too – been hankerin’ for a nice, big, juicy brontosaurus burger.

Oh wait. I guess in this case it would be a behemoth burger, wouldn’t it phreedm?

    He-he, that’s funny, What. I like it!

I wish I could be there, unfortunately, I have things to do this weekend.

I live in Northern Kentucky myself, only about 10 miles or so from this uber-insult called the ?Creationism Museum?, and I live in the town that many of them are booking hotels in. I might pay the protest a visit myself, despite I might not be able to stay long or have anything to aid in protest. But just being there, even for 20 minutes, would be worthwhile to me since this appals me very badly.

This is against modern knowledge, actual history and what historians know and believe, against science and reason, and education. This is also a sign of terrible things to come, such as I feel that it shows potential for a Christian-based fascism (which is a problem, rather you are Christian or not)?

  15. avatar reason says:

if it is a creationism museum
does it shows the sons of god fornicating with the daughters of men to produce giants like the bible says.

  16. avatar what says:

    Reason

I am not an avid Buybull reader. How big
were those giants? Is that Old Testiemint?

  17. avatar thegoodatheist says:

Here’s from an article i wrote on my website:

“..There has been a great deal of protest in the US over the opening of the museum, which has somewhat delayed the previous scheduled opening. Alas, the effort is both in vain and counter-productive; regardless of the protestations of scientist and secularists, creationists simply refuse to accept any theory that undermines their religious convictions. Strong opposition only enforces the idea that they are being unfairly prosecuted by intellectual ?fascism?. The museum is not the cause of scientific ignorance in America; rather it is a symptom of it. Attempting to shut it down is tantamount to putting a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound.

s creationists further remove themselves from the inconvenience of reality, they will continue to build whatever institutions they can to house their antiquated beliefs. A museum is perhaps only the start for them. Their ambitions extend far further. But the intellectual havoc they create is not impossible to combat, nor is it necessarily permanent. The will of the general American public has to push strongly for scientific education.. Sadly, the average citizen is interested less in the pursuit of truth and more in the pursuit of happiness, which the museum undoubtedly fulfills for some. The way to fight this museum will therefore come not from protest, or even boycott, but from a campaign on the part of secularists of equal and greater vigor to ensure that we do not become complacent and uncaring about the importance of science and reason, lest it become hijacked by those concerned less with the truth of the natural world, but rather by Bronze age myths.”

  18. avatar reason says:

    what
the old testament, goliath was a giant
and giants were supposed to be a race created by the sons of god having sex with the daughters of men.
also there is a good book called harlot by the road ,telling how rabbis and preachers haved tried to clean up all the sex talk in the bible.

  19. avatar karen says:

If you would like to sign a petition against the creationist museum’s false information dissemination, go to this site:

    http://www.defconamerica.org/

There are two separate petitions, one for educators, and one for regular citizens.

  20. avatar rna2dna says:

    karen,

Thanks! For the link to the petitions, I had to sign as regular, obviously :)

  21. avatar karen says:

I suggest you read this article on the *museum*.

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2007/05/28/EDGFKQ1SI91.DTL

    Here’s the final paragraph

That’s the key difference between the scientific and religious journeys toward truth. Fundamental religion is based on unquestioning faith, science is based on reason that is continually questioning. They are very different paths. Visitors to the Creation Museum must understand that it is not a science museum — it is a religious museum, whose re-imaginings of geological and biological evidence have no support from the scientific community.

    emphasis mine

  22. avatar mryder66 says:

    Karen,

You realize that the article you linked to is unacceptable to Phreedm. How could you fail to notice that it’s from San Francisco? This means that anything reported must be part of the radical homosexual agenda designed to undermine the moral fabric of society.

  23. avatar karen says:

    Sorry Remy

    I caved.
It just seemed like so many others weren’t heeding the “Don’t Feed” sign, I fell in with the group.
Back to my corner for self-flagellation -or something- again. :P

  24. avatar karen says:

    HZ
I know, the article is from the brazenly heathen San Fran area. But the Aussie one I read before that made fun of the US by ending the article with the fact that 3 republican candidates admitted they didn’t believe in evolution in one of the debates. :) I thought phreedm might be more disposed to this one even if it was San Franian. But without the info to compare, I guess he couldn’t know.

  25. avatar says:

Interesting article…but it appears to be nothing more the professional jealousy…

In February, Gregory Farrington took over as executive director of the California Academy of Sciences, and immediately took up the task of constructing an operating plan to go along with the museum’s new $392 million home being constructed in Golden Gate Park.

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=5&entry_id=16964

I think ole’ Gregory is wondering why a little museum in Kentucky is getting more attention then his pet project…thanks in part to AA…

    Here’s an interesting line though…

On the other hand, if new evidence were to come to light tomorrow that refuted current views of evolution and the notion of a 4.6 billion-year-old Earth, then the scientists at the California Academy of Sciences and other science-based institutions would be the first to modify their theory of creation. The story would change, not the facts.

Would you be so willing to modify your beliefs…?

There are many “facts” which question the concept of evolution and the creation of the universe…and point to a young earth…

It’s been my observation that non-believers simply ignore the question altogether…

  26. avatar karen says:

    phreedm
Sure, when evidence comes to light to refute my current beliefs, i will modify them.

  27. avatar remy says:

    Kaaaaaarrren,
Didn’t you ,your own self say something about not responding?

What most IDers don’t get is the fact (actually they don’t know what facts are)that any believer of Evolution will immediately change his or her mind if presented with credible evidence. It’s called critical thinking, a foreign concept to theists.
