Yes.

I swear I am doomed to have inane xian songs from my indoctrinated childhood through my head at regular intervals. Drives me nuts.

Of course my parents would say that it's god calling me home... [sigh]

That saying reminds me of November 22, 1963 (not that I was alive then, mind you). Aldous Huxley, John F. Kennedy, and C.S. Lewis all died that same day. Crazy world.

First, let me say my prayers are with your friend regarding his/her loss. Second, regarding your lamenting:
Desperate attempts to feel control where there is none.
what a cruel, indifferent thing that natural selection process did to our DNA?leaving us with this terrible spiritual void we so desperately need to fill. And for those who believe they can fill it all by ourselves? well, as Sponge Bob so blithely put it, ?well, good luck with that?
Why can't our intelligent brains rid ourselves of our grandparents' mythologies? Am I brainwashed, doomed forever to have this silliness in my head?
Could it be Augustine was right about that ?God-sized hole? in our hearts, after all?

I think you never fully get rid of all of the brainwashing. Some things I try so hard to get rid of, like the fear of vanity and pride. Yet I still hear my father's voice saying that the devil punishes people for their pride. Still not sure what the devil had to do with it, but eh, he was catholic and Hungarian. They have some pretty insane superstitions.

Oh, do shut up jcc, and please keep your nonsense to to yourself.

There are a times to attempt to make points and then there are times to keep your ineffectual prayers to yourself.
I am sorry for your loss. But, on the brighter side, my wife and I just had our first child...Stella Sophia.

She is beautiful.

Remember, there will always be death and there will always be life.

Carpe Diem!

Dave
I am so sorry about the loss of your friend's child. I agree that it must be the greatest loss. I hope I don't have to experience it firsthand to find out.

My youngest is 19 and I would be devastated to lose him. I'd feel the same about any of my kids, but he is closest in age to the child of your friends.

I've mentioned a couple times this year already about bad things coming in threes. So I guess that superstition is stuck in my head too. Not that I believe it, but the things we grow up with, old habits, die hard, especially the innocuous automatic reflex things we were taught. I think in a way it keeps us close to those we were close to who have died.

podry
Congratulations on the birth of baby Stella! I hope all goes well for you, her, and your wife! Your first child...what a landmark occasion! Will you be off over the summer break to spend more time with her, or do you have to work somewhere other than the school?

Good to see you quoting Sponge Bob.
Dave

Sorry for your friends loss. As a father of two I can actually imagine what they are going through right now. But I can only do so for a few moments. Even when only imagined the pain is unbearble.
