Thanks for the heads up Dave.

I have these as .avi files, and have watched them a couple of times. They are well worth the watching.

FYI, you still need to check with your local PBA affiliate to make sure it will air in your neck of the woods. I emailed mine and wonder-of-wonders they don?t plan to air it in Mississippi. Here?s the official response:

Jonathan Miller’s “A Brief History of Disbelief” is a three-part series
of one hour documentaries that has been offered to public television
stations by one of our ptv program distributors.

We have shown an interest in the series, but have made no current plans
    as of yet to broadcast.

Thank you for your interest in our programming.

Point of clarification: A Brief History of Disbelief itself isn’t airing on Bill Moyer’s Journal. A tie-in to the program ? an interview with Jonathan Miller and some clips from the program ? will air. It airs on PBS stations Friday, May 4th, 9 PM (check local listings).

Disbelief is airing nationwide on public TV, but it’s not being aired exclusively by PBS and is not being carried on a national feed. Basically, stations can run it whenever they want. Airdates as confirmed nationwide will be regularly posted at http://www.abriefhistoryofdisbelief.org.

I encourage everyone to please contact your local station(s) and tell them you’d like to see it (as Butch did in Miss.)! Mention the program is being offered by Executive Program Services.

    I love that…..

“The real question isn’t how people can disbelieve, but how faith can survive and still linger on.”

    Awesome….

  6. phreedm says:

It’s less an advocacy of atheism than a kind of post-atheism, a historical and philosophical review of this strange, dying idea of “religion” that reveals the progressive growth of atheistic thought.

    Hmmm…I’ve heard this somewhere before….ah yes…

All of these threads end up becoming one or all of the following:

    1. People bitching about some religious whackjob who comes here to spread their non sense.

    2. People trying to make fun of said whackjobs with very little wit or tactics.

Wow…imagine 3 hours of an old guy walking around a courtyard “talking” about religious whackjobs…

    Don’t forget the popcorn…YAWN…and the noDoz…zzzzzzz

Or, don’t knock it till you try it.

I’m going through Kevin Phillip’s “American Theocracy” at the moment and it seems a worthwhile venture and it is also a review of the history of religion in the US and its impact.

At the link at the beginning of this thread, in the comments section, there are several links to the program.

    This is one,

You can also find it on Youtube.

You can also see the complementary interviews in the Atheism Tapes.

HeatheNZ: I would be very interested in getting a hold of the .avi copies you have. Where did you download them from?? It seems that all the links above have the videos embedded. I would like to have them as stand-alone files so that I can convert them for viewing on my video iPod.

  12. mryder66 says:

    Idzeeboo,

I believe I downloaded them from either a P2p site or a bit torrent site. You could do a search of a site such as http://www.mininova.org.

If you are unable to find them you can send me an email to heathenz@gmail.com and I’ll burn them to a dvd for you (of course you’ll need to include an address too).

  13. mryder66 says:

    Spanders,

I read Kevin Phillip’s “American Theocracy” a while ago, and have it on my list of worthwhile reads.

  14. bernarda says:

idzeeboo, from the Veoh site you can download them in MP4. I don’t know if that works with ipod as I am one of the rare people who doesn’t have one.

For some reason, I can’t watch .avi videos because my system freezes when I launch one. I use Windows XP and have media player 11, so if anyone knows why this happens, I would be interested in knowing. Thanks.

    bernarda:
    Try RealPlayer.

  16. mryder66 says:

    bernarda,

You might like to download a program called k-lite. It comes with a bunch of codecs and it’s own player. I’ve yet to come across something that it fails to play (and pron comes in some weird formats :) )

    Oh – did I mention it’s free?

  17. bernarda says:

Thanks, Kristalline and HeatheNZ. I will try these things.

Great Video! I am seriously impressed with the information provided in this full 3 hrs of history. I will be looking up further info for a while. I found it at Veoh.com. It is in 3, one hour segments. It will even allow you to download segments to your computer. A very impressive production. Tons of real information, some thoughts, and presented very well. I wish american tv had this kind of programing. The BBC does not seem to think it’s viewers are total morons. Thanks for telling us it was out there.

Is the Jonathon Miller video available either to copy or for purchase anywhere? I can’t find it listed at all.

The Bill Moyers transcript is available here:

    And some information here:

You could also call PBS. There is a number listed on the ShopPBS page at the pbs.org site.

I would also like to suggest that you contact the BBC to find out if they have or would put it on DVD.

I hope that is helpful. If you do call the BBC please post a comment about it.
