Hmm, is there something wrong with that?

9 AM eastern? OY. St. Mattress of the Springs has a firm policy of worship till 10 AM -at least- on Sundays, but I’ll see what I can do. Perhaps I can get a special dispensation from the Holy Comforter.

Next time a believer asks me where I worship … St. Mattress of the Springs.

    Thank you!

Isn’t there some way we can find out about Ellen’s appearances sooner? I would love to watch this show but it is now 9:20 AM, so I’ll probably miss this.

I can’t figure out why rational folks are willing to appear on Fox. Doesn’t that endorse the idea that Fox is somehow a real news channel?

Lucky me — I did get to see & hear Ellen hold her own against the other guest (proponent for the free prayer & pizza program) and the two anchors who kept jumping in to interrupt her remarks.
I thought she did well despite the venue. Way to go Ellen!

    What
You’re welcome, but I actually got that one a few years back from a catholic friend!

Saw Ellen on the show. The hosts talked over her once again, or tried to, She was a bit more forceful this time. But they didn’t spend very much time on the piece at all.
Ellen’s beef was that in a news article, it had been reported that a local church was providing drinks and pizza at lunchtime for HS students who had off-campus lunch, but there was a prayer before the students could have the pizza.
Of course, the representative of the church denied that the prayer was officialy part of the deal and said “some” kids just came, got their pizza and left.
Apparently, the program is being discontinued though.

The hosts took issue with Ellen when she compared the scheme to someone luring kids into their basement with candy. It all ended quickly after that.

My high school had crap like that too. I also remember people going just for the free pizza. I remember one time they advertised free Subway in the gym and it ended up being some guy trying to save us all. My school was really bad about stuff like that, but I didn’t realize it until long after I was out. I guess I just counted it as normal and never thought they were doing something wrong.

I remember being uncomfortable sometimes. One time I was walking in the school and several students were “blessing” the lockers. It was really weird. For some reason they’re behavior made me want to leave. I remember feeling like I was in danger and not knowing exactly why. Maybe it was because they seemed to cult like.

  9. FlyingWeasel says:

the guy in the gym handing out subway sandwiches for conversions sounds kinda iffy, the school ought not to allow that kind of thing.

that being said, at my high school juniors and seniors were allowed to eat lunch off campus. I beleive that students (as a privledge, not a right) ought to be able to eat lunch anywhere they please, as long as the SCHOOL isn’t suggesting that they go pray for pizza.

My graduating class was the last class that was allowed to eat off campus. Apparently some of my graduating class caused so much trouble that they kept all students on campus for all lunch hours the following years.

I do remember seeing a bunch of posters for an after school bible study in the study hall, but religion wasn’t really shoved down my throat by anyone. In protest, I wore my Slayer and Cannibal Corpse shirts as much as possible, and I was probably the only student that didn’t either get sent home for it or had to turn my shirt inside out. Probably due to my being in the PTS board and having good grades. Being in the Army probably helped too (joined at 17 between junior and senior year).

Since my TV is now totally shut off (I suspended service since my son, who just turned 18!!!, is staying with his mom for a few months, and he’s the only one here who watches TV), I missed Ellen’s appearance. I went to the AA website to see if there was an excerpt, but there isn’t.

So not having the facts, all I can say on this topic is that IF the school has a closed-campus lunch policy, then letting students off campus for lunch to attend a known sectarian religious event disguised as “free pizza” is discriminatory against those students who choose not to go because they don’t want to be subjected to sectarian proselytizing.

So, Jacob23, IF that’s the case, then THAT’S what’s wrong with it: DISCRIMINATION!

  13. reason says:

if you want your child to be exposed to religion at school send them to a religious school keep the public schools secular. how long due we have to put up with these attempts to recruit kids.

  14. evilatheistconquerer says:

At the public high school I went to, my P.E. class once had a party and they made us pray before eating the food. That was bullshit.
At the private high school I went to there was this one christian counselor guy that used to come to the school and talk to some of the kids, get them to go on a youth ski trip. He knew my boyfriend and I were atheists and he never pushed religion on us though. He even brought us sodas and didn’t make us pray before getting them. He was just nice.

  15. reason says:

EAC and otherwords you are hot and he forgot about the religious stuff.

  16. evilatheistconquerer says:

    reason,
Shh! I don’t want it getting out or the religious right will know my secret to taking over the world. ;)
